Abstract
Antibiotics are the main active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for the treatment and prevention (prophylaxis) of bacterial infections, for which they are essential for health preservation. However, depending on the target bacterial strain, an efficient treatment may imply weeks of continuous intake of antibiotics, whose unmetabolized fraction ends up in the wastewater system by human and animal excreta. The presence of these chemical compounds in wastewater is known to damage aquatic ecosystems and cause antibiotic resistance of pathogenic agents, which threatens the future application of these medicines. Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs), an emergent extraction technology for biomolecules such as proteins and vitamins, could provide more eco-friendly and cost-effective extractive alternatives given their nontoxicity and low energetic requirements. Moreover, choline-amino acid ([Ch][AA]) ionic liquids (also known as CAAILs or ChAAILs) are considered one of the greenest classes of ionic liquids due to their favorable biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ease of chemical synthesis. In this work, partition studies of amoxicillin were performed in three ATPSs containing dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (K2HPO4) and the CAAILs (cholinium l-alaninate, [Ch][Ala]; cholinium glycinate, [Ch][Gly]; and cholinium serinate, [Ch][Ser]) at 298.15 K and 0.1 MPa. To better characterize the extract and reduce errors in quantification, the effect of pH on the intensity and stability of the UV-vis spectra of amoxicillin was studied prior to the partition studies, and computational chemistry was used to validate the molecular structure of the synthesized ionic liquids. During experimental determinations, it was observed that the extraction of amoxicillin was favored by less polar ionic liquids, achieving maximum partition coefficients (K) and extraction efficiencies (E) of K = (16 ± 6)·101 and E / % = 97 ± 2, respectively, for {[Ch][Gly] (1) + K2HPO4 (2) + Water (3)} in the longest tie-line.

Abstract
Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) are considered a new type of green separation system, but their low selectivity to target molecules limits their practical application. In this study, we used surfactant@MWCNT as an adjuvant to improve the selectivity of PEG/(NH4)2SO4 ATPS. The surfactants used include Triton X-100 (TX-100), Tween 80, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS), and bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT). Nine aromatic compounds, including syringic acid, vanillin, tryptophan, phenylalanine, tyrosine, mandelic acid, theophylline, theobromine, and cephalexin, were selected as model extracts. The results showed that the use of the surfactant@MWCNT composite as an adjuvant significantly improved the selectivity of the ATPS toward syringic acid among the nine extracts. Moreover, the selectivity of the ATPS for syringic acid with the TX-100/MWCNT composite as the adjuvant is better than that with the Tween 80/MWCNT composite as the adjuvant, followed by that with the anionic surfactant/MWCNT composite as the adjuvant. The enhanced selectivity of ATPS by the surfactant/MWCNT composite is ascribed to the spatial effect and the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions between the extract and the surfactant adsorbed on the MWCNT.

Abstract
As an environmentally friendly separation medium, the ionic liquid (IL)-based aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) is attracting long-term attention from a growing number of scientists and engineers. Phase equilibrium data of IL-based ATPSs are an important basis for the design and optimization of chemical reactions and separation processes involving ILs. This article provides the recent significant progress that has been made in the field and highlights the possible directions of future developments. The effects of each component (such as salting-out agents and ILs) on the phase behavior of IL-based ATPSs are summarized and discussed in detail. We mainly focus on the phase behavior of ATPSs by using ILs, expecting to provide meaningful and valuable information that may promote further research and application.

Abstract
The microstructures and interactions of choline amino acid ([Cho][AA]) ionic liquid (IL) and water molecules were investigated. When water was added to [Cho][AA], the asymmetric and symmetric vibration peaks of the -COO- group shifted to lower and higher wavenumbers, respectively. The increase of water addition also resulted in increased conductivity values and decreased viscosity values of [Cho][AA]-water mixtures. These features are consistent with the physical picture that [Cho][AA] could gradually dissociate into hydrated tight ion pairs and water-separated ion pairs and then into free and solvated ions. When it comes to different anions (choline lysine, [Cho][Lys], and choline aspartic acid, [Cho][Asp]), the anion structure has a significant regulation on [Cho][AA]-water interactions. The shorter side chain length and strong polar -COOH group of Asp- endow [Cho][Asp] with stronger cation-anion interactions and less dissociation by water molecules. As a result, the frequency shift degrees and conductivity values of [Cho][Asp]-water mixtures were lower, and the viscosity values were higher than those of [Cho][Lys]-water mixtures. And, [Cho][Lys] could completely dissociate as free hydrated ions at w : IL ≥ 7 : 3, while the free hydrated ions of [Cho][Asp] only occurred when the w : IL ratio reached 8 : 2. These results can ease the experimental effort and improve the application efficiency of [Cho][AA] ILs.
