Abstract
This review summarizes the structural and synthetic aspects of heterocyclic molecules incorporating an atom of a hypervalent main-group element. The term "hypervalent" has been suggested for derivatives of main-group elements with more than eight valence electrons, and the concept of hypervalency is commonly used despite some criticism from theoretical chemists. The significantly higher thermal stability of hypervalent heterocycles compared to their acyclic analogs adds special features to their chemistry, particularly for bromine and iodine. Heterocyclic compounds of elements with double bonds are not categorized as hypervalent molecules owing to the zwitterionic nature of these bonds, resulting in the conventional 8-electron species. This review is focused on hypervalent heterocyclic derivatives of nonmetal main-group elements, such as boron, silicon, nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, selenium, bromine, chlorine, iodine(III) and iodine(V).

Abstract
One of the most useful transformations in the synthetic chemist arsenal is the oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl congeners. Despite its seemingly straightforward nature, this transformative reaction predominantly relies on the use of metals or hazardous reagents, making these processes highly unsustainable. To address this challenge, we have developed a sustainable metal-free method for the oxidation of alcohols in continuous flow. Using a solid phase hypervalent iodine catalyst and nBu4HSO5 as a phase transfer catalyst and co-oxidant, primary and secondary alcohols were selectively oxidized to the corresponding carbonyl motifs. This operationally simple continuous-flow set-up is highly robust (15 cycles run without significant catalyst leaching or loss of reaction efficiency), uses green solvents, such as acetonitrile or acetic acid, and is readily scalable.

Abstract
o-Iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) and Dess-Martin periodinane (DMP) are employed for thiol to thiosulfonate conversion at rt. DMP is better than IBX in terms of reaction rate, conversion, and required equivalents. IBX-mediated oxidation of benzyl thiols produced thiosulfonates, whereas DMP afforded O-benzyl esters. The one-pot conversion of a thiol to an ester is unprecedented; this atom-economic transformation has potential for functional group transformations (FGTs), e.g., an alcohol and an aldehyde are accessed from benzyl thiol.

Abstract
Monosaccharide derivatives having a double bond conjugated to a carbonyl (sugar enones or enuloses) are relevant synthetic tools. They are also suitable starting materials, or versatile intermediates, for the synthesis of a wide variety of natural or synthetic compounds with a broad spectrum of biological and pharmacological activities. The preparation of enones is mainly focused on the search for more efficient and diastereoselective synthetic methodologies. The usefulness of enuloses relies on the diverse reaction possibilities offered by alkene and carbonyl double bonds, which are prone to undergo varied reactions such as halogenation, nitration, epoxidation, reduction, addition, etc. The addition of thiol groups that led to sulfur glycomimetics, such as thiooligosaccharides, is particularly relevant. Therefore, the synthesis of enuloses and the Michael addition of sulfur nucleophiles to give thiosugars or thiodisaccharides are discussed here. Chemical modifications of the conjugate addition products to afford biologically active compounds are also reported.

Abstract
IBX is an oxidation reagent that has surged into prominence in the last two decades. It is cost-effective, environmentally benign and readily prepared from o-iodobenzoic acid. However, its insolubility in common organic solvents and explosive attributes upon impact and heating are debilitating disadvantages. Development of modified IBXs,i.e., mIBXs, that exhibit improved solubility and enhanced reactivity, and obviate explosive attributes by a judicious manipulation of the structure of IBX has been an incessant endeavor. In this account, common organic solvent-soluble modified o-iodoxybenzoic acids (mIBXs) developed in our research group are collated with discussion of rationale underlying the design principles. Steric build-up around the iodoxolone moiety that is responsible for strong intermolecular interactions within the crystal lattice of IBX constitutes the key consideration in the design and development of modified λ5-iodanes that are reactive and sparingly soluble in common organic solvents. In situ generation of mIBXs from precursor iodo-acids in the presence of Oxone® permits employment of the latter as organocatalysts for facile oxidative transformations. Reactive mIBXs generated in situ from precursor modified iodoacids (mIAs, I(I)) in the presence of Oxone® may constitute unrivaled prospects for cost-effective oxidations. Applications of mIBXs, generated in situ or otherwise, for efficient oxidations are consolidated.

