Toxicity of Varronia curassavica Jacq. Essential Oil to Two Arthropod Pests and Their Natural Enemy

This study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of the Varronia curassavica Jacq. essential oil to two cosmopolitan and polyphagous pest species, the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) and the green aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer). Additionally, we tested the essential oil toxicity to a generalist predatory insect, the green lacewing Ceraeochrysa cubana Hagen. The treatments consisted of four essential oil concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0%) and one control (Tween® 80 + water). At 0.75% concentration, the V. curassavica essential oil caused the highest mortalities for both pests. The concentration of 1.0% of the essential oil interfered mainly in the rates of oviposition and egg hatching and caused a decrease in the instantaneous population growth rate (r_i) of T. urticae. Survival of the C. cubana was not affected by the highest tested concentration of the essential oil (1%). Tested concentrations V. curassavica essential oil were toxic to T. urticae and M. persicae, but not to the predator C. cubana.

Diterpenoids with Aromatase Inhibitory Activity from the Rhizomes of Kaempferia elegans

Investigation of bioactive compounds from the rhizomes of Kaempferia elegans led to the isolation and characterization of ten new diterpenoids, namely, five 12,13-seco-diterpenoids named elegansins A-E (1-5) and five new abietanes, elegansols A-E (6-10), together with seven known diterpenoids (11-17). The structure elucidation of the new compounds was achieved by HRESIMS, NMR, and ECD spectroscopic analysis. Compounds (1-5) are the first examples of 12,13-seco-diterpenoid-type compounds representing a decalin fused dihydropyran skeleton. Plausible biosynthetic pathways for compounds 1-5 are proposed. Aromatase inhibitory activities of all compounds were evaluated, and abieta-8,11,13-trien-11-ol (16) was found to be the most potent aromatase inhibitor with an IC₅₀ value of 3.7 μM.

ent-Rosane and abietane diterpenoids as cancer chemopreventive agents

Two ent-rosane- (cuzcol, 1 and 6-dehydroxycuzcol, 2) and a abietatriene- (salvadoriol, 3) type diterpenoids have been isolated from Maytenus cuzcoina and Crossopetalum uragoga, respectively, along with five known diterpene compounds (4-8). Their stereostructures have been elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR techniques, and computational data. The absolute configuration of cuzcol was determined by application of Riguera ester procedure. This is the first instance of isolation of ent-rosane diterpenoids from species of the Celastraceae. The isolated diterpenes were found to be potent anti-tumour-promoter agents, and carnosol (7) also showed a remarkable chemopreventive effect in an in vivo two-stage carcinogenesis model.

Cyclic nitriles: stereodivergent addition-alkylation-cyclization to cis- and trans-abietanes

Diverse cyclic hydroxy nitriles are readily synthesized through sequential 1,2-1,4-Grignard addition-methylations to 3-oxo-1-cyclohexene-1-carbonitrile. Acid-catalyzed intramolecular cyclizations of the cyclic hydroxy nitriles reveal fundamental stereoselectivity trends in Friedel-Crafts cyclizations to cis- and trans-abietanes. In contrast to previous assumptions, comparative cationic cyclizations with electron-rich and electron-poor aromatic nucleophiles exhibit similar preferences for cyclization to cis-abietanes. Optimizing the cyclizations for trans-abietanes has identified ZrCl 4 as an exceptional Lewis acid which, for cyclizations of iminolactones, favors trans-abietanes as the only observable diastereomer. The sequential oxonitrile addition-Friedel-Crafts cyclization strategy provides a rapid, stereodivergent synthesis of cis- or trans-abietanes, demonstrates the dramatic influence of ZrCl 4 in promoting cationic cyclizations, and in contrast to previous assumptions suggests that the cyclization stereoselectivity is not correlated with the electronic nature of the aromatic nucleus.
