Portuino-A Novel Portable Low-Cost Arduino-Based Photo- and Fluorimeter

A novel portable low-cost Arduino-controlled photo- and fluorimeter for on-site measurements has been developed. The device uses LEDs as a light source and a phototransistor as a light sensor. The circuit is based on the discharge of a capacitor with the photocurrent from the phototransistor. Validation experiments for absorbance measurements were performed by measuring protein concentration using the Bradford method and measuring phosphate ions in water using a commercial test kit. The emission light of the excited fluorescent dyes rhodamine 6G and calcofluor white was measured to validate the usability of the device as a fluorescence photometer. In all validation experiments, similar correlation coefficients and limit of detection could be achieved with the portable photo- and fluorimeter and a laboratory spectrometer and fluorimeter. Real sample analysis was performed, measuring phosphate concentration in freshwater and concentration of green fluorescent protein, extracted from Escherichia coli.

Recyclable macromolecular thermogels for Hg(II) detection and separation via sol-gel transition in complex aqueous environments

The sensitive detection and quantitative separation of toxic heavy metal ions in aqueous media are of great importance. In this study, a thermogelling poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL-PEG-PCL) triblock copolymer (P1) was synthesized, and difluoroboron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) fluorophore integrated with thiosemicarbazide units was attached to the chain ends of P1 through consecutive post-polymerization modifications, leading to P4. P4 exhibited rapid and selective detection of Hg(II) in 100% aqueous media via turn-on fluorescence emission with a limit of detection (LOD) of as low as 0.461 μM. This turn-on emission behavior is attributed to the suppression of C˭N isomerization caused by the formation of a coordination complex between P4 and Hg(II) ions. The selective and quantitative removal of Hg(II) among various metal ions was achieved by trapping chelated Hg(II) ions inside the dehydrated P4 gel via thermo-controlled sol-gel-dehydrated gel transitions. Treating the Hg(II) ion-trapped dehydrated gels with sodium sulfide (Na₂S) in acetone/water at room temperature led to HgS precipitates, and P4 in solution was dried and recycled. This recyclable thermoresponsive macromolecular probe is promising for not only Hg(II) detection but also its separation and removal from complex aqueous environments.

Highly selective sensor for the detection of Hg2+ ions using homocysteine functionalised quartz crystal microbalance with cross-linked pyridinedicarboxylic acid

This study reports an insightful portable vector network analyser (VNA)-based measurement technique for quick and selective detection of Hg2+ ions in nanomolar (nM) range using homocysteine (HCys)-functionalised quartz-crystal-microbalance (QCM) with cross-linked-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDCA). The excessive exposure to mercury can cause damage to many human organs, such as the brain, lungs, stomach, and kidneys, etc. Hence, the authors have proposed a portable experimental platform capable of achieving the detection in 20-30 min with a limit of detection (LOD) 0.1 ppb (0.498 nM) and a better dynamic range (0.498 nM-6.74 mM), which perfectly describes its excellent performance over other reported techniques. The detection time for various laboratory-based techniques is generally 12-24 h. The proposed method used the benefits of thin-film, nanoparticles (NPs), and QCM-based technology to overcome the limitation of NPs-based technique and have LOD of 0.1 ppb (0.1 μg/l) for selective Hg2+ ions detection which is many times less than the World Health Organization limit of 6 μg/l. The main advantage of the proposed QCM-based platform is its portability, excellent repeatability, millilitre sample volume requirement, and easy process flow, which makes it suitable as an early warning system for selective detection of mercury ions without any costly measuring instruments.
