Applications of magnetic solid-phase extraction in the sample preparation of natural product analysis (2020-2023)

Sample preparation, including extraction, separation, and purification, is a vital process for natural product analysis. As an attractive sample pretreatment method, magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has gained plenty of attention, mainly due to its simpler operation, less consumption of organic solvents, and shorter processing time than traditional SPE. This updated review is devoted to summarizing the applications of MSPE based on different magnetic nanomaterials in the analysis of various natural products in complex matrixes, such as biological samples, plants, and Chinese herbal preparations in the past four years (2020-2023). The preparation and fabrication of different materials are briefly introduced. Furthermore, the extraction mechanism and interaction forces between adsorbent and analytes are elaborated, and the advantages and disadvantages of different adsorbents coupled with various analytical methods for MSPE of different natural products are summarized. Moreover, the future trends and opportunities for MSPE in the natural product analysis are discussed. It is expected that this work can provide updated information for future research on the applications of MSPE in such fields.

Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers using ternary deep eutectic solvent as novel functional monomer for hydroxytyrosol separation

In this work, magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for specific recognition of Hydroxytyrosol (HT) were designed by vinyl-modified magnetic particles (Fe3O4@SiO2@VTEOs) as carrier, ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) as functional monomer, while ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as crosslinker. The optimum amount of DES was obtained by adsorption experiments (molar ratio, caffeic acid: choline chloride: formic acid = 1:6:3) which were 140 μL in total. Under the optimized amount of DES, the maximum adsorption capacity of the MIPs particles was 42.43 mg g-1, which was superior to non-imprinted polymer (4.64 mg g-1) and the imprinting factor (IF) is 9.10. Syringin and Oleuropicrin were used as two reference molecules to test the selectivity of the DES-MIPs particles. The adsorption capacity of HT was 40.11 mg g-1. Three repeated experiments show that the polymer has high stability and repeatability (RSD = 5.50).

Recent advance on microextraction sampling technologies for bioanalysis

The contents of target substances in biological samples are usually at low concentration levels, and the matrix of biological samples is usually complex. Sample preparation is considered a very critical step in bioanalysis. At present, the utilization of microextraction sampling technology has gained considerable prevalence in the realm of biological analysis. The key developments in this field focus on the efficient microextraction media and the miniaturization and automation of adaptable sample preparation methods currently. In this review, the recent progress on the microextraction sampling technologies for bioanalysis has been introduced from point of view of the preparation of microextraction media and the microextraction sampling strategies. The advance on the microextraction media was reviewed in detail, mainly including the aptamer-functionalized materials, molecularly imprinted polymers, carbon-based materials, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, etc. The advance on the microextraction sampling technologies was summarized mainly based on in-vivo sampling, in-vitro sampling and microdialysis technologies. Moreover, the current challenges and perspective on the future trends of microextraction sampling technologies for bioanalysis were briefly discussed.

Facile preparation of biomimetic mineralized COFs based on magnetic silk fibroin and its effective extraction of sulforaphane from cruciferous vegetables

A novel biomimetic mineralized covalent organic framework (BM-COF) was prepared based on magnetic silk fibroin and a new sulforaphane pretreatment technology was constructed. First, metal coordination was performed on the surface of silk fibroin, and nanoparticles were deposited by in-situ mineralization after co-precipitation. Then, biomineralized COFs were prepared by in-situ self-assembly of a COF layer on Fe3O4@silk fibroin surface guided by interfacial directional growth technology. The BM-COFs had a multilayer structure, large specific surface area and pore volume, and superparamagnetic properties, which make them an ideal adsorbent. The adsorption of sulforaphane by BM-COFs is mainly multi-molecular layer adsorption and chemisorption, there might be electrostatic action, π-stacking and hydrogen bonding in the adsorption process. The composite material was successfully used for the pretreatment of sulforaphane in cruciferous vegetables. An extraction time of 30 min gave extraction efficiencies as high as 92%, and the recovery could reach more than 73%.

Synthesis and evaluation of a chitosan nanomaterial as efficient sorbent for determination of fungicide residues in waters and wine by liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry

In the present study a novel, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient analytical method was developed to analyze fungicide residues in water and wine. The method relies on the application of a newly developed sorbent nanomaterial named Nano-Cs-NAT, synthesized by modifying chitosan, a naturally occurring, low-cost polysaccharide, through grafting with two acrylic monomers and a cross-linker. Nano-Cs-NAT was introduced as analytical sorbent for Dispersive Micro Solid Phase Extraction (D-μ-SPE) before Liquid Chromatography-Orbitrap High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC-Orbitrap HRMS) analysis of twelve fungicides commonly used in viticulture (among the others, triazoles, strobilurines and N-substituted imidazoles). Characterization of the sorbent was conducted, confirming the successful acrylation of chitosan. A multivariate approach was employed to optimize D-μ-SPE extraction parameters. The material was found to be highly effective in simultaneously purifying and concentrating the target analytes, enhancing overall analytical efficiency and sensitivity. The Nano-Cs-NAT-D-μ-SPE-LC-Orbitrap-HRMS method was thoroughly validated, exhibiting good recoveries (72-104%), reproducibility (average RSD ≤ 6%) and repeatability (average RSD ≤ 7%). It also achieved low limits of detection (LOD) in river water (average LOD of 0.04 μg L-1) and wine (average LOD of 0.72 μg kg-1), highlighting its potential for routine fungicide residue analysis. This developed method addresses environmental and food safety concerns by providing an efficient solution for detecting fungicide residues in waters and wine.

