pH-dependent selective ion exchange based on (ethylenediamintetraacetic acid-nickel)-layered double hydroxide to catalyze the polymerization of aniline for detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+

Progress in pre-treatment and extraction of organic and inorganic pollutants by layered double hydroxide for trace-level analysis

Continuous release of pollutants into the environment poses serious threats to environmental sustainability and human health. For trace-level analysis of pollutants, layered double hydroxide (LDH) is an attractive option to impart enhanced sorption capability and sensitivity toward pollutants because of its unique layered structure, tunable interior architecture, high anion-exchange capacities, and high porosity (e.g., Zn/Cr LDH/DABCO-IL, Ni/Al LDH, CS-Ni/Fe LDH, SDS-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Mg-Al LDH, Boeh/Mg/Al LDH/pC, and Fe@NiAl LDH). In concert with the well-defined analytical methodologies (e.g., HPLC and GC), the LDH materials can be employed to detect trace-level targets (e.g., as low as ∼ 20 fg/L for phenols) in aqueous environments. This review highlights LDH as a promising material for pre-treatment of a variety of organic and inorganic target pollutants in complex real matrices. Challenges and future requirements for research into LDH-based analytical methods are also discussed.

Potentiodynamic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy of Polyaniline-Modified Pencil Graphite Electrodes for Selective Detection of Biochemical Trace Elements

In this study, we analyzed the application of potentiodynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (PDEIS) for a selective in situ recognition of biological trace elements, i.e., Cr (III), Cu (II), and Fe (III). The electrochemical sensor was developed using the electropolymerization of aniline (Ani) on the surface of the homemade pencil graphite electrodes (PGE) using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The film was overoxidized to diminish the background current. A wide range of potential (V = −0.2 V to 1.0 V) was investigated to study the impedimetric and capacitive behaviour of the PAni/modified PGE. The impedance behaviors of the films were recorded at optimum potentials through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scrutinized by means of an appropriate equivalent circuit at different voltages and at their corresponding oxidative potentials. The values of the equivalent circuit were used to identify features (charge transfer-resistant and double layer capacitance) that can selectivity distinguish different trace elements with the concentration of 10 μM. The PDEIS spectra represented the highest electron transfer for Cu (II) and Cr (III) in a broad potential range between +0.1 and +0.4 V while the potential V = +0.2 V showed the lowest charge transfer resistance for Fe (III). The results of this paper showed the capability of PDEIS as a complementary tool for conventional CV and EIS measurement for metallic ion sensing.

Sensors Applied for the Detection of Pesticides and Heavy Metals in Freshwaters

Water is essential for every life living on the planet. However, we are facing a more serious situation such as water pollution since the industrial revolution. Fortunately, many efforts have been done to alleviate/restore water quality in freshwaters. Numerous sensors have been developed to monitor the dynamic change of water quality for ecological, early warning, and protection reasons. In the present review, we briefly introduced the pollution status of two major pollutants, i.e., pesticides and heavy metals, in freshwaters worldwide. Then, we collected data on the sensors applied to detect the two categories of pollutants in freshwaters. Special focuses were given on the sensitivity of sensors indicated by the limit of detection (LOD), sensor types, and applied waterbodies. Our results showed that most of the sensors can be applied for stream and river water. The average LOD was72.53±12.69 ng/ml (n=180) for all pesticides, which is significantly higher than that for heavy metals (65.36±47.51 ng/ml,n=117). However, the LODs of a considerable part of pesticides and heavy metal sensors were higher than the criterion maximum concentration for aquatic life or the maximum contaminant limit concentration for drinking water. For pesticide sensors, the average LODs did not differ among insecticides (63.83±17.42 ng/ml,n=87), herbicides (98.06±23.39 ng/ml,n=71), and fungicides (24.60±14.41 ng/ml,n=22). The LODs that differed among sensor types with biosensors had the highest sensitivity, while electrochemical optical and biooptical sensors showed the lowest sensitivity. The sensitivity of heavy metal sensors varied among heavy metals and sensor types. Most of the sensors were targeted on lead, cadmium, mercury, and copper using electrochemical methods. These results imply that future development of pesticides and heavy metal sensors should (1) enhance the sensitivity to meet the requirements for the protection of aquatic ecosystems and human health and (2) cover more diverse pesticides and heavy metals especially those toxic pollutants that are widely used and frequently been detected in freshwaters (e.g., glyphosate, fungicides, zinc, chromium, and arsenic).

Recent advances in the application of layered double hydroxides in analytical chemistry: A review

In recent years, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have garnered a lot of attention in analytical chemistry, due to their advantages such as relatively simple synthesis, low cost, possession of large specific surface area and high catalytic activity, and biocompatibility. The most common applications of LDH in analytical chemistry such as sorbents in sample extraction, electrode materials in electrochemical sensing and color indicators in colorimetric detection have been well reported. Generally, the LDHs are prepared as composites with nanomaterials, or constructed with specific three-dimensional structures, befitting the applications desired for them. However, the applications of LDHs (as extraction sorbents, color indicators and in electrochemical sensing) are usually limited in these scenarios. To help address these challenges, future trends and developmental prospects of LDHs materials in analytical chemistry are discussed in this article. Besides, the strategies associated with the design of LDHs, including the structural aspects, for potential analytical applications are presented and reviewed.
