This approach exhibits significant utility due to its outstanding efficiency of conversion in the synthesis of secondary amines as a one-pot reaction. The initial step of the method involves a cyclization reaction for the production of pyridinium salts, followed by the next stage, where rearrangement is accomplished through the nucleophilic addition phenomenon. This approach provides the conversion of primary amines into secondary amines, resulting in a single product. Furthermore, the methodology presents a high degree of tolerance towards several pyridine and aniline derivatives, resulting in the formation of products with excellent yields.

Exploration of an epoxidation-ring-opening strategy for the synthesis of lyconadin A and discovery of an unexpected Payne rearrangement

In the context of synthetic efforts targeting the alkaloid lyconadin A, scalemic epoxide 25 was prepared by a highly stereoselective sequence involving a Myers alkylation and a Shi epoxidation. Ring-opening of this epoxide with a vinylcopper complex afforded alcohol 26 instead of the expected product 27. An unusual Lewis acid promoted Payne rearrangement of an α-trityloxy epoxide is proposed to account for this outcome.

A method for the reductive scission of heterocyclic thioethers

A mild, chemoselective, and generally high-yielding method for the reductive scission of heterocyclic thioethers is described. Suitable heterocycles have a thioether substituent at the 2-position relative to a ring heteroatom. The convenient and straightforward method is demonstrated with reactants which are not compatible with the standard Raney nickel conditions such as sulfides, sulfones, and thiophenes. In addition, benzyl esters, benzyl amides, and benzyl carbamates are tolerated by the reductive reaction conditions.