Computational simulation-assisted design and experimental verification of molecularly imprinted polymers for selective extraction of chlorogenic acid

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is an active ingredient in honeysuckle with a broad-spectrum of antibacterial activity, suppressing tumor growth and other pharmacological effects. However, it is susceptible to damage during traditional extraction and separation processes. Therefore, developing selective and efficient extraction methods of CGA is essential. Based on computational molecular simulations, a reliable and efficient molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were successfully developed for selective extraction of CGA. MIPs and non-molecularly imprinted polymers (NIPs) were synthesized using a precipitation polymerization method, employing three different functional monomers: [methacrylic acid (MAA), 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP), and methyl methacrylate (MMA)], with CGA serving as the template molecule. To simulate the polymers and predict the optimal ratio between the template and functional monomer, the computational studies and adsorption performance experiments were carried out. The adsorption characteristics and thermal stability of polymers were evaluated by isothermal adsorption, adsorption kinetics, selective adsorption and thermogravimetric analysis, aiming to obtain the MIPs with specific recognition and selectivity for CGA. When the molar ratio of template CGA to functional monomer 4-VP was 1:8, the prepared MIPs was found to have the maximum adsorption capacity (14.85 mg g-1) and the highest imprinting factor (1.74) at the CGA concentration of 100 mg L-1. These results were consistent with those obtained by computational molecular simulation. This study not only provides good guidance for developing separation materials for extracting CGA from natural plants but also inspires the application of computer simulation and molecular docking techniques in the preparation of specific MIPs materials.

Construction of a molecularly imprinted fluorescent sensor based on an amphiphilic block copolymer-metal-organic framework for the detection of oxytetracycline in milk

A metal-organic framework (MOF) is a good carrier for molecular imprinting due to its high surface area and strong adsorption capacity, but its poor dispersibility in aqueous solution is one of the significant drawbacks, which can severely impede its effectiveness. Amphiphilic block copolymers are good hydrophilic materials and have the potential to overcome the shortcomings of MOFs. In order to improve the hydrophilicity of molecularly imprinted fluorescent materials, we have applied a combination of molecularly imprinted technology and amphiphilic block copolymers on MOFs for the first time. Amphiphilic PAVE copolymer is selected as the molecular imprinted functional monomer to improve the hydrophilicity of UiO-66-NH2. The synthesized PAVE-MOF-MIP has adequate water dispersion ability and fluorescence activity. When encountering oxytetracycline, PAVE-MOF-MIP will produce fluorescence quenching, it is used to construct a fluorescence detection platform for oxytetracycline detection. Compared with traditional MIP@MOF, PAVE-MOF-MIP has better water dispersion ability and detection accuracy. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of oxytetracycline detection is 10-100 μmol L-1, and the minimum limit of detection (LOD) is 86 nmol L-1. This paper proposes a novel approach to use amphiphilic block copolymers as molecularly imprinted monomers on MOFs, providing an innovative idea that has not been previously explored.

Melatonin and metformin co-loaded nanoliposomes efficiently attenuate liver damage induced by bile duct ligation in rats

In the current study, the therapeutic effectiveness of the metformin (Met) and melatonin (Mel) co-loaded liposomes was investigated on cholestasis induced by bile duct ligation (BDL) in male rats. Histopathological analysis, biochemical analysis, and oxidative stress markers were assayed to determine the therapeutic effect of Met and Mel co-loaded liposomes on cholestasis. Histopathological analysis revealed that the simultaneous administration of Met and Mel, whether in the free (C-Mel-Met) or liposomal (C-Lipo-Mel-Met) forms, reduced inflammation as well as proliferation of bile ducts; however, results were more prominent in the liposomal form of Mel and Met. Additionaly, serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were significantly (p < 0.001) higher in (C-Mel-Met) treated rats compared with (BDL) rats; however, (C-Lipo-Mel-Met) treated rats exhibited significant (p < 0.05) lower AST rates in comparison to (BDL) rats. Moreover, a significant (p < 0.0001) drop in bilirubin levels was detected in (C-Lipo-Mel-Met) treated rats in comparison to (BDL) rats; it is noteworthy mentioning that bilirubin levels in (C-Lipo-Mel-Met) treated rats were insignificant in comparison to sham-control (SC) rats. Furthermore, rats concomitantly administered Met and Mel, exhibited significant downregulation in the expression levels of inflammatory cytokine genes such as TNF-α and IL-1 gene expression, where the downregulation was more prominent in the liposomal from. Our findings demonestrate that the concomitant administration of metformin and melatonin in the liposomal form had more therapeutic effect on liver injury than their free forms through improving histological changes, reducing biochemical markers and favoring oxidant- antioxidant balance.

Recovery and utilization of waste filtrate from industrial biological fermentation: Development and metabolite profile of the Bacillus cereus liquid bio-fertilizer

Most fermentation waste filtrates can be used as raw materials for producing bio-fertilizers to reduce wastewater emissions and environmental pollution, but their bio-fertilizer utilization depends on the nutrients contained and their metabolized by functional microorganism. To achieve bio-fertilizer utilization of Acremonium terricola fermented waste filtrate, this study systematically explored the functional microbial species for making good use of waste liquid, optimized material process parameters for bio-fertilizer production based on D-optimal mixture design method, and analyzed the composition of the waste filtrate and its metabolism by functional microorganisms using a non-targeted LC-MS metagenomics technique. The results showed that Bacillus cereus was the functional microbial candidate for producing bio-fertilizer because of its more efficiently utilize the waste filtrate than other Bacillus sp. The optimal material process parameters of the liquid bio-fertilizer were the inoculum dose of 5% (v:v, %), 80% of waste filtrate, 0.25% of N, 3.5% of P2O5, 3.25% of K2O of mass percentage. Under these conditions, the colony forming unit (CFU) of Bacillus cereus could reach (1.59 ± 0.01) × 108 CFU/mL, which met the bio-fertilizer standard requirements of the People's Republic of China (NY/T798). Furthermore, the potential functions of bio-fertilizer were studied based on comparison of raw materials and production components: on the one hand, waste filtrate contained abundant of nitrogen and carbon sources, and bioactive substances secreted by Acremonium terricola, such as β-alanyl-L-lysine, anserine, UMP, L-lactic acid and etc., which could meet the nutrient requirements of the growth of Bacillus cereus; On the other hand, some compounds of waste filtrate with the potential to benefit the plant growth and defense, such as betaine aldehyde, (2E,6E)-farnesol, homogentisic acid and etc., were significantly up regulated by Bacillus cereus utilization of the filtrate. To sum up, this work highlighted that the waste filtrate could be efficiently developed into liquid bio-fertilizer by Bacillus cereus.

