Homocoupling of benzyl halides catalyzed by POCOP–nickel pincer complexes

Visible-Light-Promoted Thiolation of Benzyl Chlorides with Thiosulfonates via a Photoactive Electron Donor-Acceptor Complex

Visible-light-promoted thiolation of benzyl chlorides with thiosulfonates is disclosed via an electron donor-acceptor complex strategy. In addition to efficiently delivering a series of arylbenzylsulfide compounds, versatile thioglycosides were also successfully constructed by applying the metal- and photocatalyst-free protocol. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that a radical-radical coupling process was involved in this transformation.

Diverse structural reactivity patterns of a POCOP ligand with coinage metals

We have utilised the 4,6-di-tert-butyl resorcinol bis(diphenylphosphinite) (POCOP) ligand for exploring its coordination ability towards group 11 metal centres. The treatment of the bidentate ligand 1 with various coinage metal precursors afforded a wide range of structurally diverse complexes 2-12, depending upon the metal precursors used. This furnishes several multinuclear Cu(I) complexes with dimeric (2) and tetrameric cores (3, 4, and 5). The tetrameric stairstep complex 4 shows thermochromic behaviour, whereas the dimeric complex 2 and tetrameric complex 3 show luminescence properties at cryogenic temperatures. Interestingly, the halide substitution reaction of the dimeric complex 2 with KPPh2 produces a unique mixed phosphine-based tetrameric Cu(I) complex, 5. Treatment of the POCOP ligand with [CuBF4(CH3CN)4] in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine afforded heteroleptic complex 6, consisting of tri- and tetra-coordinated cationic Cu(I) centres. Furthermore, we could also isolate cubane (8) and stairstep (9) complexes of Ag(I). The cationic Au(I) complex (12) was obtained from the dinuclear Au(I) complex of POCOP, 11. Complex 12 revealed the presence of a strong intramolecular aurophilic interaction with an Au⋯Au bond distance of 3.1143(9) Å. Subsequently, the photophysical properties of these complexes have been studied. All the complexes were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, routine NMR techniques, and mass spectroscopy.

Structures of nickel chloride and thiolate complexes supported by PCN and POCOP pincer ligands and catalytic reactivity of the chloride complexes

Nickel chloride and thiolate complexes supported by benzene-pyridine-based nonsymmetrical PCN pincer ligands, [2-(tBu2PO)-6-(2-pyrindinyl-4-R)-C6H3]NiX (R = H, CH3, CF3; X = Cl, SH, SPh), were synthesized and fully characterized. The structures of these complexes and the catalytic reactivity of the chloride complexes were investigated along with the related POCOP counterparts [2,6-(tBu2PO)2C6H3]NiX (X = Cl, SH). It was found that the composition and substitution of the pincer backbone evidently influence the structures and catalytic reactivity. The Ni-P and Ni-Cipso bond lengths in the PCN complexes are significantly shorter than those in the POCOP complex. The Ni-Cl and Ni-S bond lengths in the PCN complexes are longer than those in the POCOP complexes. An electron rich pyrindinyl ring in the PCN complexes makes the Ni-Cl bond longer. The Ni-N bond length is more sensitive to the auxiliary ligand compared with the Ni-P bond length in the PCN complexes. The PCN chloride complexes were found to be active catalysts for selective hydration of nitriles to primary amides in the presence of NaOH at 80 °C and the catalytic activity increases with the increase of electron richness of the pyridinyl ring. However, the corresponding POCOP counterpart is inactive under the same conditions.

Electrochemical deoxygenative homo-couplings of aromatic aldehydes

An electrochemical deoxygenative homo-coupling of aromatic aldehydes is achieved to selectively access bibenzyl and stilbene derivatives. The protocol allows the homo-coupling of aldehydes to occur after single-electron-reduction at the cathode. Taking advantage of the oxophilicity of triphenylphosphine, the electrochemical deoxygenation proceeds smoothly to give reductive homo-coupling products.

Effective Activation of Strong C-Cl Bonds for Highly Selective Photosynthesis of Bibenzyl via Homo-Coupling

Carbon-carbon (C-C) coupling of organic halides has been successfully achieved in homogeneous catalysis, while the limitation, e.g., the dependence on rare noble metals, complexity of the metal-ligand catalylst and the poor catalyst stability and recyclability, needs to be tackled for a green process. The past few years have witnessed heterogeneous photocatalysis as a green and novel method for organic synthesis processes. However, the study on C-C coupling of chloride substrates is rare due to the extremely high bond energy of C-Cl bond (327 kJ mol-1 ). Here, we report a robust heterogeneous photocatalyst (Cu/ZnO) to drive the homo-coupling of benzyl chloride with high efficiency, which achieves an unprecedented high selectivity of bibenzyl (93 %) and yield rate of 92 % at room temperature. Moreover, this photocatalytic process has been validated for C-C coupling of 10 benzylic chlorides all with high yields. In addition, the excellent stability has been observed for 8 cycles of reactions. With detailed characterization and DFT calculation, the high selectivity is attributed to the enhanced adsorption of reactants, stabilization of intermediates (benzyl radicals) for the selective coupling by the Cu loading and the moderate oxidation ability of the ZnO support, besides the promoted charge separation and transfer by Cu species.

