Abstract
A concise strategy to prepare polycyclic heteroaromatics involving a deaminative contraction cascade is detailed. The efficient deaminative ring contraction involves the in situ methylation of a biaryl-linked dihydroazepine to form a cyclic ammonium cation that undergoes a base-induced [1,2]-Stevens rearrangement/dehydroamination sequence. The presence of pseudosymmetry guides the retrosynthetic analysis of pyridyl-containing polycyclic heteroaromatics, enabling their construction by the reductive cyclization and deaminative contraction of tertiary amine precursors.

Abstract
The development of lanthanide-based luminescent probes with a long emission lifetime has the potential to revolutionize imaging-based diagnostic techniques. By a rational design strategy taking advantage of computational predictions, a novel, water-soluble Eu3+ complex from a cyclen-based ligand bearing 1,3-disubstituted benzo[h]isoquinoline arms was realized. The ligand has been obtained overcoming the lack of reactivity of position 3 of the isoquinoline moiety. Notably, steric hindrance of the heteroaromatic chromophore allowed selective and stoichiometry-controlled insertion of two or three antennas on the cyclen platform without any protection strategy. The complex bears a fourth heptanoic arm for easy conjugation to biomolecules. This new chromophore allowed the sensitization of the metal center either with one or two photons excitation. The suitability as a luminescent bioprobe was validated by imaging BMI1 oncomarker in lung carcinoma cells following an established immunofluorescence approach. The use of a conventional epifluorescence microscope equipped with a linear structured illumination module disclosed a simple and inexpensive way to image confocally Ln-bioprobes by single photon excitation in the 350–400 nm window, where ordinary confocal systems have no excitation sources.

Abstract
AbstractIn this chapter mono, di, tri and tetraaza substituted phenanthrene derivatives have been investigated computationally with B3LYP/6-31 + G(d,p) level of theory. Substitution of carbon atom of the main structure with nitrogen obviously disturbs the aromaticity, indeed it decreases it. Thus, the idea of regaining of the aromaticity back by using electron withdrawing groups came across. As a result of the computational calculations, energetically most unfavored structures have been found to be those where aza substitutiona are vicinal. Secondly, the aromaticities of the present species depend on the position of the centric substituent. In addition, the effect position of the side substituent has been considered. The system becomes more aromatic (possess greater negative NICS values or smaller HOMA value) when the electron withdrawing atoms or groups are adjacent to the centrically substituted heteroatoms.

Abstract
Sodium diisopropylamide in tetrahydrofuran is an effective base for the metalation of 1,4-dienes and isomerization of alkenes. Dienes metalate via tetrasolvated sodium amide monomers, whereas 1-pentene is isomerized by trisolvated monomers. Facile, highly Z-selective isomerizations are observed for allyl ethers under conditions that compare favorably to those of existing protocols. The selectivity is independent of the substituents on the allyl ethers; rate and computational data show that the rates, mechanisms, and roles of sodium-oxygen contacts are substituent-dependent. The competing influences of substrate coordination and solvent coordination to sodium are discussed.

Abstract
The solution structures, stabilities, physical properties, and reactivities of sodium diisopropylamide (NaDA) in a variety of coordinating solvents are described. NaDA is stable for months as a solid or as a 1.0 M solution in N,N-dimethylethylamine (DMEA) at -20 °C. A combination of NMR spectroscopic and computational studies show that NaDA is a disolvated symmetric dimer in DMEA, N,N-dimethyl-n-butylamine, and N-methylpyrrolidine. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) readily displaces DMEA, affording a tetrasolvated cyclic dimer at all THF concentrations. Dimethoxyethane (DME) and N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine quantitatively displace DMEA, affording doubly chelated symmetric dimers. The trifunctional ligands N,N,N',N″,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine and diglyme bind the dimer as bidentate rather than tridentate ligands. Relative rates of solvent decompositions are reported, and rate studies for the decomposition of THF and DME are consistent with monomer-based mechanisms.

Abstract
An aerobic oxidative aromatization of simple aliphatic alcohols and anilines under the Pd(OAc)2/2,4,6-Collidine/Brønsted acid catalytic system has been established, providing a direct approach for the preparation of diverse substituted quinoline derivatives in high yields with wide functional group tolerance. Practically, the protocol can be easily scaled up to gram-scale and was utilized in the concise formal synthesis of a promising herbicide candidate.

Abstract
The reactivities and chemoselectivities of sodium diisopropylamide (NaDA) in N,N-dimethylethylamine (DMEA) are compared with those of lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). Metalations of arenes, epoxides, ketones, hydrazones, dienes, and alkyl and vinyl halides are represented. The positive attributes of NaDA-DMEA include high solubility, stability, resistance to solvent decomposition, and ease of preparation. The high reactivities and chemoselectivities often complement those of LDA-THF.

Abstract
Organobismuthines are an attractive class of organometallic reagents that can be accessed from inexpensive and nontoxic bismuth salts. Triarylbismuthines are particularly interesting due to their air and moisture stability and high functional group tolerance. We report herein a detailed study on the preparation of highly functionalized triarylbismuth reagents by triple functional group manipulation and their use in palladium- and copper-catalyzed C-, N-, and O-arylation reactions.

Abstract
Polyhalogenated 4,4'-bipyridines were conveniently synthesized in a single step starting from dihalopyridines. A mechanism was proposed on the basis of experiments performed with 2-chloro-5-bromopyridine 1a. 2-Chloro-4-lithio-5-bromopyridine A1 was produced via ortholithiation of 1a by using either LDA or t-BuLi bases. When LDA was used, dimer 3a containing two chlorines and two bromine atoms was formed predominantly accompanied by several byproducts whose structure and mechanism of formation are discussed. In the case of t-BuLi, although the major product was 2-chloropyridine 7, a new pyridone product 8 was formed that is probably the result of the dihydropyridine intermediate hydrolysis. The dimerization procedure involving LDA was employed to prepare a large number of halogenated 4,4'-bipyridines in moderate to good yields. In some specific cases, halogenated 3,4' and 2,4'-bipyridines were obtained in lower yields and their structures were unambiguously assigned by X-ray diffraction analysis.