SPE of gallic acid and ascorbic acid in fruits using polymerized deep eutectic solvent-modified substrate

Aim: Novel substrates were synthesized by porous and nonporous polymerization of deep eutectic solvents on magnetic silica nanoparticles and introduced for dispersive solid-phase extraction of two analytes. Materials & methods: The prepared substrates were characterized, and an extraction procedure was implemented to select the best substrates and eluent. The central composite design acted to optimize the effects of parameters that influenced the extraction efficiencies. Results: For gallic and ascorbic acids, the limits of detection were obtained at 0.136 and 0.165 μM, respectively, with linear ranges of 0.6-125.2 and 0.5-106.8 μM, respectively. Conclusion: The substrate produced good extractions even after being used three-times and was successfully applied for the analysis of real samples.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Pharmaceutical Impurities: Design and Synthesis Methods

The safety of a medicinal product is determined by its pharmacological and toxicological profile, which depends not only on the active substance's toxicological properties, but also on the impurities it contains. Because impurities are a problem that must be considered to ensure the safety of a drug product, many studies have been conducted regarding the separation or purification of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and the determination of impurities in APIs and drug products. Several studies have applied molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to separate impurities in active ingredients and as adsorbents in the sample preparation process. This review presents the design of MIPs and the methods used to synthesise MIPs to separate impurities in APIs and drug product samples, the application of MIPs to separate impurities, and a view of future studies involving MIPs to remove impurities from pharmaceutical products. Based on a comparison of the bulk and surface-imprinting polymerisation methods, the MIPs produced by the surface-imprinting polymerisation method have a higher adsorption capacity and faster adsorption kinetics than the MIPs produced by the bulk polymerisation method. However, the application of MIPs in the analysis of APIs and drug products are currently only related to organic compounds. Considering the advantages of MIPs to separate impurities, MIPs for other impurities still need to be developed, including multi-template MIPs for simultaneous separation of multiple impurities.

Magnetic nanofluid based on hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent for efficient and rapid enrichment and subsequent determination of cinnamic acid in juice samples: Vortex-assisted liquid-phase microextraction

A quick, environmentally friendly and easy approach for the determination of cinnamic acid in juice samples based on the creation and usage of a novel magnetic nanofluid (mixture of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent and magnetic nanoparticles) has been reported. Response surface methodology was applied to justify the contribution of the efficient factors including pH, nanofluid volume, ionic strength and vortex time. Cinnamic acid concentrations were monitored and quantified based on their HPLC peak representing linear correlations under the best operational circumstances showing linearity between 3 and 550 ng mL^-1. The LOD, LOQ, and enrichment factor for cinnamic acid were 0.8 ng mL^-1, 2.7 ng mL^-1 and 57.2, respectively. The proposed method was used for enrichment and subsequent determination of cinnamic acid from juice samples which suggests a potential alternative approach for cinnamic acid analysis in complicated food samples.

Green solid-liquid extraction of cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) cladode dietary fibers. I- optimization, pilot-scale production, and characterization

In this research work, an optimization of an environment friendly extraction method of cactus (Opuntia ficus indica) cladode dietary fibers was conducted. For this purpose, a central composite experimental design with two factors (temperature and time) and five levels was established. The basic objective of this optimization was to maximize fiber yield using hot water as an extraction eco-solvent. The optimum extraction time (330 min) and temperature (100 °C) were determined with a constant medium agitation rate. Additionally, this study also aimed at establishing the validation of the statistical model to carry out the extrapolation of the extraction process at the pilot scale. The fibers extracted at the pilot scale showed yields (45.2 ± 0.01%) in agreement with those obtained through the optimization and validation lab-scale steps (44.97 ± 0.02). Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were conducted to investigate the structure and microstructure of pilot scale-produced fibers. FTIR spectrum and XRD pattern were typical to lignocellulosic fibers results. Sharp and thin peaks characteristic of cellulose were detected. Pure and crystallized phases were recorded with a 45% crystallinity index. SEM analysis presented elongated and organized cells with a uniform structure comparable to cellulosic fibers microstructure.

Transition metal composites for selective analysis of vitamin B2 in rice by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

A novel amino-functionalized zinc ferrite nanoparticles/MXene (ZnFe₂O₄-NH₂/MXene composite which consist of ZnFe₂O₄-NH₂ and single/few layers MXene was designed and synthesized as an efficient extractant for analysis of vitamin B₂ in rice first combined with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). As a result, the single/few layer MXene was tightly attached to the spherical ZnFe₂O₄-NH₂ nanoparticles by electrostatic self-assembly interaction, which present large specific surface area and fast mass transfer rate. The relevant experimental parameters, including the pH of the solution, extraction time, adsorbent amount, desorption solvent, desorption solvent volume and desorption time were investigated and optimized. Under optimum conditions, the ZnFe₂O₄-NH₂/MXene composite exhibited excellent selectivity and adsorption capacity for vitamin B₂ through hydrogen bonding interactions and the metal-π complexation interaction. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic studies were systemically investigated to evaluate the adsorption mechanism and characteristics, which ascribed to chemical adsorption, monolayer adsorption and a spontaneous endothermic process. Furthermore, the performance of the proved method was validated with the good linear correlation coefficient (r = 0.999), low limit of detection (0.86 ng·mL^-1) and the limit of quantification (2.98 ng·mL^-1), satisfactory recoveries (81.7-102.5%) and reasonable accuracy (RSD<7.8%). The theoretical and technological underpinning for investigating the kinship amongst vitamin alterations and the degree of rice storage was set using this suggested approach to assess vitamin B₂ in rice from various years.

