Abstract
This work explores the position of the hydroxyl moiety and its participation in intramolecular H-bonding towards dictating the fluoride selective colorimetric response in functionalized thiourea derivatives. The study reveals the pivotal aspect of the hydroxyl moiety in C2 towards attaining selectivity for fluoride over acetate and dihydrogenphosphate ion. Furthermore, a methodology employing stabilization of deprotonated thiourea through metal ion (Ni2+ and Cu2+) coordination is proposed for the colorimetric sensing of fluoride in water medium. The mechanism of interaction is thoroughly studied by UV-Vis, 1H NMR, ESR spectroscopy, electrochemical techniques and further validated by DFT calculations. This study reveals the formation of an in situ Ni2+ complex that shows greater stability in aqueous medium. The methodology is applied in the detection of fluoride in groundwater samples.

Abstract
Six ferrocenyl imidazole derivatives substituted with -Cl, -NO2 and -CH3 on the 2-position of the 1H-imidazole ring have been synthesized. Of the six compounds, the di-substituted ferrocenes, i.e. compounds 4 (1,1′-ferrocenylmethyl(2-chloroimidazole)), 5 (1,1′-ferrocenyl(2-nitroimidazole)), and 6 (1,1′-ferrocenylmethyl(2-methylimidazole)) are reported for the first time. The structure-property relationships of compounds 4, 5 and 6 were investigated by means of UV-visible, FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR spectroscopy and electrochemical studies. UV-visible analysis in acetonitrile showed that the π -π* band of compounds 2 (1-ferrocenylmethyl(2-nitroimidazole)) and 5 appeared at longer wavelength compared to 1 (1-ferrocenylmethyl(2-chloroimidazole)), 3 (1-ferrocenylmethyl(2-methylimidazole)), 4 and 6. This phenomenon is due to the different electronics around the imidazole moieties. In cyclic voltammetry analysis, all compounds exhibited a quasi-reversible redox wave for the ferrocenyl and imidazole moieties. Density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations with the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) basis set were performed on compounds 1–6, and the calculated HUMO-LUMO band gap energies correlated with those obtained from electrochemical and spectroscopic data. The X-ray crystallographic analysis highlighted the effect of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents on the conformation of the cyclopentadienyl rings attached to the ferrocenyl moiety.

Abstract
Two macrocyclic bis-benzimidazolium salts 2 and 4 (23-membered for 2 and 25-membered for 4) were prepared, and their structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The research of anion recognitions using 2 or 4 as hosts were carried out with the methods of fluorescence and ultraviolet spectroscopy, 1H NMR titrations, MS and IR spectra. The experiment results show that 2 can detect acetate anion and 4 can detect nitrate anion with favorable selectivity and sensitivity.

Abstract
Five ferrocene alkymethylimidazolium cations 1a⁻1d and 2 with different alkyl spacer lengths were reinvestigated using voltammetry and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The voltammetric responses of ligand 2 toward various anions are described in detail. An interesting and unprecedented finding from both experimental and theoretical studies is that coupled electron and intramolecular anion (F-) transfer may be present in these molecules. In addition, it was also observed that, in these studied molecules, the electrostatic attraction interaction toward F- would effectively vanish beyond 1 nm, which was previously reported only for cations.

Abstract
In the present work, the synthesis, characterization (FT-IR, multinuclear (1H and 13C) NMR, AAS, Raman, and elemental analyses), DNA binding (cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis spectroscopy), and in vitro biological screening of nine new ferrocene-incorporated thioureas (A1-A9) are reported. Furthermore, the single-crystal X-ray structure of compound A8 was also determined. The ferrocene-based N,N'-disubstituted thioureas were derived by allowing the ferrocenyl anilines to react with freshly prepared isothiocyanates under a N2 atmosphere in dry acetone. The DNA binding studies performed by cyclic voltammetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy produced results that are in close agreement with one another for the binding constants (K) and an electrostatic mode of interaction was observed. The DFT/B3LYP method was used to determine the charge distribution and HOMO/LUMO energies of the optimized structure. The DFT calculated HOMO and LUMO energies correlate well with the experimentally determined redox potential values. The synthesized ferrocenyl thioureas exhibited good scavenging activity against the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). These complexes were also scanned for their in vitro cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 carcinoma cells, and also towards the non-cancerous cell line MCF-10A. The results showed modest cytotoxicity against the subjected cancer cell line compared with a standard chemotherapeutic drug (cisplatin). However, these ferrocenyl derivatives have fewer toxic effects in normal cells.

