Phototransformation of tetrabromobisphenol A bis (allyl ether) in an aqueous solution: Role of environmentally persistent free radicals

Tetrabromobisphenol A bis (allyl ether) (TBBPA-BAE) represents an extensively used brominated flame retardant (BFRs) in the production of many fields and their phototransformation in natural water is still unclear. The environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) with preserved activities could exist in the environment for a long time and involve in the phototransformation of many organic pollutants. Here, the photodegradation of TBBPA-BAE with the degradation rate constant (k= 0.060 h-1) under simulate sunlight and the promoting effect of EPFRs on TBBPA-BAE photodegradation (k = 0.135 h-1) were investigated. According to the detected photogenerated electrons (e-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) rather than hydroxyl radicals (•OH) by the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), the effect mechanism may not be related to the typical •OH induced by EPFRs. The possible transformation pathways of the ether cleavage, hydrolysis and hydroxylation of propenyl bond and the debromination were proposed by the primary byproducts identified by UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS. EPFRs caused a further debromination and ether cleavage and probably be due to EPFRs directly providing electrons to TBBPA-BAE which promoted the photodegradation of TBBPA-BAE, and their reaction mechanism needed further attention. Overall, this study provided useful information to understand the role of EPFRs on phototransformation of TBBPA-BAE in water.

The bioaccumulation and biotransformation of tetrabromobisphenol A bis (allyl ether) in common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Tetrabromobisphenol A bis (allyl ether) (TBBPA-BAE) is an extensively used brominated flame retardant, which has raised considerable concern because of its neurotoxic and endocrine disruption effects on aquatic organisms. However, previous studies mainly focused on the parent compound before modification, tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and little information is available about the bioconcentration and biotransformation of TBBPA derivatives in fish. In this study, we investigated the tissue-specific uptake, elimination kinetic, and biotransformation of TBBPA-BAE in common carp (Cyprinus carpio). The fish were exposed to TBBPA-BAE at environmentally relevant concentrations (20 μg·L-1) for 28 days, followed by 14 days of depuration. The results showed TBBPA-BAE could rapidly accumulate in common carp. Among the seven tissues studied, the highest concentrations of TBBPA-BAE were observed in the liver (6.00 μg·g-1 wet weight [ww]) on day 24, while the longest residence time was observed in the kidney (t1/2 values of 18.7 days). Biotransformation of TBBPA-BAE was documented in the in vivo experiments, and 14 different phase I and phase II metabolites were identified in the liver. These findings suggest the biotransformation products of TBBPA-BAE should be considered for a comprehensive risk evaluation.

Sensitive method for simultaneous determination of TBBPA and its ten derivatives

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its derivatives are regarded as new contaminants, raising much attention on their environmental occurrence and fates. However, the sensitive detection of TBBPA and its main derivatives is still a great challenge. This study investigated a sensitive method for simultaneous detection of TBBPA and its ten derivatives using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source. The method exhibited much better performance than previously reported methods. Furthermore, it was successfully applied in determining complicated environmental samples, including sewage sludge, river water and vegetable samples with concentration range from undetected (n.d.) to 25.8 ng g^-1 dry weight (dw). For sewage sludge, river water and vegetable samples, the spiking recoveries of TBBPA and its derivatives ranged from 69.6 ± 7.0% to 86.1 ± 12.9%, 69.5 ± 13.9% to 87.5 ± 6.6%, and 68.2 ± 5.6% to 80.2 ± 8.3%, respectively; the accuracy ranged from 94.9 ± 4.6% to 113 ± 5%, 91.9 ± 10.9% to 112 ± 7%, and 92.1 ± 5.1% to 106 ± 6%, and the method quantitative limits ranged from 0.00801 to 0.224 ng g^-1 dw, 0.0104-0.253 ng L^-1, and 0.00524-0.152 ng g^-1 dw, respectively. Moreover, the present manuscript describes for the first time the simultaneous detection of TBBPA and ten derivatives from various environmental samples, providing fundamental work for further research on their environmental occurrences, behaviors and fates.

Indirect competitive-structured electrochemical immunosensor for tetrabromobisphenol A sensing using CTAB-MnO2 nanosheet hybrid as a label for signal amplification

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is a kind of brominated flame retardant that is usually added to products to reduce their flame retardancy. However, its extensive use has resulted in their residues being found in the environment, which is very harmful. Herein, an indirect competitive immunosensor has been established for TBBPA detection based on the signal amplification system. Pd nanospheres in situ reduced on the surface of MnO₂ nanosheet hybrid (MnO₂/Pd) was used as the label for the secondary antibody through the Pd-N bond, and gold-toluidine blue composite was loaded onto MWCNTs (MWCNTs/Au-TB), which functioned as the platform for the immunosensor. The spherical structure of Pd had abundant catalytic active sites, which enhanced the catalytic activity of MnO₂/Pd as the label, hence amplifying the signal response. Besides, MWCNTs/Au-TB improved electron transfer and produced a strong signaling pathway for immobilizing antigens through the Au-NH₂ bond, which can specifically recognize primary antibodies to improve sensitivity. The immunosensor had a linear concentration range of 0-81 ng/mL, a low detection limit of 0.17 ng/mL (S/N = 3), with good stability, selectivity, and reproducibility based on the above advantages. Additionally, the acceptable accuracy and recoveries (recoveries, 92-124%; CV, 3.3-8.8%) in the real water sample analysis indicated that this strategy is promising for emerging pollutant analysis.
