Abstract
A novel method for phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of γ-substituted allenoates with succinimides was developed, which was successfully applied to the synthesis of 2-azaspiro[4.4]nonene-1,3-diones derivatives in 50–96% yield, with high regio- and diastereoselectivities.

Abstract
Several functionalized diazabicyclo[4.3.0]nonenes and other heterocycles have been prepared as potential peptidomimetic scaffolds. A novel and efficient method has been developed for the preparation of N-substituted gamma-lactams 13. Preparation of amidine-containing 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]nonenes 43 and 44 has been achieved through Hg-mediated cyclization of the precursor N-aminopropyl-gamma-thiolactams and subsequent functional group manipulation. Bicycle 43 represents a novel scaffold for potential peptide turn mimetics, whereas 44 could potentially be employed as an alpha-helix template attached to the C-terminus of peptides. These compounds are novel additions to the current range of small-molecule constrained peptidomimetics.

Abstract
[Reaction: see text] Practical asymmetric synthesis of functionalized aza-cyclic alpha-amino acid derivatives possessing quaternary stereocenters has been achieved by the phase-transfer-catalyzed alkylation of 2 or 3 using chiral quaternary ammonium bromide 1 as catalyst. Subsequent reduction and alkylation of the 3-keto carbonyl moiety of 4 proceeded with complete diastereochemical control to afford the corresponding beta-hydroxy aza-cyclic alpha-amino acid derivatives having stereochemically defined consecutive quaternary carbon centers.

Abstract
The influence of several modifications on the GPE tripeptide structure upon the binding to GluRs and on their neuroprotective effects has been studied. The results indicated that the prevention of neuronal death showed by GPE and some analogues is not directly related to their affinity at glutamate receptors.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Starting from natural proline, a practical chirospecific synthesis of spirocyclic beta-lactams of type 2 is described when a methylene moiety showing minimal steric demand is employed as a constraint element for adjusting the dihedral angle psi(i + 1). Employing the concept of self-reproduction of chirality, C-formylation of the oxazolidinone 5 afforded the key intermediate 7 taking advantage of an intermediate protection of the bridging element as a vinyl moiety. NMR- and IR-based conformational studies clearly indicated that spiro-beta-lactams of type 2 can serve as efficient beta-turn nucleators.