Effective extraction of bioactive alkaloids from the roots of Stephania tetrandra by deep eutectic solvents-based ultrasound-assisted extraction

The efficient and green extraction of bioactive ingredients from natural plants play a vital role in their corresponding drug effects and subsequent studies. Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been considered promising new green solvents for efficiently and selectively extracting substances from varied plants. In this work, an environment-friendly DESs-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction (DESs-UAE) procedure was developed for highly efficient and non-polluting extraction of alkaloids from the roots of Stephania tetrandra (ST). A total of fifteen different combinations of DESs, compared with traditional organic solvents (methanol and 95% ethanol) and water, were evaluated for extraction of bioactive alkaloids (FAN and TET) from ST, and the results revealed that DESs system made up of choline chloride and ethylene glycol with mole ratio of 1:2 exhibited the optimal extraction efficiency for alkaloids. Additionally, a four-factor and three-level Box-Behnken design (BBD), a particular pattern of response surface methodology (RSM), was used to optimize extraction conditions. RSM results indicated that the maximum extraction yields of FAN, TET, and TA were attained 7.23, 13.36, 20.59 mg/g, respectively, within extraction temperature of 52 °C, extraction time of 82 min, DES water content of 23% (v/v), and liquid-solid ratio of 23 mL/g. The measured results were consistent with the predicted values. Notably, the optimized DES extraction efficiency of TA, according to the experimental data analysis, is 2.2, 3.3 and 4.1 times higher than methanol, 95% ethanol and water, respectively. Meanwhile, based on 3D response surface plots, interactive effects plots and contour maps, the effects of the aforementioned four essential factors on the extraction yield and their interactions on the response were visualized. The results revealed that the mutual interactions between extraction temperature and liquid-solid ratio exhibited positive effects on all responses, while extraction time and water content in DES posed a negative effect. Therefore, these results suggest that DESs, as a class of novel green solvents, with the potential to substitute organic solvent and water, can be widely and effectively applied to extract bioactive compounds from natural plants.

Highly sensitive detection of okadaic acid in seawater by magnetic solid-phase extraction based on low-cost metal/nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes

Algae toxins pose a severe threat to human health all over the world. In this study, magnetic metal/nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (M-NCNTs) were facilely synthesized based on one-step carbonization and applied for magnetic solid-phase extraction of okadaic acid (OA) from seawater followed by high performance liquid chromatographic tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) analyses. Differences in the physicochemical properties of the three prepared materials (Fe/Co/Ni-NCNTs) were investigated to confirm the best extraction material. Among them, Ni-NCNTs demonstrated a faster extraction rate (10 min) and higher adsorption capacity (223.5 mg g^-1), mainly due to the higher specific surface area, suitable pore structure and more abundant pyridine nitrogen ring. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curve was linear over the range (1.0-800.0 pg mL^-1) with good determination coefficients (R) of 0.9992. The limit of detection (LOD) obtained in multiple replicates was 0.4 pg mL^-1. Three seawater samples were measured by the developed method, 12.3 pg mL^-1 of OA was detected with a satisfying recovery (88.6%-106.7%) and acceptable repeatability (RSD ≤ 4.8%, n = 6). The results demonstrate that M-NCNTs materials are a promising candidate for magnetic solid-phase extraction. Benefiting from its high extraction and interference resistance, the established analytical method is expected to be extended to detect other marine environmental pollutions.

Recent molecularly imprinted polymers applications in bioanalysis

Molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) as extraordinary compounds with unique features have presented a wide range of applications and benefits to researchers. In particular when used as a sorbent in sample preparation methods for the analysis of biological samples and complex matrices. Its application in the extraction of medicinal species has attracted much attention and a growing interest. This review focus on articles and research that deals with the application of MIPs in the analysis of components such as biomarkers, drugs, hormones, blockers and inhibitors, especially in biological matrices. The studies based on MIP applications in bioanalysis and the deployment of MIPs in high-throughput settings and optimization of extraction methods are presented. A review of more than 200 articles and research works clearly shows that the superiority of MIP techniques lies in high accuracy, reproducibility, sensitivity, speed and cost effectiveness which make them suitable for clinical usage. Furthermore, this review present MIP-based extraction techniques and MIP-biosensors which are categorized on their classes based on common properties of target components. Extraction methods, studied sample matrices, target analytes, analytical techniques and their results for each study are described. Investigations indicate satisfactory results using MIP-based bioanalysis. According to the increasing number of studies on method development over the last decade, the use of MIPs in bioanalysis is growing and will further expand the scope of MIP applications for less studied samples and analytes.

Melatonin in different food samples: Recent update on distribution, bioactivities, pretreatment and analysis techniques

Melatonin (MLT) plays a significant role on maintaining the basic physiological functions and regulating various metabolic processes in plentiful organisms. Recent years have witnessed an increase in MLT's share in global market with its affluent functions. However, the worrisome quality issues and inappropriate or excessive application of MLT take place inevitably. In addition, its photosensitive properties, oxidation, complex substrate concentration and trace levels leave exact detection of MLT doubly difficult. Therefore, it is essential to exploit precise, sensitive and stable extraction and detection methods to resolve above questions. In this study, we reviewed the distribution and bioactivities of MLT and conducted a comprehensive overview of the developments of pretreatment and analysis methods for MLT in food samples since 2010. Commonly used pretreatment methods for MLT include not only traditional techniques, but also novel ones, such as solid-phase extraction, QuEChERS, microextraction by packed sorbent, solid phase microextraction, liquid phase microextraction, and so on. Analysis methods include liquid chromatography coupled with different detectors, GC methods, capillary electrophoresis, sensors, and so on. The advantages and disadvantages of different techniques have been compared and the development tendency was prospected.

Advances in Production of Hydroxycinnamoyl-Quinic Acids: From Natural Sources to Biotechnology

Hydroxycinnamoyl-quinic acids (HCQAs) are polyphenol esters formed of hydroxycinnamic acids and (-)-quinic acid. They are naturally synthesized by plants and some micro-organisms. The ester of caffeic acid and quinic acid, the chlorogenic acid, is an intermediate of lignin biosynthesis. HCQAs are biologically active dietary compounds exhibiting several important therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and other activities. They can also be used in the synthesis of nanoparticles or drugs. However, extraction of these compounds from biomass is a complex process and their synthesis requires costly precursors, limiting the industrial production and availability of a wider variety of HCQAs. The recently emerged production through the bioconversion is still in an early stage of development. In this paper, we discuss existing and potential future strategies for production of HCQAs.

Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Selective Recognition of 17β-Estradiol

In this paper, magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) were fabricated on the surface of Fe3O4 by surface molecular imprinting technology, which can selectively adsorb 17β-estradiol (E2). The optimized experiments demonstrated that MMIPs possessed the best adsorption capacity when methanol was used as the solvent and MAA was used as the crosslinking agent, with a molar ratio of E2: MMA: EGDMA as 1:4:50. SEM, FTIR, and XRD were employed to investigate the morphologies of MMIPs and the results demonstrated that the MMIPs that can selectively adsorb E2 were successfully prepared on Fe3O4 particles. The adsorption experiments showed that 92.1% of E2 was adsorbed by the MMIPs, which is higher than the magnetic non-molecularly imprinted polymers (MNIPs). The Freundlich isotherm model was more suitable to describe the adsorption process of E2 by MMIPs. Meanwhile, MMIPs had a better recognition ability for E2 and its structural analogs such as estrone and estriol. The MMIPs still had good adsorption performance after methanol regeneration five times. The prepared MMIPs had the advantages of efficient adsorption ability and high reusability, so they can be applied for selective recognition and removal of E2.

RETRACTED ARTICLE: Mutagenesis combined with fermentation optimization to enhance gibberellic acid GA3 yield in Fusarium fujikuroi

Gibberellic acid (GA3) is a plant growth hormone that plays an important role in the production of crops, fruits, and vegetables with a wide market share. Due to intrinsic advantages, liquid fermentation of Fusarium fujikuroi has become the sole method for industrial GA3 production, but the broader application of GA3 is hindered by low titer. In this study, we combined atmospheric and room-temperature plasma (ARTP) with ketoconazole-based screening to obtain the mutant strain 3-6-1 with high yield of GA3. Subsequently, the medium composition and fermentation parameters were systematically optimized to increase the titer of GA3, resulting in a 2.5-fold increase compared with the titer obtained under the initial conditions. Finally, considering that the strain is prone to substrate inhibition and glucose repression, a new strategy of fed-batch fermentation was adopted to increase the titer of GA3 to 575.13 mg/L, which was 13.86% higher than the control. The strategy of random mutagenesis combined with selection and fermentation optimization developed in this study provides a basis for subsequent research on the industrial production of GA3.

Rapid Screening of Nonalkaloid α-Glucosidase Inhibitors from a Mulberry Twig Extract Using Enzyme-Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles Coupled with UPLC-MS/MS

Mulberry twigs are an important source of α-glucosidase inhibitors. To date, research studies on α-glucosidase in mulberry twigs have mainly focused on alkaloids such as 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ). Preliminary studies have shown that there may be more active nonalkaloid α-glucosidase inhibitors in mulberry twigs. In this study, we immobilized α-glucosidase on Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ for the first time and rapidly screened four nonalkaloid α-glucosidase inhibitors (kuwanon G, kuwanon C, kuwanon H, and morusin) using ligand fishing technology with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) from the mulberry twig extract of Jialing 20, the excellent artificial triploid variety of mulberry cultivated extensively in Southwest China. The half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC₅₀) of kuwanon H and kuwanon G were 2.82 ± 0.68 and 2.83 ± 0.31 μM, respectively, with better inhibition activity than that of DNJ (with an IC₅₀ of 7.04 ± 0.82 μM). Meanwhile, the molecular docking results showed that the action sites of these two isopentenyl flavonoids on α-glucosidase were different from that of DNJ. In brief, this work is beneficial to discovering new α-glucosidase inhibitors from mulberry twigs quickly and accurately and provides a theoretical basis for the mulberry twig extract as a functional food or a natural hypoglycemic drug source, as well as a reference for directional breeding of mulberry, which greatly improves the exploitation and utilization value of mulberry twigs as an agricultural byproduct in the fields of agricultural production, functional food, and natural medicine.

A Core-Shell Amino-Functionalized Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Based on Glycidyl Methacrylate for Dispersive Solid-Phase Microextraction of Aniline

A core-shell amino-functionalized glycidyl methacrylate magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by the suspension polymerization/surface imprinting method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimetry, nitrogen gas adsorption–desorption, and elemental analysis. This MIP was used as the sorbent in dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME) of aniline from textile wastewater prior to high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) measurements. Since aniline is toxic and a probable human carcinogen, its determination in water is of great significance. This is a challenging task because aniline is usually present at trace levels. The effects of different DSPME variables on the preconcentration efficiency have been studied by using the Plackett–Burman screening design of experiments (DoE) followed by response surface methodology optimization using the Box-Behnken design. Thus, DoE enabled the investigation of several variables simultaneously. Under optimized conditions, aniline was effectively and selectively separated by a small amount of the DSPME sorbent and detected in real textile wastewater samples. The method detection limit of 1 ng mL−1 was attained, with good method linearity and acceptable recovery and precision. The results showed that the studied MIP could be a reliable DSPME sorbent for efficiently analyzing trace aniline in real wastewater samples.

Factors Affecting the Analytical Performance of Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

During the last few years, separation techniques using molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs) have been developed, making certain improvements using magnetic properties. Compared to MIP, Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) have high selectivity in sample pre-treatment and allow for fast and easy isolation of the target analyte. Its magnetic properties and good extraction performance depend on the MMIP synthesis step, which consists of 4 steps, namely magnetite manufacture, magnetic coating using modified components, polymerization and template desorption. This review discusses the factors that will affect the performance of MMIP as a selective sorbent at each stage. MMIP, using Fe₃O₄ as a magnetite core, showed strong superparamagnetism; it was prepared using the co-precipitation method using FeCl₃·6H₂O and FeCl₂·H₂O to obtain high magnetic properties, using NH₄OH solution added for higher crystallinity. In magnetite synthesis, the use of a higher temperature and reaction time will result in a larger nanoparticle size and high magnetization saturation, while a higher pH value will result in a smaller particle size. In the modification step, the use of high amounts of oleic acid results in smaller nanoparticles; furthermore, determining the correct molar ratio between FeCl₃ and the shielding agent will also result in smaller particles. The next factor is that the proper ratio of functional monomer, cross-linker and solvent will improve printing efficiency. Thus, it will produce MMIP with high selectivity in sample pre-treatment.