Homocoupling of benzyl pyridyl ethers via visible light-mediated deoxygenation

The photocatalytic coupling of ethers is uncommon because of the challenges in breaking C-O bonds and low selectivity. Herein, we report a visible light-mediated deoxygenation homocoupling of benzyl pyridyl ethers via their pyridium salts. This approach enables C(sp3)-O bond homolysis under mild conditions. Mechanistic experiments support the radical nature of the reaction. This method is highly compatible with electron-withdrawing groups and has potential applications for drug precursor synthesis.

Reactive separation of β-bromoethylbenzene from α-β-bromoethylbenzene mixtures: a Zn2+-mediated radical polymerization mechanism

A Zn²⁺-induced reactive separation method for the purification of β-bromoethylbenzene from α-β-bromoethylbenzene mixtures is discovered, where the selective decomposition of α-bromoethylbenzene follows a radical mechanism. Zn²⁺ facilitates the homolysis of the C-Br bond of halohydrocarbons with benzyl bromide, enabling the separation of the corresponding isomers with almost identical physical properties.

Which Type of Pincer Complex Is Thermodynamically More Stable? Understanding the Structures and Relative Bond Strengths of Group 10 Metal Complexes Supported by Benzene-Based PYCYP Pincer Ligands

The influence of the pincer platform composition and substitution on the reactivity and physical properties of pincer complexes can be easily explored through different experimental techniques. However, the influence of these factors on the molecular structures and thermodynamic stability of pincer complexes is usually very subtle and cannot always be unambiguously established. To rationalize this subtle influence, a survey of crystallographic data from 130 group 10 metal pincer complexes supported by benzene-based PYCYP pincer ligands, [2,6-(R₂PY)₂C₆H_3-nR'_n]MX (Y = CH₂, NH, O, S; M = Ni, Pd, Pt; R = ^tBu, ⁱPr, Ph, Cy, Me; R' = CO₂Me, ^tBu, CF₃, Ac; n = 0-2; X = F, Cl, Br, I, H, SH, SPh, SBn, Ph, Me, N₃, NCS), was carried out. Theoretical calculations for some selected complexes were performed to evaluate the relative bond strength. It was found that the M-C_ipso bond length decreases following the linker series of CH₂ > NH > O and that the relative M-C_ipso bond strength increases following the linker series of CH₂ < NH < O. In most cases, the M-P bond length decreases following the linker series of NH > CH₂ > O. The relative M-P bond strength increases following the linker series of CH₂ < NH < O. A comparison of the thermochemical balance for the isodesmic displacement of the side-arm interactions with PH₃ as a probe ligand indicated that the Ni-P bond in a PCCCP-type pincer complex is far less difficult to break compared with that in a POCOP-type complex. As a result, with the same donor substituents and the same auxiliary ligand, the POCOP-type pincer complexes are thermodynamically more stable than the PCCCP complexes. The influence of other backbone and donor substitutions as well as the pincer platform composition on the M-C_ipso, M-P, and M-X bond lengths, relative bond strengths, and P-M-P bite angles was also discussed.

A Comparative Study on the Thermodynamics of Halogen Bonding of Group 10 Pincer Fluoride Complexes

The thermodynamics of halogen bonding of a series of isostructural Group 10 metal pincer fluoride complexes of the type [(3,5‐R₂‐^tBuPOCOP^tBu)MF] (3,5‐R₂‐^tBuPOCOP^tBu=κ³‐C₆HR₂‐2,6‐(OPtBu₂)₂ with R=H, tBu, COOMe; M=Ni, Pd, Pt) and iodopentafluorobenzene was investigated. Based on NMR experiments at different temperatures, all complexes 1‐tBu (R=tBu, M=Ni), 2‐H (R=H, M=Pd), 2‐tBu (R=tBu, M=Pd), 2‐COOMe (R=COOMe, M=Pd) and 3‐tBu (R=tBu, M=Pt) form strong halogen bonds with Pd complexes showing significantly stronger binding to iodopentafluorobenzene. Structural and computational analysis of a model adduct of complex 2‐tBu with 1,4‐diiodotetrafluorobenzene as well as of structures of iodopentafluorobenzene in toluene solution shows that formation of a type I contact occurs.

