Abstract
A direct transformation of ortho-alkynylated aromatic vinyl ethers to 1-iodonaphthalenes and other iodo-heterocycles under mild Lewis acidic conditions in the presence of iodide as an external nucleophile is reported. The first example of an iodoannulation strategy using a nucleophilic source of iodine, coupled with good to excellent yields, exclusive alpha regioselectivity and a broad substrate scope makes this work an attractive avenue towards the construction of aromatic iodides.

Abstract
Sodium diisopropylamide (NaDA)-mediated metalations of arenes in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/hexane or THF/Me2NEt solutions are described. A survey of >40 benzenoid- and pyridine-based arenes with a range of substituents demonstrates the efficacy and regioselectivity of metalation. Metalations of activated disubstituted arenes and selected monosubstituted arenes are rapid at -78 °C. Rate studies of 1,3-dimethoxybenzene and related methoxylated arenes show exclusively monomer-based orthometalations with two or three coordinated THF ligands. Rate studies of the isotopic exchange of benzene and monosubstituted arenes with weakly activating groups reveal analogous di- and trisolvated monomer-based metalations. Cooperative inductive, mesomeric, steric, and chelate effects are discussed.

Abstract
The reaction of mixtures of aryllithium regioisomers obtained either by directed lithiation or by Br/Li exchange with substoichiometric amounts of Cp2ZrCl2 proceeds with high regioselectivity. The least sterically hindered regioisomeric aryllithium is selectively transmetalated to the corresponding arylzirconium species leaving the more hindered aryllithium ready for various reactions with electrophiles. As an application, these regioselective transmetalations from Li to Zr were used to prepare all three lithiated regioisomers of 1,3‐bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene.

Abstract
The asymmetric bromine-lithium exchange on a series of prochiral biphenyls was investigated. As in many asymmetric organolithium reactions, the chiral ligand (here a diamine) was considered to be the enantiocontrolling element. We show here that the organolithium reagent also plays an important role.

Abstract
The enantioselective synthesis of atropisomeric, tribrominated benzamides and subsequent regioselective transformations to afford derivatized, axially chiral molecules is reported. The enantioenriched tribromides were carried through sequential Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling and lithium-halogen exchange with high regioselectivity and enantioretention. A variety of complexity-generation functional group installations were performed to create a library of homochiral benzamides. The potential utility of these molecules is demonstrated by using a phosphino benzamide derivative as an asymmetric ligand in a Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylation.

Abstract
We report here our results on the FeCl3-diorganyl dichalcogenides intramolecular cyclization of 2-organochalcogen-3-alkynylthiophenes. The cyclization reaction proceeded cleanly under mild reaction conditions giving the (S)-Se-, (S)-S- and (S)-Te-heterocycles in good yields. In addition, the obtained chalcogenophenes were readily transformed into more complex products using the palladium cross-coupling reaction with boronic acids. Conversely, using a metal-halogen exchange reaction with n-BuLi, the chalcogenophenes produced the lithium-intermediate which was trapped with aldehyde furnishing the desired secondary alcohol in good yield.

Abstract
We report the enantioselective synthesis of atropisomeric benzamides employing catalytic electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions involving bromination. The catalyst is a simple tetrapeptide bearing a tertiary amine that may function as a Brønsted base. A series of tri- and dibrominations were accomplished for a range of compounds bearing differential substitution patterns. Tertiary benzamides represent appropriate substrates for the reaction since they exhibit sufficiently high barriers to racemization after ortho functionalization. Mechanism-driven experiments provided some insight into the basis for selectivity. Examination of the observed products at low conversion suggested that the initial catalytic bromination may be regioselective and stereochemistry-determining. A complex between the catalyst and substrate was observed by NMR spectroscopy, revealing a specific association. Finally, the products of these reactions may be subjected to regioselective metal-halogen exchange and trapping with I(2), setting the stage for utility.

Abstract
Regioselective bromine–lithium exchange reactions on polybrominated biaryls enable the modular synthesis of various polysubstituted biphenyls such as bis(dialkylphosphino)-, bis(diarylphosphino)- and dialkyl(diaryl)phosphinobiphenyls. All permutations of substituents at the ortho positions of the biphenyls are possible. In a similar manner, one can gain access to monophosphine analogues. So far, such a process, based on the effective discrimination between bromine atoms as a function of their chemical environment, has been observed only sporadically.

Abstract
A general synthesis of 3-chalcogen benzo[b]furans from the readily available 2-alkynylanisoles, via FeCl(3)/diorganyl dichalcogenides intramolecular cyclization, has been developed. Aryl and alkyl groups directly bonded to the chalcogen atom were used as cycling agents. The results revealed that the reaction significantly depends on the electronic effects of substituents in the aromatic ring bonded to the selenium atom of the diselenide species. We observed that the pathway of reaction was not sensitive to the nature of substituents in the aromatic ring of anisole since both the electron-donating and the electron-withdrawing groups delivered the products in similar yields. In addition, the obtained heterocycles were readily transformed to more complex products by using a chalcogen/lithium exchange reaction with n-BuLi followed by trapping of the lithium intermediate with aldehydes, furnishing the desired secondary alcohols in good yields.

Abstract
The development of organometallic reagents remains one of the most important frontiers in synthetic chemistry. Commonly used organometallic reagents (such as RLi and RMgBr) are typically monometallic compounds, although they aggregate in many cases. When two carbon-metal bonds are in the same molecule in close proximity, however, these two carbon-metal moieties may exhibit novel reactivity. In this Account, we outline our work on new reactions and synthetic applications of the organo-dilithio reagents 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes. The 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes can be accessed readily in high efficiency with a wide variety of substitution patterns on the butadienyl skeleton. The configuration has been predicted and demonstrated to favor a double dilithium bridging structure in both solution and solid states. The two Li atoms are bridged by a butadiene moiety and are in close proximity. By taking advantage of this unique configuration, we have developed useful and interesting synthetic methodologies. Three types of reactions of 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes, termed dilithio reagents here, have been developed and are discussed. An intramolecular reaction is introduced in the first section. The reaction is a result of the intracooperative effect among the two C-Li moieties, the butadienyl bridge, and the substituents. A useful transformation from silylated 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes to α-lithio siloles is described. Second, we discuss an intermolecular reaction that results from the intercooperative effect of the two C-Li moieties toward substrates. As an example of the formation of functionalized cyclic dianions from the linear dianions of the dilithio reagents and organic substrates, we describe the isolation and structural characterization of a novel type of cyclic dianion; that is, fully substituted oxy-cyclopentadienyl dilithium formed via the reaction of dilithio reagents with CO. We also describe diverse reactions of dilithio reagents with nitriles to form substituted pyridines, tricyclic 1-bipyrrolines, and siloles, demonstrating the remarkable effect of substituents on the butadienyl skeleton. Third, we discuss transmetalation of dilithio reagents to generate other organo-dimetallic compounds. This section focuses on organo-dicopper compounds and their reactivity toward the synthesis of strained ring systems, such as semibullvalenes and twisted four-membered rings, with the metal-mediated C-C bond-forming approach. In addition to these three representative reactions, other useful applications are also briefly introduced. The dimetallic 1,4-dilithio-1,3-butadienes and their transmetalated derivatives provide unique synthetic organometallic reagents that are very different from monometallic reagents, both in terms of reactivity and synthetic application. These organo-dimetallic reagents provide access to interesting and useful compounds that are not available by other means. Moreover, given the possibilities afforded, the study of organo-dimetallic and organo-polymetallic compounds should yield further synthetic applications in the near future.
