Improving the quality of clinical training in maternal and neonatal health in undergraduate nursing students: a participatory action research

BACKGROUND

Improving the quality of clinical training is synonymous with accomplishing nursing education goals and improving the quality of nursing care. This study aimed to improve the quality of clinical training in Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) in nursing students.

METHODS

This action research was conducted in two cycles from June 2017 to June 2018. The study setting was the School of Nursing and Midwifery of Lorestan University of Medical Sciences in southwest Iran. The participants were nursing students, faculty members, clinical trainers, educational managers, and teaching personnel. In the first cycle, semi-structured interviews were held with stakeholders to identify clinical problems and improvement strategies. Based on the results of these sessions, the changes needed to improve the quality of clinical training were planned and implemented. The weaknesses and strengths of the implemented changes were then identified through group discussions with the stakeholders. In the second cycle, a second plan was carried out to correct the weaknesses of the changes planned in the first cycle, and the modifications were implemented and evaluated.

RESULTS

The main three categories extracted included an unsystematic curriculum and inadequate monitoring, inadequate resources and facilities, and the student's lack of motivation. The measures taken for improvement included holding communication workshops, developing and internalizing logbooks, reducing the number of students in clinical training groups, using modern clinical training methods, and changing clinical evaluation methods.

CONCLUSION

Improving communication skills among the students, trainers, and hospital personnel and using modern clinical training methods, such as conceptual maps, triple jumps, and clinical skill centers, are the best strategies for improving clinical training in MNH nursing students.

Concept Mapping in Simulation within Nursing Education: A Scoping Review Protocol

BACKGROUND

Simulation has been found to enhance nursing student knowledge and confidence, as well as to improve clinical performance. The use of concept maps during simulation has been found to play a key role in student learning. There is a need to understand what is known to date about the use of concept mapping in simulation within nursing education. This will help determine the most effective ways to use concept mapping in simulation to foster learning in nursing students. Scoping review question: What is known about the context, processes, and outcomes of concept mapping in simulation within nursing education?

METHODS

The scoping review will be conducted in accordance with JBI methodology for scoping reviews and will search the following databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycMED, EMBASE, and ERIC. This review will consider studies that explore the use of concept mapping in simulation within undergraduate nursing education and will include studies that have used qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods, as well as literature reviews. Editorials, commentaries, and gray literature will be excluded. Studies published from 1992 onward will be included. The data extracted will include details about the participants, how concept mapping was used within simulation, methods, key findings, and research gaps.

Nursing student learning of biosciences through movies and concept maps: A mixed study

BACKGROUND

acquisition of bioscience knowledge is challenging for nursing students. This calls for teaching methodologies that allow them to acquire this knowledge and add value in the nursing context.

OBJECTIVE

to evaluate a teaching experience using a movie clip and the collaborative use of C-Maps in first-year bioscience learning in nursing students.

DESIGN

embedded mixed methods study.

PARTICIPANTS

143 students.

METHODS

data were collected in two phases: first, collecting quantitative data through a questionnaire on utility, satisfaction and perceived competency development, and collecting qualitative data on learning, teaching materials and developed competencies through an open-question instrument. The second phase consisted of a focus group to explore in greater depth learning experience.

RESULTS

six themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: using C-Maps as a learning process; developing group competencies; knowledge integration and transfer; teacher-student relationship; art as a didactic support; and difficulties encountered and proposals for improvement. Regarding utility, the students highlighted learning and relating concepts. Elements of satisfaction were working in small groups and having the teacher as a guide. Finally, the competencies most developed were teamwork and learning ability.

CONCLUSION

the combination of a movie clip and a C-Map is an innovative strategy motivating and valuable for learning biosciences.
