Ionic liquid-copolymerized monolith based porous layer open tubular column for CEC-MS analysis

Monomer-mediated growth of β-cyclodextrin-based microporous organic network as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography

CD-MONs (β-cyclodextrin-based microporous organic networks), derived from β-cyclodextrin, possess notable hydrophobic characteristics, a considerable specific surface area, and remarkable stability, rendering them highly advantageous in separation science. This research aimed to investigate the utility of CD-MONs in chromatography separation. Through a monomer-mediated technique, we fabricated an innovative CD-MON modified capillary column for application in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). The CD-MON-based stationary phase on the capillary's inner surface was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We assessed the performance of the CD-MON modified capillary column for separation purposes. The microstructure and pronounced hydrophobicity of CD-MON contributed to enhanced selectivity and resolution in separating diverse hydrophobic analytes, such as alkylbenzenes, halogenated benzenes, parabens, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The maximum column efficiency achieved was 1.5 × 105 N/m. Additionally, the CD-MON modified capillary column demonstrated notably high column capacity, with a methylbenzene mass loading capacity of up to 197.9 pmol, surpassing that of previously reported porous-material-based capillaries. Furthermore, this self-constructed column was effectively utilized for PAHs determination in actual environmental water samples, exhibiting spiked recoveries ranging from 93.2 to 107.9% in lake water samples. These findings underscore the potential of CD-MON as an effective stationary phase in separation science.

In-situ immobilization of covalent organic frameworks as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography

A new kind of covalent organic framework (COF) was first utilized as an stationary phase for open-tubular electrochromatography (OT-CEC) by in situ synthesis immobilized method at room temperature. On the basis of our previous work, 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triyl)trianiline (TZ) and 2,5-bis(2-propyn-1-yloxy)-1,4-benzenedicarboxaldehyde (BPTA) were employed as building blocks for the synthesis of COF TZ-BPTA. The coated capillary and COF TZ-BPTA were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were also applied to characterize COF TZ-BPTA and the modified column. In SEM, it can be seen that COF TZ-BPTA was the spherical shape and the modified capillary was covered with globular particles equably. The COF TZ-BPTA coated column exhibited good separation resolution and efficiency towards two antiepileptic drugs and other kinds of small organic molecules involving alkylbenzene, sulfonamides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), parabens, amino acids and herbicides. The maximum column efficiency was over 2.8 × 105 plates·m-1. In addition, the precisions (RSDs) of the retention times for the alkylbenzenes of intra-day runs (n = 3), inter-day runs (n = 3) and column-to-column runs (n = 3) were all less than 1.70% and separation performance was without obvious change within 100 times run. In addition, the real sample was tested on COF TZ-BPTA coated column. Hence, COF TZ-BPTA showed great potential in the separation domain.

Dynamic in situ growth of bonded-phase silica nanospheres on silica capillary inner walls for open-tubular liquid chromatography

Silica nanospheres (SNS) were grown on the inner walls of silica capillaries through a dynamic in situ nucleation process to prepare a highly porous and large accessible surface area substrate. The SNS were then functionalized with octadecyl (C18), 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and amino groups to develop robust and efficient chromatographic stationary phases. The modified silica capillaries were exploited for open-tubular liquid chromatography (OT-LC) and open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) applications. The prepared stationary phases were compared to conventional capillaries in terms of separation performance. The synthesis process was optimized, and the bonded-phase stationary phases were characterized by the electron microscopy technique. The effects of different solvents, additives, and functional groups on the geometry and chromatographic resolving power of the SNS were envisaged. The capillaries modified with octadecyl groups were evaluated for the separation of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, phenones, alkenylbenzenes, and enantiomers of chlorophenoxy herbicides. As an application instance, an SNS-C18-coated capillary was utilized for the separation of alkenylbenzenes from clove extract and protein digest medium, through OT-LC and OT-CEC techniques, respectively. The β-CD functionalized capillary was applied for the OT-CEC separation of a dichlorprop racemic mixture.

Fluorinated covalent-organic polymers as stationary phase for analysis of organic fluorides by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

Fluorinated porous materials, which can provide specific fluorine-fluorine interaction, hold great promise for fluoride analysis. Here, a novel fluorinated covalent-organic polymer was prepared by using 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorotelephtal aldehyde as the precursors and introduced as stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography. The as-synthesized fluorinated covalent-organic polymer and the modified capillary column were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Based on strong hydrophobic interaction and fluorine-fluorine interaction provided by fluorinated covalent-organic polymer coating layer, the modified column showed powerful separation selectivity toward hydrophobic compounds, organic fluorides, and fluorinated pesticides. Additionally, the fluorinated covalent-organic polymer with good porosity and regular shape was uniformly and tightly coated on the capillary inner wall. The obtained highest column efficiency could reach up to 1.2 × 105 plates⋅m-1 for fluorophenol. The loading capacity of the modified column can reach 141 pmol for trifluorotoluene. Besides, the relative standard deviations of retention times for intraday run (n = 5), interday run (n = 3), and between columns (n = 3) were all less than 2.55%. Significantly, this novel fluorinated material-based stationary phase shows great application potential in fluorides analysis.

