Abstract
Pd-catalyzed annulative couplings of 2-alkenylanilines with aldehydes using alcohols as both the solvent and hydrogen source have been developed. These domino processes allow divergent syntheses of two significant N-heterocycles, indoles and quinolines, from the same substrate by tuning reaction parameters, which seems to invoke two distinct mechanisms. The nature of the ligand and alcoholic solvent had a profound influence on the selectivity and efficiency of these protocols. Particularly noteworthy is that indole formation was achieved by overcoming two significant challenges, regioselective hydropalladation of alkenes and subsequent reactions between the resulting Csp3-Pd species and less reactive imines.

Abstract
Tolnaftate, a classic antifungal compound, has been found to crystallize from 1:1 (v/v) acetone-water as large flat colorless needles in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P21/c. These crystals contain a 50:50 mixture of the (+ap,-sp,+ac,-ac) and (-ap,+sp,-ac,+ac) conformers. The bond lengths in the central CNOS unit are 1.3444 (19), 1.3556 (18) and 1.6567 (15) Å for C-N, C-O and C-S, respectively, and the CNOS and C3N moieties are flat and nearly coplanar with each other, consistent with the C-N bond possessing partial double-bond character. Tolnaftate and the four most closely related N,N-disubstituted thiocarbamates in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) all exist as E-conformational isomers in the solid state. Among these five compounds, tolnaftate is the only one in which the N-tolyl moiety is positioned trans to the S atom, i.e. the N-aryl substituent in each of the other compounds is positioned cis to their respective S atom. Notably, and more importantly, our experimental X-ray structure is unlike all prior theoretical models available for tolnaftate. The implication, either directly or indirectly, is that some of those theoretical models used in earlier studies to explain the spectroscopic properties of tolnaftate and to suggest which protein-ligand interactions are responsible for the binding of tolnaftate to squalene epoxidase are either inappropriate or structurally unreasonable, i.e. the results and conclusions from those prior studies are in need of critical reassessment.

Abstract
We report herein the AgNO2/Pd(PPh3)4-promoted regiocontrolled o-nitration of α-sulfonylmethylstyrenes in MeNO2 with good yields. The o-nitration process provides a series of sulfonyl o-nitrostyrenes. Substituted α-sulfonylmethylstyrenes were synthesized from ZnI2-mediated sulfonylation of substituted α-methylstyrenes and sodium sulfinates (RSO2Na) in MeCN with good to excellent yields. The structures of the key products were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A plausible mechanism has been proposed herein.

Abstract
S-(1-Oxido-2-pyridinyl)-1,1,3,3-tetramethylthiouronium hexafluorophosphate (HOTT) facilitates the first examples of efficient radical cyclisation with (hetero)aromatic substitution via Barton ester intermediates. Cyclopropyl and alkyl radicals allow access to five, six and seven-membered alicyclic-ring fused heterocycles with and without an additional fused cyclopropane, including the skeleton of the anti-cancer agent, cyclopropamitosene, expanded, and diazole analogues. Radical initiators are not required for cyclisation from carboxylic acid precursors.

Abstract
Bu(3)SnH/1,1'-azobis(cyclohexanecarbonitrile) (ACN)-mediated five, six, and seven-membered double alkyl radical cyclizations onto imidazo[5,4-f]benzimidazole and imidazo[4,5-f]benzimidazole are described. The quinone derivatives evaluated show selective toxicity towards human cervical (HeLa) and prostate (DU145) cancer cell lines (with negligible toxicity towards a normal human cell line, GM00637). Only the Fremy oxidation of the 6-aminoimidazo[5,4-f]benzimidazole gave iminoquinone, which showed high specificity towards the prostate cancer cell line (DU145).

Abstract
Catalyzed by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), domino ring-opening/redox amidation/cyclization reactions of the readily available formylcyclopropane 1,1-diesters with 2-chloro-1H-indole-3-carboaldehydes were reported. This methodology provides an efficient and direct construction of a 6-5-6 tricyclic hydropyrido[1,2-a]indole skeleton, which can be potentially applied for the synthesis of several types of polycyclic indole alkaloids.

Abstract
A series of N-alkoxybenziminoyl chlorides were synthesized and reacted with tributyltin hydride in the presence of AIBN to generate the corresponding N-alkoxybenziminoyl radicals. This methodology successfully generates the desired radicals, which undergo a rapid and highly efficient beta-scission reaction, as shown by the formation of the corresponding nitriles and products derived from alkoxy radicals. The intermediate N-alkoxybenziminoyl radical could not be trapped by employing high concentrations of Bu(3)SnH or by using a hydrogen atom donating solvent such as toluene. The fast beta-scission reaction was found to be independent of the structure of the iminoyl chloride. These results are different from studies on the similar N-alkyliminoyl radicals, which typically give products from both beta-scission hydrogen atom transfer pathways. Using the data from this study as well as some reported rate constants for different hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) processes, we conclude that the lower limit for the rate constant for the beta-scission process (k(beta)) in N-alkoxybenziminoyl radicals is 2.5 x 10(7) s(-1).

Abstract
A dicyclohexyl(2-sulfo-9-(3-(4-sulfophenyl)propyl)-9H-fluoren-9-yl)phosphonium salt was synthesized in 64% overall yield in three steps from simple commercially available starting materials. The highly water-soluble catalyst obtained from the corresponding phosphine and [Na(2)PdCl(4)] enabled the Suzuki coupling of a broad variety of N- and S-heterocyclic substrates. Chloropyridines (-quinolines) and aryl chlorides were coupled with aryl-, pyridine- or indoleboronic acids in quantitative yields in water/n-butanol solvent mixtures in the presence of 0.005-0.05 mol % of Pd catalyst at 100 degrees C, chloropurines were quantitatively Suzuki coupled in the presence of 0.5 mol % of catalyst, and S-heterocyclic aryl chlorides and aryl- or 3-pyridylboronic acids required 0.01-0.05 mol % Pd catalyst for full conversion. The key to the high activity of the Pd-phosphine catalyst is the rational design of the reaction parameters (i.e., the presence of water in the reaction mixture, good solubility of reactants and catalyst in n-butanol/water (3:1), and the electron-rich and sterically demanding nature of the phosphine ligand).