Generic imprinted fiber array strategy for high-throughput and ultrasensitive simultaneous determination of multiple neonicotinoids

Herein, a new generic fiber array based on molecular imprinting solid-phase microextraction (MIP-SPME) technology, was described to enrich trace multiple neonicotinoids with high flux from the food matrix. To begin with adsorption experiments coupled with theoretical calculations provided universal means for selecting the preferred template molecule clothianidin (CLT). Results demonstrated that the CLT-MIP fiber array exhibited significantly superior enrichment ability of 1189-2356-folds for six neonicotinoids compared with two kinds of commercial fiber arrays. Furthermore, the practicability of the CLT-MIP fiber array was verified by simultaneously determining multiple neonicotinoids in tea and honey samples. The CLT-MIP fiber array showed a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03-0.58 μg/L for six neonicotinoids. The method also exhibited satisfactory recoveries ranging from 85.4% to 116.8% with RSD (n = 3) less than 8.8%. The imprinted fiber array has the advantages of high-throughput, predominant reproducibility, and accurate quantitation multi-component, and it may open up a new mean to efficiently enrich high-throughput and simultaneously detect multiple compounds from food samples.

Graphene Oxide Molecularly Imprinted Polymers as Novel Adsorbents for Solid-Phase Microextraction for Selective Determination of Norfloxacin in the Marine Environment

In this study, a novel sample pretreatment strategy of solid-phase microextraction using graphene oxide molecularly imprinted polymers as adsorbents coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was developed to detect norfloxacin in the marine environment. As a carrier, the imprinted polymers were synthesized by precipitation polymerization with graphene oxide. Compared with graphene oxide non-imprinted polymers, the graphene oxide molecularly imprinted polymers exhibited higher adsorption capacity towards norfloxacin. The synthesized polymeric materials were packed into a molecularly imprinted solid-phase microextraction cartridge, and critical parameters affecting the extraction process were optimized. Under the optimized molecular imprinted solid-phase microextraction condition, the proposed method was applied to the analysis of norfloxacin for seawater and fish with satisfactory recovery (90.1–102.7%) and low relative standard deviation (2.06–5.29%, n = 3). The limit of detection was 0.15 μg L⁻¹ and 0.10 μg kg⁻¹ for seawater and fish, respectively. The study revealed that the proposed molecularly imprinted solid-phase microextraction represents an attractive sample pretreatment strategy for the analysis of norfloxacin in the marine environment.

Molecularly imprinted polymers: preparation, characterisation, and application in drug delivery systems

Molecular imprinting technology defines the creation of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) molecules in which template molecules can place in a key-lock relationship through shape, diameter, and functional groups. Although molecular imprinting technology has been employed in different fields, its applications in drug delivery systems (DDSs) have gained momentum recently. The high loading efficiency, high stability, and controlled drug release are the primary advantages of MIPs. Here, the main components, preparation methods, and characterisation tests of MIPs are summarised, and their applications in DDSs administered by different routes are evaluated in detail. The review offers a perspective on molecular imprinting technology and applications of MIPs in drug delivery by surveying the literature approximately 1998-2021 together with the outlined prospects.

Synthesis and evaluation of UiO-66@MIP towards norfloxacin in water

Norfloxacin (NOX), a kind of quinolone antibiotic, is widely used in disease treatment and the control of human and livestock products. Due to overuse, norfloxacin has become a common organic pollutant in water. We combine the high specific surface area and high stability of metal–organic frameworks with the high selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymers. By grafting a carbon–carbon double bond on the surface of UiO-66–NH₂, a molecularly imprinted layer is formed on the surface of UiO-66–NH₂ upon free radical polymerization. The saturated adsorption capacity of UiO-66@MIP reaches 58.01 mg g⁻¹. UiO-66@MIP exhibits high adsorption performance in real water samples and its recoveries range from 96.7% to 98.3%, which demonstrates a higher adsorption capacity and recovery than other molecularly imprinted materials and has potential applications in the removal of norfloxacin in real life.

In this study, UiO-66@MIP was synthesized to remove NOX. The ability of UiO-66@MIP to adsorb norfloxacin in actual wastewater was also explored.

Up-to-date studies regarding the determination of melatonin by chromatographic methods

Melatonin is an indolic compound that has been reported in the literature to exist in human-based samples, vertebrates, vegetables, fruits, and pharmaceutical products. Melatonin is considered a dietary supplement and can regulate circadian rhythms, although it has not been classified as a drug by the US Food and Drug Administration. Several analytical methods have been used for its detection. This study aimed to summarize the recent outcomes of the chromatographic methods such as electrophoretic methods, gas chromatography, and liquid chromatography, which have been used for the determination of melatonin in the last three decades, with the focus on gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography methods.

