Highly-fluorescent extracts from Pterocarpus wood for Fe3+ ion detection

At present, excessive Fe3+ in daily water has become a threat to human health. Among the conventional detection methods for Fe3+, fluorescent probes have been applied on a large scale due to their simplicity and efficiency. However, the currently available fluorescent probes are difficult to synthesize, costly and environmentally unfriendly, limiting their applications. In this work, a fluorescent extract of Pterocarpus wood was successfully obtained, and the structure of some coumarin-based molecules in this extract was determined by 2D-NMR. Subsequently, the intensity of this fluorescence was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), resulting in a high-intensity fluorescent probe. The probe was sensitive to the concentrations of Fe3+ and MnO4-, and could efficiently detects Fe3+ in the range of 2.7 μM-8.0 μM, with LOD and LOQ reaching 1.06 μM and 3.20 μM, respectively. Moreover, based on the strong complexation property of EDTA on Fe3+, this work designed the "switch-on" fluorescent probes. The experiment shows that both static and dynamic quenching exist in this system. The mechanism of complexation and oxidation of fluorescent molecules by the quencher is interpreted in the quenching reaction. In addition, the fluorescent probe has a high yield and low cost, it also performs well in actual water sample tests. This method is expected to be developed as a new way on Fe3+ detection.

A Novel Polymer Inclusion Membrane-Based Green Optical Sensor for Selective Determination of Iron: Design, Characterization, and Analytical Applications

The design, characterization, and analytical application of a green optical sensor for the selective determination of Fe(II) ions is proposed. The sensor is based on the immobilization of the chromogenic reagent picolinaldehyde salicyloylhydrazone (SHPA) within a polymer inclusion membrane. To reduce solvent usage, the reagent was synthesized using a green mechanochemical procedure. The components for sensor preparation were optimized with a sequential simplex method and the optimal composition was found to be 0.59 g cellulose triacetate (base polymer), 0.04 g SHPA (chemosensor reagent), 4.9 mL dibutyl phthalate (plasticizer), and 38 mL dichloromethane (solvent). The conditions of iron analysis were also optimized resulting in pH 6 for aqueous solution, 90 min exposure time and 10 min short-term stability. The optical sensor showed a linear range from the limit of detection (0.48 µmol L-1) to 54 µmol L-1 Fe(II). The precision of the method was found to be 1.44% and 1.19% for 17.9 and 45 µmol L-1 Fe(II), respectively. The characteristics of the sensor allowed the design of a Fe(II)/Fe(III) speciation scheme. The methodology was successfully applied to the determination of iron in food preservatives, food additives, and dietary supplement. Additionally, the Fe speciation scheme was successfully applied to an agricultural fertilizer.

A Fast and Efficient Procedure of Iron Species Determination Based on HPLC with a Short Column and Detection in High Resolution ICP OES

The optimization and application of a new hyphenated procedure for iron ionic speciation, i.e., high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with short cation-exchange column (50 mm × 4 mm) coupled to high resolution inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP hrOES), is presented in this paper. Fe(III) and Fe(II) species were separated on the column with the mobile phase containing pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDCA). The total time of the analysis was approx. 5 min, with a significantly low eluent flow rate (0.5 mL min^-1) compared to the literature. Additionally, a long cation-exchange column (250 mm × 4.0 mm) was used as reference. Depending on the total iron content in the sample, two plasma views were chosen, e.g., an attenuated axial (<2 g kg^-1) and an attenuated radial. The standard addition method was performed for the method's accuracy studies, and the applicability was presented on three types of samples: sediments, soils, and archaeological pottery. This study introduces a fast, efficient, and green method for leachable iron speciation in both geological and pottery samples.

Facile liquid colorimetric sensor using high-density deep eutectic solvent for trace detection and speciation of iron in milk

An efficient colorimetric sensor was developed using a high-density deep eutectic solvent (HD-DES) for the trace detection and speciation of iron in various milk samples. A liquid colorimetric probe was fabricated by dissolving ferrozine (FZ) in HD-DES prepared from TBABr and PBA. The prederivatization of Fe²⁺ via complexation with FZ on the HD-DES/FZ probe provided the [Fe(FZ)₃]^4- complex, which led to a color change from pale yellow to purple before it was simultaneously extracted by HD-DES. The Fe³⁺ content was calculated by subtracting the amount of Fe²⁺ from the total Fe content following the reduction of Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ by L-ascorbic acid in an acid buffer. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed colorimetric sensor exhibited appreciable linearity in the concentration range of 0.003-0.04 mg L^-1, a low limit of detection (0.95 µg L^-1), high enrichment factor (50), and outstanding repeatability. The liquid colorimetric probe was successfully applied for the determination and speciation of iron in milk samples, and the results were compared with those obtained using the standard atomic absorption spectrometry method. Moreover, quantitative analysis was performed on a smartphone using the Image J application to estimate the color intensity change, which eliminated the requirement of sophisticated scientific instruments.

Dual determination of nitrite and iron was proposed by using a single greener sequential injection (SI) spectrophotometric system employing a simple single aqueous extract from Areca catechu Linn. The extract served as a natural reagent to replace N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine (NED) of the Griess reagent with nitrite and 1,10-phenanthroline with iron. The color products possessed analytical wavelengths at 430 and 560 nm, respectively. Conditions for the SI procedure were optimized using a univariate experimental design. Calibration ranges were up to 5.0 mg L⁻¹ and 10.0 mg L⁻¹ with limits of detection (LODs) of 0.04 mg L⁻¹ and 0.05 mg L⁻¹ for nitrite and iron(iii), respectively, and relative standard deviations (RSDs) being less than 3%. Recoveries of spiked standard nitrite and iron(iii) at 0.3 mg L⁻¹ and 0.5 mg L⁻¹ in water samples were 88 to 104% and 84 to 109%, respectively. The developed method successfully achieved dual determination of nitrite and total iron agreeing at a 95% confidence level with the reference methods of the conventional Griess assay and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), respectively. The proposed method utilized locally available material from plants and serves the UN-SDGs.

Elemental and Speciation Analyses of Different Brands of Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis)

In this work, a methodology for determination of As(III), As(V), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), Fe(II) and Fe(III) in fifty-eight samples (forty-nine products of thirteen brands from three countries) commercial yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) was performed. The hyphenated high performance liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (HPLC-ICP OES) technique was used. Arsenic was determined below the quantification limit in 38 samples of yerba mate. As(III) was found at the level 0.09 and 0.08 mg kg⁻¹. The As(V) content was in the range: 0.21 to 0.28 mg kg⁻¹. The content of DMA was found the highest of the three arsenic species in the range: 0.21 to 0.47 mg kg⁻¹. The content of Fe(II) and Fe(III) was found in the range: 0.61 to 15.4 mg kg⁻¹ and 0.66 to 43.1 mg kg⁻¹, respectively and the dominance of Fe(III) was observed. Moreover, total and extractable content of 16 elements were determined. The results have been subjected to statistical analysis in order to establish relationships between samples of the same origin (country), kind (type) and composition (purity).