In situ growth of imine-based covalent organic framework as stationary phase for high-efficiency electrochromatographic separation

Design of the smart stationary phases, which can improve the separation efficiency is an essential work in the capillary electrochromatography (CEC). Owing to good excellent properties, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have showed promising potential in the area of separation science. Here, a micro- and mesoporous COF TAPB-BTCA with adequate available interaction sites and outstanding mass transfer performance was first exploited as a stationary phase for high-efficiency in capillary electrochromatography. Through in situ growth approach, the COF TAPB-BTCA coated capillary column was facilely prepared at room temperature. The separation ability of the COF TAPB-BTCA coated capillary column was studied. The fabricated column showed high efficiency for the separation of six types of small molecular compounds, including alkylbenzenes, chlorobenzenes, phenols, parabens, vanillin and related phenolic compounds, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The maximum theoretical plates reached up to 293,363 N/m for phloroglucinol, showing significantly improved column efficiency in comparison to previous reported COFs-based columns. In addition, the mass loadability for methylbenzene was achieved to 1.44 mg/mL. Also, excellent reproducibility and stability were obtained on the COF TAPB-BTCA coated columns. The relative standard deviations of intra-day (n = 3), inter-day (n = 3) and three batch tubes were all less than 2%, and no obvious change was presented in separation performance after the column was used 120 runs. This COF TAPB-BTCA-based stationary phase would be a promising candidate for high-efficiency chromatographic separation.

Recent applications and chiral separation developments based on stationary phases in open tubular capillary electrochromatography (2019–2022)

Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) plays a significant role in chiral separation via the double separation principle, partition coefficient difference between the two phases, and electroosmotic flow-driven separation. Given the distinct properties of the inner wall stationary phase (SP), the separation ability of each SP differs from one another. Particularly, it provides large room for promising applications of open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). We divided the OT-CEC SPs developed over the past four years into six types: ionic liquids, nanoparticle materials, microporous materials, biomaterials, non-nanopolymers, and others, to mainly introduce their characteristics in chiral drug separation. There also added a few classic SPs that occurred within ten years as supplements to enrich the features of each SP. Additionally, we discuss their applications in metabolomics, food, cosmetics, environment, and biology as analytes in addition to chiral drugs. OT-CEC plays an increasingly significant role in chiral separation and may promote the development of capillary electrophoresis (CE) combined with other instruments in recent years, such as CE with mass spectrometry (CE/MS) and CE with ultraviolet light detector (CE/UV).

Direct coupling in-tube solid-phase microextraction with mass spectrometry using polymer coated open-tubular column for rapid analysis of antiepileptic drugs in biofluids

Development of high-throughput and rapid screening analytical method is in high demand for anti-doping and clinical point-of-care (POC) analysis. Solid-phase microextraction and mass spectrometry direct coupling (SPME-MS) has been proved as a rapid and effective way for target analysis in complex sample matrixes. An online direct coupling of in-tube SPME (IT-SPME) with MS using polymer coated open-tubular column has been developed in this work. A sharp stainless-steel needle was attached at the end of the SPME column, which enables the direct ionization of the analytes after elution from the IT-SPME column. Itaconic acid-benzene co-polymer was in-situ grown on the inner surface of the fused silica capillary and used as extraction phase. This column has low backpressure and provides both hydrophobic and weak cationic exchange interaction with the target analytes due to the chemical properties. The developed online IT-SPME-MS method showed good extraction performance towards various target analytes and good reusability at least for 60 times. As a proof-of-concept application, the above method was applied for the analysis of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in both plasma and urine samples with linear range (1 ng/mL-200 ng/mL), good linearity (R² ≥ 0.99), and good reproducibility (intra-day RSDs less than 4.36%, inter-day RSDs less than 6.55%). The method exhibited high enrichment factors between 187 and 204 for the two AEDs and high sensitivity for the analysis of human plasma samples and urine samples.