Highly effective pre-concentration of thymol and carvacrol using nano-sized magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer based on experimental design optimization and their trace determination in summer savoury, Origanum majorana and Origanum vulgare extracts

To ascertain thymol and carvacrol in pharmaceutical syrups, a valid and effective magnetic molecular imprinted polymer dispersive solid phase microextraction (MMIP-DSPME) process was developed in this study, which was in combination with a high performance liquid chromatography-ultra violet (HPLC-UV) technique for the assessment of thymol and carvacrol separation and pre-concentration. Contact time, eluent kind and volume, pH, the mass of the MMIP were all taken into consideration as key factors. Design expert and multi-objective response surface methodology (RSM) were used to optimize these variables. The mass of the MMIP, sample pH, eluent kind, time of sorption, the volume of eluent, and time of elution were 10 mg, 6, acetonitrile, 28 min, 200 µL, and 5.5 min, respectively, for the maximum extraction recovery of the analytes. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.042 ng mL^-1 at the optimal conditions, while the value for the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.140 ng mL^-1. At the optimized conditions for thymol and carvacrol, the suggested MMIP sorbent had sorption capacities of 64.1 and 72.6 mg g^-1, respectively. Furthermore, for triplicate measurements, the linear dynamic range (LDR) was 0.40-5000 ng mL^-1, and the method's accuracy (RSD %) was 6.26%. The saturation magnetization for the MMIP was 19.0 emu g^-1 obtained by VSM, allowing the sorbent to be separated quickly. The sorption experiments confirmed the large sorption capacity of the MMIP for thymol and carvacrol, as well as its homogeneous binding sites. The extraction recovery for thymol and carvacrol was 96.9-103.8% and 96.6-105.4%, respectively, at all spiked amounts (20, 100, 200, and 500 ng mL^-1). The findings of seven desorption-regeneration cycles using MMIP demonstrated the high stability of the sorbent. The MMIP revealed a particular behavior of sorption for thymol and carvacrol, implying a selective, simple, effective, and flexible analytical method.

Magnet integrated fabric phase sorptive extraction of selected endocrine disrupting chemicals from human urine followed by high-performance liquid chromatography - photodiode array analysis

In current paper, a new advanced modification of fabric phase sorptive extraction is introduced for the first time. This advantageous configuration that integrates the stirring and extraction mechanism into a single sample preparation device was originated by equally considering the beneficial role of the increase of extraction kinetics and more specifically of diffusion on the extraction efficiency of the equilibrium based microextraction techniques and the need for integrating and unite processes for better promotion and implementation of the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry. The resulted magnet integrated fabric phase sorptive extraction (MI-FPSE) device was the spearhead to develop a new analytical methodology for the determination of selected very common endocrine disrupting chemicals as model analytes in human urine by high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array analysis. More specifically, the sol-gel Carbowax 20 M coated on hydrophilic cellulose fabric substrate, MI-FPSE device was efficiently employed for the establishment of a new extraction protocol before the chromatographic determination. The sample preparation workflow was methodically optimized in terms of the elution solvent mixture, the volume of the sample, the extraction and the elution time, the stirring speed during the extraction, the ionic strength, and the pH of the sample matrix. The chromatographic separation was performed on a Spherisorb C18 column and a gradient elution program within 14 minutes. Mobile phase consisted of 0.05 ammonium acetate aqueous solution and acetonitrile. The method was validated towards linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, precision, accuracy, and stability. LOD and LOQ ranged between 1.05-1.80 and 3.5-6.0 ng/mL, while %RSD values were found lower than 9.0% in all cases. The method was efficiently applied to the bioanalysis of real samples. All the chosen EDCs were measured at high detection levels. The new MI-FPSE device has demonstrated its performance superiority as a magnet integrated stand-alone extraction device and could be considered as a significant improvement in the field of analytical/bioanalytical sample preparation.

The Use of Computational Methods for the Development of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of theoretical and computational approaches in the study and development of molecular imprinting systems. These tools are being used to either improve understanding of the mechanisms underlying the function of molecular imprinting systems or for the design of new systems. Here, we present an overview of the literature describing the application of theoretical and computational techniques to the different stages of the molecular imprinting process (pre-polymerization mixture, polymerization process and ligand-molecularly imprinted polymer rebinding), along with an analysis of trends within and the current status of this aspect of the molecular imprinting field.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Dispersive (Micro)Solid Phase Extraction: A Review

The review describes the development of batch solid phase extraction procedures based on dispersive (micro)solid phase extraction with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and magnetic MIPs (MMIPs). Advantages and disadvantages of the various MIPs for dispersive solid phase extraction and dispersive (micro)solid phase extraction are discussed. In addition, an effort has also been made to condense the information regarding MMIPs since there are a great variety of supports (magnetite and magnetite composites with carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, or organic metal framework) and magnetite surface functionalization mechanisms for enhancing MIP synthesis, including reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Finally, drawbacks and future prospects for improving molecularly imprinted (micro)solid phase extraction (MIMSPE) are also appraised.

Ultrasound-assisted solid phase microextraction-HPLC method based on Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-molecularly imprinted polymer magnetic nano-sorbent for rapid and efficient extraction of harmaline from Peganum harmala extract

In the present study, a magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) was synthesized for the extraction of harmaline from Peganum harmala by dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME). The MMIP for selective and intelligent extraction of harmaline with excellent functionality and high selectivity was synthesized using the sol-gel method with functionalized superparamagnetic core-shell nanoparticles, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as a cross-linker, methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer, and 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as a porogen. To study the properties and morphology of the coated polymer, FT-IR spectroscopy, FESEM, TEM images, and VSM were used. The DSPME-HPLC-UV equipment was used to quantify and analyze the data obtained from harmaline extraction. In this research, the efficiency of the synthesized polymer in harmaline extraction was modeled and optimized using the response surface methodology based on central composite design (RSM-CCD). In addition, for modeling the isotherm of harmaline sorption by the MMIP, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations were used. The obtained results showed that the extraction of harmaline with the MMIP was well described with Freundlich isotherm. The results of the validation of the method showed that the measurement of harmaline in the concentration range of 1.0-4000 ng mL^-1 followed a linear relationship (R² = 9986.0). Moreover, the accuracy or repeatability index (% RSD) was determined to be < 10, and the LOQ and LOD values were 0.526 and 0.158 ng mL^-1, respectively. The results of this study showed that the DSPME technique by using the synthesized MMIP as an effective sorbent with high efficiency and capacity could be utilized for pre-concentration and extraction of harmaline from real and complex samples.

