Abstract
A general and efficient method for the synthesis of azabicyclo[4,3,0]nonanone and azabicyclo[5,3,0]decanone amino acid derivatives was developed with the palladium-catalyzed coupling of intermediates 9 and 10 with BocNH2 and Boc2NH and the following reduction of the C-C double bond by hydrogenation as the key steps. The exploration of the synthesis of C6-substituted dipeptide mimetics from 9 and 10 using Suzuki coupling as the key reaction has also been performed.

Abstract
Azabicyclo[4.3.0]- and [5.3.0]alkanone amino acid derivatives were easily prepared by submitting the same starting dipeptide to a direct ring-closing enyne metathesis or an ethylene-mediated cross-enyne metathesis/ring-closing metathesis, respectively. The reactivity of the newly synthesized 6,5- and 7,5-fused bicyclic scaffolds was then investigated to obtain variously functionalized derivatives with potential applications in the field of peptides/peptidomimetics.

Abstract
The 5/7-, 5/8- and 5/9-bicyclic lactams 3, 17, 5 and 6 have been synthesised as single diastereoisomers by a route involving ring closing olefin metathesis. The X-ray crystal structure of the amino acid hydrochloride has been carried out and compared to that of the saturated external beta-turn constraint 18.

Abstract
Bicyclic lactams derived from pyroglutamic acid provide a useful scaffold for synthesis of conformationally restricted analogues of lysine, ornithine and glutamine, as well as an Ala-Ala dipeptide analogue. Amino alcohol and carboxylic acid derivatives are accessible from a common intermediate. In this strategy, the bicyclic lactam system not only controls, but also facilitates the determination of the stereochemistry of the synthetic intermediates.
