Bicyclo[2.2.2]octene-based molecular spacers. Construction of U-shaped syn-facial etheno-bridged polyhydrononacenyl frameworks

Photochemically Driven Tandem Process in the Construction of a Biscyclopropylcage from 2,5-Dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone and Terminal Acetylenes

A photochemical two-step one-pot synthesis of novel biscyclopropyl-box-shaped compounds via the reaction of 2,5-dimethoxy-para-benzoquinone and monosubstituted alkynes is reported. The reaction mechanism for a process in which six new C-C bonds are formed is explored by means of experimental and computational techniques. The whole process occurs with complete selectivity, and only one densely decorated diastereomer is obtained; such a degree of control and substitution makes for a rather powerful and complexity-building process.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis of Cyclobutanes by Olefin [2 + 2] Photocycloaddition Reactions

The [2 + 2] photocycloaddition is undisputedly the most important and most frequently used photochemical reaction. In this review, it is attempted to cover all recent aspects of [2 + 2] photocycloaddition chemistry with an emphasis on synthetically relevant, regio-, and stereoselective reactions. The review aims to comprehensively discuss relevant work, which was done in the field in the last 20 years (i.e., from 1995 to 2015). Organization of the data follows a subdivision according to mechanism and substrate classes. Cu(I) and PET (photoinduced electron transfer) catalysis are treated separately in sections 2 and 4 , whereas the vast majority of photocycloaddition reactions which occur by direct excitation or sensitization are divided within section 3 into individual subsections according to the photochemically excited olefin.

Synphos modified Pt nanoclusters, their heterogenization by silica sol-gel entrapment, and catalytic activity in hydrogenolysis of bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-enes and hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate

Platinum (Pt) colloids modified by the chiral ligand synphos were prepared with the goal of obtaining a catalytic nanomaterial and were subsequently embedded in silica to form a heterogeneous catalyst. The systems were characterized by (31)P-NMR, x-ray diffraction, molecular modeling and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTs) measurements. These colloids, both as 'quasi-homogeneous catalysts' (or soluble heterogeneous catalysts) and embedded in silica (heterogeneous catalysts) were employed in the selective hydrogenolysis of highly sterically constrained bicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-enes and hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate.

Synthesis and luminescence properties of U-shaped polycyclic molecules containing syn-facial functionalized quinoxaline rings

[reaction: see text] Rigid U-shaped molecules containing syn-facially situated quinoxaline rings have been synthesized in three steps, by a combination of the Diels-Alder reaction, the ruthenium-catalyzed oxidation, and the Zn(OAc)(2)-catalyzed condensation of the resulting bis-alpha-diketones with benzene-1,2-diamines. The unsymmetric bis-quinoxalines, with electronically different substituents, and the quinoxaline ring-attached alpha-diketones were also prepared. Their luminescence properties were examined and described.