Open Tubular Capillary Electrochromatography-Mass Spectrometry for Analysis of Underivatized Amino Acid Enantiomers with a Porous Layer-Gold Nanoparticle-Modified Chiral Column

By developing a novel chiral column, we integrate open tubular capillary electrochromatography into sheathless mass spectrometry (MS) for efficient analysis of underivatized amino acid enantiomers. The chiral column is easily fabricated by modifying the inner surface of a capillary with a three-dimensional porous layer (PL, thickness ∼ 90 nm, pore size ∼ 30 nm) and gold nanoparticles and by introducing a chiral selector, thiol β-cyclodextrin (SH-β-CD), onto the modified surface via Au-S bonds. This approach greatly enhances the specific surface area and thus the ratio of the stationary phase to mobile phase and interaction between the stationary phase and analytes. The proposed PLOT@Au@CD column is coupled to the sheathless CE-ESI-MS system for chiral analysis of amino acid enantiomers. No derivatization of amino acids is required for chiral analysis, and baseline separation of a total of 15 pairs of amino acid enantiomers is achieved within 17 min with high column efficiencies of 5.60 × 10⁴ to 1.82 × 10⁶ N/m, high resolutions of 1.51-10.0, and low limits of detection between 0.02 and 0.09 μg/mL. The separation efficiency and MS intensity are only slightly decreased over 60 runs or after usage for 15 days, showing excellent repeatability and stability of the PLOT@Au@CD column. The proposed method is successfully applied to the determination of amino acid enantiomers in vinegar samples with satisfactory accuracy. Our study provides a new approach for developing a chiral stationary phase in the chromatographic separation technique, which can be easily coupled to sensitive MS detection, thus it would be of value for various applications in the fields of chiral analysis.

Porous layer open-tubular column with styrene and itaconic acid-copolymerized polymer as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography-mass spectrometry

Enhancing the specific surface area of stationary phase is important in chromatographic science, especially in open-tubular column in which the coating only exists on the inner surface. In this work, a porous layer open-tubular (PLOT) column with stationary phase of styrene and itaconic acid-copolymerized polymer was developed. Thermal-initiated polymerization method with strategies like controlling the ratio of reaction reagents to solvents and reaction time, confinement by the narrow inner diameter of capillary were used for preparing the stationary phase with uniform structure and relatively thick layer. Due to the high separation efficiency and capacity, the PLOT column was used for capillary electrochromatography (CEC) separation of multiple groups of analytes like alkylbenzenes, phenyl amines, phenols, vanillins, and sulfonamides with theoretical plates (N) up to 1,54,845 N/m. In addition, due to high permeability of the CEC column and large electroosmotic flow mobility generated by abundant carboxyl groups in the coating material, the PLOT-CEC column was successfully coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) through a sheath flow interface. The developed PLOT-CEC-MS method was used for the analysis of antiseptics like parabens and herbicides like pyridines.

In-situ growth of a spherical vinyl-functionalized covalent organic framework as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography-mass spectrometry analysis

Column technology is an important part in capillary electrochromatographic science. Developing novel stationary phase with high separation efficiency and high loading capacity is an essential work. In this work, a novel spherical vinyl-functionalized covalent-organic framework (COF-V) was synthesized at room temperature and firstly employed as stationary phase for CEC-MS analysis. The COF-V based CEC column was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results proved the successful modification of COF-V. The COF-V based column possesses the advantages like strong electroosmotic flow, high separation efficiency and high loading capacity. The CEC column showed powerful separation selectivity to several kinds of compounds, and the highest column efficiency (theoretical plates, N) was over 1.4 × 10⁵ plates·m^-1 for methylbenzene. Besides, the COF-V modified column exhibited excellent repeatability and stability. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of retention times for intra-day (n = 5), inter-day (n = 3) runs and column-to-column (n = 3) were all less than 2.1%. Hence, the COF-V modified column was successfully applied in CEC-MS for determination of antiepileptic drug, triazine herbicides and active ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine.

Advances in polymeric ionic liquids-based smart polymeric materials: emerging fabrication strategies

Polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) are a class of materials characterized by fascinating physicochemical properties as well as tunable functionality that are quite interesting for the fabrication of materials. They have attracted tremendous attention because they are easy to prepare and can be manipulated into a polymeric matrix via covalent and noncovalent linkage/interactions to form new intelligent/smart polymeric materials with improved properties and multiple functionalities for application in many fields. These new materials are specially designed to change their performance properties when subjected to external environmental stimuli including pH, temperature, light, chemicals and electromagnetic fields. Therefore, this chapter presents the progress in the preparation of PILs via different polymerization reactions and highlights the emerging advances in the fabrication of PILs-based smart polymeric materials.
