A handling-free methodology for rapid determination of Cu species in seawater based on direct solid micro-samplers analysis by high-resolution continuum source graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

Miniaturized on-chip electromembrane extraction with QR code-based red-green-blue analysis using a customized Android application for copper determination in environmental and food samples

A miniaturized on-chip electromembrane extraction device with QR code-based red-green-blue analysis was designed to determine copper in water, food, and soil. The acceptor droplet consisted of ascorbic acid as the reducing agent and bathocuproine as the chromogenic reagent. The formation of a yellowish-orange complex was a sign of copper in the sample. Then, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the dried acceptor droplet was done by the customized Android app that was developed based on image analysis concepts. In this application, principal component analysis was performed on the data for the first time to reduce the three dimensions, red, green, and blue, to one dimension. The effective extraction parameters were optimized. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 0.1 µg mL^-1. Intra- and inter-assay relative standard deviations ranged between 2.0 and 2.3 % and 3.1-3.7 %, respectively. The calibration range was studied between 0.1 and 25 µg mL^-1 (R² = 0.9814).

β-Cyclodextrin/CMK-8-Based Electrochemical Sensor for Sensitive Detection of Cu2+

In this work, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/mesoporous carbon (CMK-8) nanocomposite was synthesized and used as an electrochemical sensing platform for highly sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+. The morphology and structure of β-CD/CMK-8 were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, the dates from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Cyclic voltammetry (CV) demonstrated that the β-CD/CMK-8 possessed a fast electronic transfer rate and large effective surface area. Besides this, the β-CD/CMK-8 composite displayed high enrichment ability toward Cu2+. As a result of these impressive features, the β-CD/CMK-8 modified electrode provided a wide linear response ranging from 0.1 ng·L−1 to 1.0 mg·L−1 with a low detection limit of 0.3 ng·L−1. Furthermore, the repeatability, reproducibility and selectivity of β-CD/CMK-8 towards Cu2+ were commendable. The sensor could be used to detect Cu2+ in real samples. All in all, this work proposes a simple and sensitive method for Cu2+ detection, which provides a reference for the subsequent detection of HMIs.

Spatial and environmental characteristics of colloidal trace Cu in the surface water of the Yellow River Estuary, China

Dynamic variations in chemical composition and size distribution of dissolved copper (Cu) along the river-sea interface in the Yellow River Estuary (China) were investigated. On average, ~64% and ~8% of bulk dissolved Cu (<0.45 μm) were partitioned in the <1 kDa fraction and 1-100 kDa, respectively. The other 28% were in the 100 kDa-0.45 μm colloids, which indicates that this fraction may dominate the overall morphology of colloidal Cu. The <3 kDa Cu fraction was susceptible to environmental parameters and the >3 kDa fraction was related to the behavior of dissolved organic carbon. 1-100 kDa Cu migrated more violently than >100 kDa Cu and tended to be a stable polymer, with stability increasing towards the sea. The source of <1 kDa Cu was complex and may be supplemented by the decomposition of small molecular colloids and the addition of the sediments or particles ligands.

Selective solvent bar micro-extraction as a single-step approach for the measurement of Cu fractions in seawater

Hollow fibre-supported liquid membrane was used for Cu fractionation in marine waters, using di-2-pyridylketone benzoylhydrazone (dPKBH) as a carrier due to its capacity to transport dissolved inorganic Cu at natural seawater pH. Optimized conditions were dPKBH (0.5 mmol L^-1), HNO₃ (0.5 mol L^-1) as acceptor agent, extraction time of 120 min and stirring speed of 800 rpm. Additionally, the selectivity of the method for the extraction of the inorganic Cu fraction was validated by comparing the experimental results with theoretical data, and a mathematical model was obtained for estimation of Cu linked to dissolved organic matter. The method was applied for the measurement of Cu fractions in real seawater samples. Results were successfully compared with the reference material BCR 403 and recovery analysis in waters from the Gulf of Cádiz, showing that it could be used as a simple approach for the study of different Cu fractions in marine waters.
