Advanced technologies in biodegradable packaging using intelligent sensing to fight food waste

The limitation of conventional packaging in demonstrating accurate and real-time food expiration dates leads to food waste and foodborne diseases. Real-time food quality monitoring via intelligent packaging could be an effective solution to reduce food waste and foodborne illnesses. This review focuses on recent technological advances incorporated into food packaging for monitoring food spoilage, with a major focus on paper-based sensors and their combination with smartphone. This review paper offers a comprehensive exploration of advanced macromolecular technologies in biodegradable packaging, a general overview of paper-based probes and their incorporation into food packaging coupled with intelligent sensing mechanisms for monitoring food freshness. Given the escalating global concerns surrounding food waste, our manuscript serves as a pivotal resource, consolidating current research findings and highlighting the transformative potential of these innovative packaging solutions. We also highlight the current intelligent paper-based food freshness sensors and their various advantages and limitations. Examples of implementation of paper-based sensors/probes for food storage and their accuracy are presented. Finally, we examined how intelligent packaging can be an alternative to reduce food waste. Several technologies discussed here have good potential to be used in food packaging for real-time food monitoring, especially when combined with smartphone diagnosis.

Portable and reversible smart labels for non-destructive detection of seafood freshness via amine-response fluorescent ionic liquids

Herein, a functionalized ionic liquid (IL) 7-HDCP (7-hydroxycoumarin-quaternary phosphorus) was developed as NH3 trapping agents and fluorescent indicators to achieve in-time and on-site detection of seafood freshness. Interestingly, the IL displayed remarkable blue fluorescence "turn-on" enhancement to gaseous amine due to excellent amine solubility. By FTIR and 1H NMR spectrogram, this fluorescence "turn-on" phenomenon originated from the weak hydrogen bonding between the ester group of the coumarin functional group and the ammonia molecule. Moreover, the IL exhibited a rapid response (<11 s), prominent sensitivity (0.12 ppm), excellent selectivity (10 interfering substances) and outstanding reversibility (>22 cycles). Benefiting from ion characters, 7-HDCP obtained advantages of easy-to-fabricate and easy-to-use, which was fabricated by one-step simple immersion without aggregation-caused quenching phenomenon. This portable and sensitive smart label made of ion probes facilitates the timely and on-site NH3 detection in the early deterioration stages of aquatic products, enabling "early detection, early warning, and early treatment".

Photo-responsive oxidase-like nanozyme based on a vanadium-docked porphyrinic covalent organic framework for colorimetric L-Arginine sensing

This study reports the development of a vanadium-docked porphyrinic covalent organic framework as a novel class of highly polar photoactive materials. Thanks to its extended π-electron conjugation and high chemical stabilities, this framework can serve as an oxidase-Like photo-nanozyme for photocatalytic oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (o-PDA) and a colorimetric substrate for the production of the yellow-colored oxidized o-PDA (o-PDAox). The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared photo-nanozyme were characterized by several analytical techniques. Its enhanced light harvesting and charge separation and transfer were also verified by electrochemical and spectroscopic analysis. This photo-nonenzymatic colorimetric assay was applied for the sensitive L-Arginine (L-Arg) detection as a typical amino acid in the linear range of 8.1 nM-330 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.5 nM. The findings of this research confirmed the safety and feasibility of the proposed photo-nonenzymatic colorimetric sensing strategy for the detection of L-Arg and other similar biomolecules in food samples. Kinetic investigation revealed that the photo-responsive oxidase mimic exhibits satisfactory K_m (0.47 mM) and V_max (42.0 μM/s) values. This work broadened our insight into the development of modified porphyrinic-COF-based visible light-responsive oxidase-like photo-nanozyme for environmentally friendly colorimetric biosensing.

Advances in the Measurement of Polymeric Colorimetric Sensors Using Portable Instrumentation: Testing the Light Influence

Sustainable and green sensors based on polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) or cellulose polymers, as a case of study of the use of portable instrumentation joined to a smartphone, have been tested. A smartphone camera was used to obtain images and was also coupled to a minispectrometer, without and with an optical fiber probe to register spectra. To study light influence on the analytical signal, light-emitting diode (LED), halogen light and daylight have been assayed. A corrective palette of 24 colors and a set with 45 colors from different color ranges were used as the validation set. The results indicated that halogen light was the best option to obtain the spectra. However, for digital image analysis, it was the LED light that gave a greater approximation of the RGB values of the real colors. Based on these results, the spectra and the RGB components of PDMS solid sensors doped with 1,2-naphtoquinone-4-sulfonate (NQS) for the determination of ammonium in water or urea in urine, PDMS doped with Griess reagent for developing the assay of nitrite in waters and cellulose sensors for the determination of hydrogen sulfide in the atmospheres have been obtained. The results achieved were good in terms of sensitivity and linearity and were comparable to those obtained using a laboratory benchtop instrument. Several rules for selecting the most suitable light source to obtain the spectra and/or images have been established and an image correction method has been introduced.

Improving Sustainability of the Griess Reaction by Reagent Stabilization on PDMS Membranes and ZnNPs as Reductor of Nitrates: Application to Different Water Samples

A new approach based on the use of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes doped with Griess reagents for in situ determination of NO2− and NO3−^- in real samples is proposed. The influence of some doping compounds, on the properties of the PDMS membranes, such as tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), or/and ionic liquids (OMIM PF₆) has been studied. Membrane characterization was performed. To apply the procedure to NO3− determination, dispersed Zn nanoparticles (ZnNPs) were employed. The analytical responses were the absorbance or the RGB components from digital images. Good precision (RSD < 8%) and detection limit of 0.01 and 0.5 mgL⁻¹ for NO2− and NO3−, respectively, were achieved. The approach was satisfactory when applied to the determination of NO2− and NO3− in drinking waters, irrigation and river waters, and waters from canned and fresh vegetables. The results obtained were statistically comparable with those by using nitrate ISE or UV measurement. This approach was transferred satisfactory to 96 wells for multianalysis. This study enables the improvement in the on-site determination of NO2− and NO3− in several matrices. It is a sustainable alternative over the reagent derivatizations in solution and presents several advantages such as being versatile, simplicity, low analysis time, cost, and energy efficiency. The response can be detected visually or by portable instruments such as smartphone.

NQS-Doped PDMS Solid Sensor: From Water Matrix to Urine Enzymatic Application

The development of in situ analytical devices has gained outstanding scientific interest. A solid sensing membrane composed of 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate (NQS) derivatizing reagent embedded into a polymeric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite was proposed for in situ ammonium (NH₄⁺) and urea (NH₂CONH₂) analysis in water and urine samples, respectively. Satisfactory strategies were also applied for urease-catalyzed hydrolysis of urea, either in solution or glass-supported urease immobilization. Using diffuse reflectance measurements combined with digital image processing of color intensity (RGB coordinates), qualitative and quantitative analyte detection was assessed after the colorimetric reaction took place inside the sensing membrane. A suitable linear relationship was found between the sensor response and analyte concentration, and the results were validated by a thymol-PDMS-based sensor based on the Berthelot reaction. The suggested sensing device offers advantages such as rapidity, versatility, portability, and employment of non-toxic reagents that facilitate in situ analysis in an energy-efficient manner.