Abstract
Hypervalent iodine (HVI) compounds are efficient reagents for the double oxidative dearomatization of electron-rich phenols to o-quinones. We recently reported that an underexplored class of iodine(V) reagents possessing bidentate bipyridine ligands, termed Bi(N)-HVIs, could dearomatize electron-poor phenols for the first time. To understand the fundamental mechanistic basis of this unique reactivity, density functional theory (DFT) was utilized. In this way, different pathways were explored to determine why Bi(N)-HVIs are capable of facilitating these challenging transformations while more traditional hypervalent species, such as 2-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX), cannot. Our calculations reveal that the first redox process is the rate-determining step, the barrier of which hinges on the identity of the ligands bound to the iodine(V) center. This crucial process is composed of three steps: (a) ligand exchange, (b) hypervalent twist, and (c) reductive elimination. We found that strong coordinating ligands disfavor these elementary steps, and, for this reason, HVIs bearing such ligands cannot oxidize the electron-poor phenols. In contrast, the weakly coordinating triflate ligands in Bi(N)-HVIs allow for the kinetically favorable oxidation. It was identified that trapping in situ-generated triflic acid is a key role played by the bidentate bipyridine ligands in Bi(N)-HVIs as this serves to minimize the decomposition of the ortho-quinone product.

Abstract
Hypervalent iodine(V) reagents are a powerful class of organic oxidants. While the use of I(V) compounds Dess-Martin periodinane and IBX is widespread, this reagent class has long been plagued by issues of solubility and stability. Extensive effort has been made for derivatizing these scaffolds to modulate reactivity and physical properties but considerable room for innovation still exists. Herein, we describe the preparation, thermal stability, optimized geometries, and synthetic utility of an emerging class of I(V) reagents, Bi(N)-HVIs, possessing datively bound bidentate nitrogen ligands on the iodine center. Bi(N)-HVIs display favorable safety profiles, improved solubility, and comparable to superior oxidative reactivity relative to common I(V) reagents. The highly modular synthesis and in situ generation of Bi(N)-HVIs provides a novel and convenient screening platform for I(V) reagent and reaction development.

Abstract
The development of an aqueous silver-sodium/alizarin red sensitised zinc oxide system has been reported to oxidise a range of both aromatic and aliphatic alcohols to aldehydes. Furthermore, photoluminescence spectroscopy validated the electron quenching effect of zinc oxide's defect sites after surface sensitising the metal-oxide with alizarin red. Powder diffuse reflectance UV/Vis data further substantiated the visible-light attenuated properties of alizarin red sensitised zinc oxide, and hence justification for its visible light reactivity towards alcohol oxidations. Lastly, density functional theory calculations supported the intermolecular photo-electronic transfer between alizarin red organic and zinc oxide.

Abstract
The selective preparation of 2-iodoxybenzenesulfonic acid (IBS, as potassium or sodium salts) by oxidation of sodium 2-iodobenzenesulfonate with Oxone or sodium periodate in water is reported. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a complex polymeric structure consisting of three units of IBS as potassium salt and one unit of 2-iodoxybenzenesulfonic acid linked together by relatively strong I=O···I intermolecular interactions. Furthermore, a new method for the preparation of the reduced form of IBS, 2-iodosylbenzenesulfonic acid, by using periodic acid as an oxidant, has been developed. It has been demonstrated that the oxidation of free 2-iodobenzenesulfonic acid under acidic conditions affords an iodine(III) heterocycle (2-iodosylbenzenesulfonic acid), while the oxidation of sodium 2-iodobenzenesulfonate in neutral aqueous solution gives the iodine(V) products.

Abstract
Hypervalent iodine(V) reagents, such as Dess-Martin periodinane (DMP) and 2-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX), are broadly useful oxidants in chemical synthesis. Development of strategies to generate these reagents from dioxygen (O2 ) would immediately enable use of O2 as a terminal oxidant in a broad array of substrate oxidation reactions. Recently we disclosed the aerobic synthesis of I(III) reagents by intercepting reactive oxidants generated during aldehyde autoxidation. In this work, aerobic oxidation of iodobenzenes is coupled with disproportionation of the initially generated I(III) compounds to generate I(V) reagents. The aerobically generated I(V) reagents exhibit substrate oxidation chemistry analogous to that of DMP. The developed aerobic generation of I(V) has enabled the first application of I(V) intermediates in aerobic oxidation catalysis.

