Abstract
Four A-π-D-π-A type small organic molecules with 1,8-naphthalimide motifs were successfully synthesised. The designed compounds are built of two 1,8-naphthalimide units linked via ethynyl π-linkages with selected functionalised donor motifs i. e. 2,2'-bithiophene, fluorene, phenothiazine and carbazole derivative. The synthesis based on Sonogashira cross-coupling allowed us to obtain the presented dyes with good yields. The resulting symmetrical small molecules' optical, electrochemical and thermal properties were thoroughly investigated, and their potential applicability for the OLED devices was demonstrated. In addition, the relationship between molecular structure and properties was considered by employing experimental and theoretical studies. As a result of using various donor groups, it was possible to achieve efficient electroluminescence in the range from green (DEV4) to orange-red light (DEV3) with a maximum luminance of 3 820 cd/m2 for DEV4. Upon the insertion of an acetylene linker to the designed molecules, the free rotation of D and A fragments, and hence the effective π-electron communication within the entire molecule, is possible, which was confirmed by DFT studies. The obtained dyes are characterised by high thermal stability, reversible oxidation-reduction process, satisfactory optoelectronic properties and good solubility in organic solvents, which is advisable for the application in small molecular organic light-emitting diodes (SM-OLEDs) technology.

Abstract
Three examples of 9-bromo-10-(alkylidynyl)anthracenes, [W{CC(C6H4)2CBr}(CO)2(L)] (L = hydrotris(dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate Tp*, hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate Tp, hydrotris(2-mercapto-N-methylimidazol-1-yl)borate Tm) were prepared via modified Fischer-Mayr acyl oxide-abstraction protocols. With a sufficiently bulky ancillary ligand (L = Tp*) the aryl bromide is ammenable to cross-coupling reactions that enable more elaborate derivatives to be prepared. These including symmetric bis(alkylidynyl)anthracenes as well as non-palindromic examples bearing disparate metals and/or co-ligands. In contrast, these couplings fail for smaller ligands (L = Tp, Tm) where it was found that Pd0 or Pt0 were instead able to coordinate across two WC bonds to give trimetallic bow-tie complexes, [W2M{μ-CC(C6H4)2CBr}2(CO)4(L)2] (M = Pd, Pt; L = Tp, Tm).

Abstract
α,ω-Bis(1,8-dichloroanthracen-10-yl)alkanes with (CH2) n -linker units (n=1-4) were synthesized starting from 1,8-dichloroanthracen-10(9H)-one. This was transformed into anthracenes with allyl, bromomethyl and propargyl substituents in position 10; these were converted in various C-C-bond formation reactions (plus hydrogenation), leading to two anthracene units flexibly linked by α,ω-alkandiyl groups. 1,2-Ethandiyl- and 1,3-propandiyl-linked derivatives were functionalized with ethynyl groups in positions 1, 8, 1' and 8', and these terminally functionalized by Me3Sn groups using Me2NSnMe3. All linked bisanthracenes were subjected to UV light induced cyclomerization and a series of 9,10 : 9',10'-photo-cyclomers were obtained. Their thermal cycloreversion and (repeated) switchability was demonstrated. 1,3-Bis{1,8-bis[(trimethylstannyl)ethynyl]anthracen-10-yl}propane served as model compound for photo-switchable acceptor molecules and its open and closed forms were characterized by NMR and DOSY experiments.

Abstract
Benzodifuran-functionalised pyrene and anthracene fluorophores 1 and 2 were obtained in reasonable yields. Their single crystal structures, electrochemical, optical absorption, and fluorescence characteristics have been described. They show strong luminescence with high quantum yields of 0.53 for 1 and 0.48 for 2.

One important access to monodisperse (functionalized) oligoPPEs is based on the orthogonality of the alkyne protecting groups triisopropylsilyl and hydroxymethyl (HOM) and on the polar tagging with the hydroxymethyl moiety for an easy chromatographic separation of the products. This paper provides an update of this synthetic route. For the deprotection of HOM protected alkynes, γ-MnO₂ proved to be better than (highly) activated MnO₂. The use of HOM as an alkyne protecting group is accompanied by carbometalation as a side reaction in the alkynyl-aryl coupling. The extent of carbometalation can be distinctly reduced through substitution of HOM for 1-hydroxyethyl. The strategy of polar tagging is extended by embedding ether linkages within the solubilising side chains. With building blocks such as 1,4-diiodo-2,5-bis(6-methoxyhexyl) less steps are needed to assemble oligoPPEs with functional end groups and the isolation of pure compounds becomes simple. For the preparation of 1,4-dialkyl-2,5-diiodobenzene a better procedure is presented together with the finding that 1,4-dialkyl-2,3-diiodobenzene, a constitutional isomer of 1,4-dialkyl-2,5-diiodobenzene, is one of the byproducts.