Abstract
Several acylthioureas have been synthesized to develop colorimetric sensors for detection of biologically important anions. UV-vis titration experiments indicated that the absorbance values have a good linear relationship with concentration of anions when the anions were added in AR-1, AR-4 and AR-6 sensor molecules. The detection limit to AcO(-) and F(-) is 5×10(-6) mol/L when the concentration of receptors are 2×10(-5) mol/L. Especially, compounds AR-1 and AR-4, decorated with strong electron-withdrawing NO2 substituent, showed augmented anion sensing properties, being capable of naked-eye detecting of F(-) and AcO(-) when the water content is lower than 15%. The recognition details of anion sensing were also assessed using (1)H NMR technique and confirmed that the basic anions induced deprotonation of N-H.

Abstract
A novel tetra-substituted guanidine, N-isopropyl-N-(4-ferrocenylphenyl)-N'-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N″-benzoylguanidine (1), [(CH3)2CH)(C5H5FeC5H4C6H4)NC(NHCOC6H5)(NHC6H3(CH2CH3)2] has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, multinuclear ((1)H, (13)C) NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-rays diffraction analysis and density functional theory based quantum chemical calculations. The torsion angles indicating that the guanidine moiety and carbonyl group are almost co-planar, due to the pseudo hexagonal ring formed by intramolecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The DNA interaction studies performed by cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectroscopy are in close agreement with the binding constants (K) 1.4×10(4) and 1.2×10(4) respectively. The shift in peak potential, current and absorption maxima of the studied ferrocenyl guanidine in the presence of DNA discovered that CV coupled with UV-vis spectroscopy could provide an opportunity to elaborate DNA interaction mechanism, a prerequisite for the design of new drug like agents and understanding the molecular basis of their action. The synthesized compound (1) has also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal.

Abstract
Structural characterization of the phosphate complex with a thiophene-based macrocycle suggests that two dihydrogen phosphates in a dimeric form are encapsulated in the cavity via several hydrogen bonds from NH···O and CH···O interactions. In the lattice framework, the two dimers are linearly hydrogen-bonded to form a tetramer. 1H NMR titrations suggest that the host forms a 1:1 complex with phosphate, showing an association constant of 120 M-1 in D2O at pH = 5.5. The host guest complexation was further confirmed by ESI-MS in a gas phase.

Abstract
The coordinatively unsaturated 12-electron complex dichloro t-butylimido bispyridine titanium(IV) (2a) has been shown to react with CO(2) to give N,N-bis-t-butyl urea. Two analogous sterically hindered coordinatively saturated 14-electron complexes dichloro t-butylimido trispyridine titanium(IV) (10a) and dichloro 2,6-(i-Pr)(2)phenylimido trispyridine titanium(IV) (10b) also gave their corresponding symmetrical ureas upon treatment with CO(2). Further experiments support the intermediary of metallocycles formed from heterocumulene metathesis reactions. The unsymmetrical urea N-benzyl, N-t-butyl urea (11) was produced from treatment of 2,6-(i-Pr)(2)phenylimido trispyridine titanium(IV) (10b) with CO(2) and interception with BnNH(2). Equimolar quantities of N,N-bistrimethylsilybenzylamine or N,N-bistrimethylsilyphenethylamine were shown to promote the reaction between t-butylimido bispyridine titanium(IV) (2a) and CO(2) to give near quantitative yields of symmetrical urea. Other symmetrical ureas could be produced from TiCl(4), amine and CO(2) in moderate to quantitative yields depending on the stoichiometry of amine present.

Abstract
A macrocyclic dinuclear copper complex, [Cu(2)(II)(1)Br(3)(H(2)O)]Br, has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, in which the macrocycle is folded to form a bowl-shaped cavity. The sensing ability of the receptor has been studied for halides by UV-vis spectroscopy in water-acetonitrile (1:3, v/v) and water. The results indicate that the new receptor exhibits a strong affinity and selectivity for iodide.

Abstract
A macrocyclic dinuclear copper complex, [Cu(2) (II)(1)Br(4)]·2H(2)O has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, in which each metal ion is pentacoordinated in a square pyramidal environment and the macrocycle is folded to form a boat-shaped empty cavity. As studied by an indicator displacement assay, the dinuclear complex shows strong selectivity for phosphate over sulfate, nitrate, perchlorate and halides in water at physiological pH.

Abstract
The title compound, C18H30N4O2, contains two tert-butyl urea groups, each connected to a benzene ring though a methylene group. One of the groups occupies a position almost normal to the aromatic plane with a C—N—C—C torsion angle of −94.4 (4)°, while the other is considerably twisted from the ring with a C—N—C—C torsion angle of −136.1 (4)°. In the crystal, pairs of molecules are connected to each other, forming centrosymmetric dimers in which two NH groups of one molecule act as hydrogen-bond donors to one carbonyl O atom of the other molecule. The dimers are linked into sheets parallel to (100) by N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving the remaining N—H and C=O groups.
