Abstract
Enantiomers of a series of tripeptide derivatives with three stereogenic centers (±)-G1-G9 have been prepared from d- and l-α-amino acids as guests for chiral recognition by 1H NMR spectroscopy. In the meantime, a family of tetraaza macrocyclic chiral solvating agents (TAMCSAs) 1a-1d has been synthesized from d-phenylalanine and (1 S,2 S)-(+)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane. Discrimination of enantiomers of (±)-G1-G9 was carried out in the presence of TAMCSAs 1a-1d by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results indicate that enantiomers of (±)-G1-G9 can be effectively discriminated in the presence of TAMCSAs 1a-1d by 1H NMR signals of multiple protons exhibiting nonequivalent chemical shifts (ΔΔδ) up to 0.616 ppm. Furthermore, enantiomers of (±)-G1-G9 were easily assigned by comparing 1H NMR signals of the split corresponding protons with those attributed to a single enantiomer. Different optical purities (ee up to 90%) of G1 were clearly observed and calculated in the presence of TAMCSAs 1a-1d, respectively. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions were demonstrated through theoretical calculations of enantiomers of (±)-G1 with TAMCSA 1a by means of the hybrid functional theory with the standard basis sets of 3-21G of the Gaussian 03 program.

Abstract
We present an operationally simple approach to 2,2'-bipyridine macrocycles. Our method uses simple starting materials to produce these previously hard to access rotaxane precursors in remarkable yields (typically >65%) across a range of scales (0.1-5 mmol). All of the macrocycles reported are efficiently converted (>90%) to rotaxanes under AT-CuAAC conditions. With the requisite macrocycles finally available in sufficient quantities, we further demonstrate their long term utility through the first gram-scale synthesis of an AT-CuAAC [2]rotaxane and extend this powerful methodology to produce novel Sauvage-type molecular shuttles.

Abstract
Pseudopeptidic receptors containing an acridine unit have been prepared and their fluorescence response to a series of amino acids was measured in water. Free amino acids, not protected either at the C or the N terminus, were used for this purpose. The prepared receptors display a selective response to tryptophan (Trp) versus the other assayed amino acids under acidic conditions. The macrocyclic nature of the receptor is important as the fluorescence quenching is higher for the macrocyclic compound than for the related open-chain receptor. Notably, under the experimental acidic conditions used, both the receptor and guest are fully protonated and positively charged; thus, the experimental results suggest the formation of supramolecular species that contain two positively charged organic molecular components in proximity stabilized through aromatic-aromatic interactions and a complex set of cation-anion-cation interactions. The selectivity towards Trp seems to be based on the existence of a strong association between the indole ring of the monocharged amino acid and the acridinium fragment of the triprotonated form of the receptor, which is established to be assisted by the interaction of the cationic moieties with hydrogen sulfate anions.

Abstract
The Rhodamine derivatized probe 2 selectively coordinates with Hg(ii) ions to exhibit dual mode “turn-on” signaling, subsequently ‘turned-off’ with addition of l-proline, specific among various amino acids due to its favorable coordination environment.

Abstract
Ammonium ions are ubiquitous in chemistry and molecular biology. Considerable efforts have been undertaken to develop synthetic receptors for their selective molecular recognition. The type of host compounds for organic ammonium ion binding span a wide range from crown ethers to calixarenes to metal complexes. Typical intermolecular interactions are hydrogen bonds, electrostatic and cation-π interactions, hydrophobic interactions or reversible covalent bond formation. In this review we discuss the different classes of synthetic receptors for organic ammonium ion recognition and illustrate the scope and limitations of each class with selected examples from the recent literature. The molecular recognition of ammonium ions in amino acids is included and the enantioselective binding of chiral ammonium ions by synthetic receptors is also covered. In our conclusion we compare the strengths and weaknesses of the different types of ammonium ion receptors which may help to select the best approach for specific applications.
