Abstract
The substrate scope of the asymmetric allylation with zinc organyls catalyzed by 3,3-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-1,1-binaphthyl-2,2-diyl hydrogenphosphate (TRIP) has been extended to non-cyclic ester organozinc reagents and ketones. Tertiary chiral alcohols are obtained with ee's up to 94% and two stereogenic centers can be created. Compared to the previous lactone reagent the stereopreference switches almost completely, proving the fact that the nature of the organometallic compound is of immense importance for the asymmetry of the product.

Abstract
A general process for the high-yielding synthesis of substituted chiral and achiral α-substituted acrylates was achieved through the sequential one-pot combination of a metal-free reductive coupling reaction followed by an Eschenmoser methylenation. The proline catalyzed reaction of Meldrum's acid, aldehydes and Hantzsch ester followed by methylenation was successful with Eschenmoser's salt in the presence of an alcohol solvent. Herein, we have shown the high-yielding synthesis of privileged building blocks from chiral/achiral α-substituted acrylates and shown them to be very good intermediates in the pharmaceuticals and natural products synthesis.

Abstract
A highly regio- and stereoselective synthesis of novel β,γ-disubstituted γ-lactams with either an anti or syn relative configuration was developed from readily available epoxide and aziridine acetates. The key steps include the regio- and diastereocontrolled nucleophilic ring-opening of these three-membered heterocycles followed by mild reductive cyclization of the γ-azido ester intermediate. The method was also extended to an asymmetric synthesis of (4R,5S)-4-hydroxy-5-phenylpyrrolidin-2-one from a chiral epoxide acetate. The main features of this versatile synthesis of functionalized γ-lactams include the involvement of inexpensive reagents and mild conditions together with high chemical efficiency.

Abstract
Bishomoallylic alcohols (pent-4-en-1-ols) underwent efficient oxidative cyclizations, if treated with O(2) and bis{2,2,2-trifluoromethyl-1-[(1R,4S)-1,7,7-trimethyl-2-(oxo-kappaO)bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-3-yliden]ethanolato-kappaO}cobalt(ii) in solutions of 2-propanol at 60 degrees C. Ring closures occurred diastereoselectively and afforded 2,3-trans- (96% de), 2,4-cis- (approximately 60% de), and 2,5-trans-substituted (>99% de) (phenyl)tetrahydrofur-2-ylmethanols as major components. Formation of bicyclic compounds and a 2,3,4,5-substituted oxolane was feasible as exemplified by syntheses of oxabicyclo[4.3.0]nonylmethanols and a derivative of natural product magnosalicin in 61-72% (90-99% de). The effectiveness of tetrahydrofuran synthesis was critically dependent on (i) solvent, (ii) reaction temperature, (iii) initial cobalt concentration, (iv) chain length between hydroxyl and vinyl groups, and (v) substitution at reacting entities. A sequence is proposed for rationalizing observed selectivities.

Abstract
Reactions promoting direct Mannich-type alpha-methylenation of alpha, beta and gamma-ketoesters have been monitored via electrospray ionization mass and tandem mass spectrometric experiments. Key intermediates of the catalytical cycle of this synthetically useful reaction have been intercepted and characterized. The mechanistic information provided by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) guided the optimization of reaction conditions, allowing alpha-methyleneketoesters to be prepared in high yields (80-95%) and in high-enough purity for immediate further manipulation.