Abstract
Different catechol and pyrogallol derivatives have been synthesized by oxidation of coumarins with 2-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) in DMSO at 25 °C. A high regioselectivity was observed in accordance with the stability order of the incipient carbocation or radical benzylic-like intermediate. The oxidation was also effective in water under heterogeneous conditions by using IBX supported on polystyrene. The new derivatives showed improved antioxidant effects in the DPPH test and inhibitory activity against the influenza A/PR8/H1N1 virus. These data represent a new entry for highly oxidized coumarins showing an antiviral activity possibly based on the control of the intracellular redox value.

Abstract
A mechanistic study of arylations of aliphatic alcohols and hydroxide with diaryliodonium salts, to give alkyl aryl ethers and diaryl ethers, has been performed using experimental techniques and DFT calculations. Aryne intermediates have been trapped, and additives to avoid by-product formation originating from arynes have been found. An alcohol oxidation pathway was observed in parallel to arylation; this is suggested to proceed by an intramolecular mechanism. Product formation pathways via ligand coupling and arynes have been compared, and 4-coordinated transition states were found to be favored in reactions with alcohols. Furthermore, a novel, direct nucleophilic substitution pathway has been identified in reactions with electron-deficient diaryliodonium salts.

Abstract
1,2-Naphthoquiones and their derivatives constitute an important category of compounds of relevance in pharmaceutical and material chemistry. It is shown that 1,2-naphthoquinones generated by o-iodoxybenzoic acid-mediated oxidation of 2-naphthols can be subjected to a cascade of reactions, namely oxidation, Michael addition, reduction, acetylation, and cyclocondensation, in the same pot to afford diverse 4-arylthio-1,2-naphthoquinones 2, 4-arylthio-1,2-diacetoxynaphthalenes 3, and 5-arylthio-/5-aminobenzo[a]phenazines 4 in very good isolated yields. The multistep single-pot synthesis occurs smoothly in DMF at rt.

Abstract
The preparation, structure, and chemistry of hypervalent iodine compounds are reviewed with emphasis on their synthetic application. Compounds of iodine possess reactivity similar to that of transition metals, but have the advantage of environmental sustainability and efficient utilization of natural resources. These compounds are widely used in organic synthesis as selective oxidants and environmentally friendly reagents. Synthetic uses of hypervalent iodine reagents in halogenation reactions, various oxidations, rearrangements, aminations, C-C bond-forming reactions, and transition metal-catalyzed reactions are summarized and discussed. Recent discovery of hypervalent catalytic systems and recyclable reagents, and the development of new enantioselective reactions using chiral hypervalent iodine compounds represent a particularly important achievement in the field of hypervalent iodine chemistry. One of the goals of this Review is to attract the attention of the scientific community as to the benefits of using hypervalent iodine compounds as an environmentally sustainable alternative to heavy metals.

Abstract
This review summarizes recent research on novel photochemical methods for the initiation and control of the polymerization of main chain fluorinated monomers as exemplified by vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and for the synthesis of their block copolymers. Such reactions can be carried out at ambient temperature in glass tubes using visible light. Novel, original protocols include the use of hypervalent iodide carboxylates alone or in conjunction with molecular iodine, as well as the use of photoactive transition metal carbonyls in the presence of alkyl, fluoroalkyl, and perfluoroalkyl halides. An in-depth study of the reaction parameters highlights the use of dimethyl carbonate as a preferred polymerization solvent and outlines the structure-property relationship for hypervalent iodide carboxylates and halide initiators in both the free radical and iodine degenerative transfer controlled radical polymerization (IDT-CRP) of VDF. Finally, the rational selection of metal carbonyls that are successful not only as IDT mediators but, more importantly, in the quantitative activation of both PVDF-CH2-CF2-I and PVDF-CF2-CH2-I chain ends toward the synthesis of well-defined PVDF block copolymers is presented.

Abstract
A series of rate studies were conducted to evaluate the steric and electronic properties that govern the reactivity of iodoarene amide catalysts in the α-oxytosylation of propiophenone. A meta-substituted benzamide catalyst emerged as the most reactive. This catalyst was employed in the α-oxytosylation of a series of substituted propiophenones, returning the α-tosyloxy ketone products in excellent isolated yield.

Abstract
The first o-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) mediated oxidation of unactivated amines to imines is described. A range of meso-pyrrolidines were shown to be suitable substrates. The chemical space was further explored with one-pot oxidative Ugi-type and aza-Friedel-Crafts reactions, which proved to be highly diastereoselective.