Highly selective magnetic dual template molecularly imprinted polymer for simultaneous enrichment of sulfadiazine and sulfathiazole from milk samples based on syringe-to-syringe magnetic solid-phase microextraction

Antibiotics, such as sulfadiazine and sulfathiazole, are widely used in veterinary applications which can result in remains in edible animal products. Therefore, there is an immense need for a reliable, selective, sensitive, and simple analytical technique for monitoring the concentration of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfathiazole (STZ) in edible animal products. In this regard, we developed a magnetic dual template molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) to determine the SDZ and STZ in milk samples. For the sensitive and selective extraction and determination of target analytes, MMIPs have been combined with the syringe-to-syringe magnetic solid-phase microextraction (SS-MSPME) method. In addition, we used central composite design (CCD) for the extraction of SDZ and STZ. With optimum conditions, an efficient, rapid, and convenient technique for the preconcentration and determination of SDZ and STZ in milk samples by SS-MSPME coupling with HPLC-UV was developed. Using our combined approach, the limits of detection are 0.9 and 1.3 ng mL^-1 for SDZ and STZ, respectively, along with good linearity and determination coefficients higher than 0.98. Our method demonstrates a practical approach for the deduction of antibiotics in milk samples with high recoveries and selectivity.

Rethinking the Applications of Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents in Innovative Nano-Sorbents

With the development of green chemistry and nano materials, new alternatives to traditional volatile solvents are one of many important hotspots in the field of nano materials. Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as excellent alternative solvents are being applied in the innovation of nano-sorbents, including nanoparticles, nanogels, and nanofluid. ILs and DESs are often used as carriers/modifiers/dispersers of nano-sorbents to enhance the adsorption capacity and selectivity in the extraction procedure. Various extraction technologies, such as solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, micro-solid phase extraction, hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction, and magnetic solid-phase extraction, have also been promoted by them to achieve rapid development. This paper focused on the latest development of nano-sorbents based on ILs and DESs. The problems and bottlenecks encountered were analyzed in order to provide meaningful and valuable references for the related research and thus promote further development and application of alternative solvents-assisted nano-sorbents.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in bioanalysis

The importance of magnetic nanomaterials and magnetic hybrid materials, which are classified as new generation materials, in analytical applications is increasingly understood, and research on the adaptation of these materials to analytical methods has gained momentum. Development of sample preparation techniques and sensor systems using magnetic nanomaterials for the analysis of inorganic, organic and biomolecules in biological samples, which are among the samples that analytical chemists work on most, are among the priority issues. Therefore in this review, we focused on the use of magnetic nanomaterials for the bioanalytical applications including inorganic and organic species and biomolecules in different biological samples such as primarily blood, serum, plasma, tissue extracts, urine and milk. We summarized recent progresses, prevailing techniques, applied formats, and future trends in sample preparation-analysis methods and sensors based on magnetic nanomaterials (Mag-NMs). First, we provided a brief introduction of magnetic nanomaterials, especially their magnetic properties that can be utilized for bioanalytical applications. Second, we discussed the synthesis of these Mag-NMs. Third, we reviewed recent advances in bioanalytical applications of the Mag-NMs in different formats. Finally, recently literature studies on the relevance of Mag-NMs for bioanalysis applications were presented.

Bacillus cereus liquid fertilizer was produced from Agaricus bisporus industrial wastewater

During the Agaricus bisporus canning processes, a large number of water-soluble elements were dissolved into the processing hot water. This study was conducted to use the industrial wastewater of A. bisporus to prepare agricultural microbial fertilizer. In the work, the influence of 6 different liquid fermentation factors on the total biomass of living Bacillus cereus was evaluated with the one-factor-at-a-time method and the Plackett-Burman design. The total biomass of living B. cereus was most influenced by fermentation temperature, shaking speed, and inoculation volume, which were identified as the most critical independent variables for the B. cereus biomass. The approximate ranges of optimal fermentation conditions for the three key factors were identified by the path of steepest ascent. The center point of these factors were 24 ℃ of temperature, 250 rpm of shaking speed and 12 % inoculum amount, respectively. The Box-Behnken design was applied to derive a statistical model for optimizing the three fermentation factors for B. cereus biomass. After further optimizations based on statistical predictions, the optimum fermentation parameters for B. cereus cultured in the A. bisporus industrial wastewater were fermentation temperature of 24.8 °C, shaking speed of 234 rpm, inoculum dose of 12.2 % (v:v, %), industrial wastewater concentration of 4%, initial pH values of 6.5, loading liquid of 60 mL/250 mL, and culture time of 24 h. Culturing with the optimal fermentation conditions resulted in the biomass of B. cereus of 1.35 ± 0.02 × 10⁹ Obj/mL (N = 3), which was consistent with the predicted values (1.32 × 10⁹ Obj/mL) predicted by the corresponding regression models (p < 0.05), and more, was also far higher than that of the standard of agricultural bacterial fertilizers in People's Republic of China. Further, the results of field trial indicated that the of B. cereus liquid fertilizer can remarkably enhance the yield of Brassica chinensis L. It is practicable to make use of the industrial wastewater of A. bisporus to prepare the microbial fertilizer.

Recent Advances and Future Trends in the Detection of Contaminants by Molecularly Imprinted Polymers in Food Samples

Drug residues, organic dyes, heavy metals, and other chemical pollutants not only cause environmental pollution, but also have a serious impact on food safety. Timely and systematic summary of the latest scientific advances is of great importance for the development of new detection technologies. In particular, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) can mimic antibodies, enzymes and other biological molecules to recognize, enrich, and separate contaminants, with specific recognition, selective adsorption, high affinity, and strong resistance characteristics. Therefore, MIPs have been widely used in chemical analysis, sensing, and material adsorption. In this review, we first describe the basic principles and production processes of molecularly imprinted polymers. Secondly, an overview of recent applications of molecularly imprinted polymers in sample pre-treatment, sensors, chromatographic separation, and mimetic enzymes is highlighted. Finally, a brief assessment of current technical issues and future trends in molecularly imprinted polymers is also presented.