Non-precious metal complexes with an anionic PCP pincer architecture

This perspective article provides an overview of the advancements in the field of non-precious metal complexes featuring anionic PCP pincer ligands with the inclusion of aliphatic systems. It covers research from the beginning in 1976 until late 2015 and provides a summary of key developments in this area, which is, to date, limited to the metals nickel, cobalt, iron, and molybdenum. While the research in nickel PCP complexes is already quite extensive, the chemistry of cobalt, iron, and molybdenum PCP complexes is comparatively sparse. With other non-precious metals such as copper, manganese, chromium or vanadium no PCP complexes are known as yet. In the case of nickel PCP complexes already many catalytic applications such as Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, C-S cross coupling, Kharasch and Michael additions, hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones, cyanomethylation of aldehydes, and hydroamination of nitriles were reported. While iron PCP complexes were found to be active catalysts for the hydrosilylation of aldehydes and ketones as well as the dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane, cobalt PCP complexes were not applied to any catalytic reactions. Surprisingly, only one molybdenum PCP complex is reported, which was capable of cleaving dinitrogen to give a nitride complex. This perspective underlines that the combination of cheap and abundant metals such as nickel, cobalt, and iron with PCP pincer ligands may result in the development of novel, versatile, and efficient catalysts for atom-efficient catalytic reactions.

Cyclopentadienyl nickel(ii) N,C-chelating benzothiazolyl NHC complexes: synthesis, characterization and application in catalytic C–C bond formation reactions

CpNi(ii) N,C-chelating benzothiazolyl NHC complexes have been synthesized. They are efficient catalysts for the homo-coupling of benzyl bromide in the presence of MeMgCl at r.t. with good function group tolerance.

A well-defined low-valent cobalt catalyst Co(PMe3)4 with dimethylzinc: a simple catalytic approach for the reductive dimerization of benzyl halides

We report a simple catalytic version of a cobalt-catalysed reductive homocoupling of benzyl halides by combining Co(PMe₃)₄ and Me₂Zn.

Rapid oxidative hydrogen evolution from a family of square-planar nickel hydride complexes

One-electron oxidation in a family of square planar nickel hydride complexes leads to facile H₂ evolution.

A series of square-planar nickel hydride complexes supported by bis(phosphinite) pincer ligands with varying substituents (–OMe, –Me, and –Bu^t) on the pincer backbone have been synthesized and completely characterized by NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. Their cyclic voltammograms show irreversible oxidation peaks (peak potentials from 101 to 316 mV vs. Fc⁺/Fc) with peak currents consistent with overall one-electron oxidations. Chemical oxidation by the one-electron oxidant Ce(NBu₄)₂(NO₃)₆ was studied by NMR spectroscopy, which provided quantitative evidence for post-oxidative H₂ evolution leading to a solvent-coordinated nickel(ii) species with the pincer backbone intact. Bulk electrolysis of the unsubstituted nickel hydride (3a) showed an overall one-electron stoichiometry and gas chromatographic analysis of the headspace gas after electrolysis further confirmed stoichiometric production of dihydrogen. Due to the extremely high rate of the post-oxidative chemical process, electrochemical simulations have been used to establish a lower limit of the bimolecular rate constant (k_f > 10⁷ M^–1 s^–1) for the H₂ evolution step. To the best of our knowledge, this is the fastest known oxidative H₂ evolution process observed in transition metal hydrides. Quantum chemical calculations based on DFT indicate that the one-electron oxidation of the nickel hydride complex provides a strong chemical driving force (–90.3 kcal mol^–1) for the production of H₂ at highly oxidizing potentials.

Synthesis and characterization of a family of POCOP pincer complexes with nickel: reactivity towards CO2 and phenylacetylene

A cyclohexyl-based POC sp 3OP pincer ligand (POC sp 3OP=cis-1,3-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinito)cyclohexyl) cyclometalates with nickel to generate a series of new POC sp 3OP-supported Ni(II) complexes, including the halide, hydride, methyl, and phenyl species. trans-[NiCl{cis-1,3-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinito)cyclohexane}], [(POC sp 3OP)NiCl] (1 a) and the analogous bromide complex (1 b) were synthesized and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of 1 a and 1 b alongside their bis(phosphine) analogues [(PC sp 3P)NiCl] (2 a) and [(PC sp 3P)NiCl] (2 a) (PC sp 3P=cis-1,3-bis(di-tert-butylphosphino)cyclohexyl) indicate a reduced electron density at the metal center upon introducing electron-withdrawing oxygen atoms in the pincer arms. The methyl [(POC sp 3OP)NiMe] (3) and phenyl [(POC sp 3OP)NiPh] (4) complexes were formed from 1 a by reaction with the corresponding organolithium reagents. 1 a also reacts with LiAlH4 to give the hydride complex [(POC sp 3OP)NiH] (5). The methyl complex 3 reacts with phenyl acetylene to give the acetylide complex [(POC sp 3OP)NiCCPh] (6). The reactivity of compounds 3-5 towards CO2 was studied. The hydride complex 5 and the methyl complex 3 both underwent CO2 insertion to form the formate species [(POC sp 3OP)NiOCOH] (7) and acetate species [(POC sp 3OP)NiOCOCH3 ] (8), respectively, although with a higher barrier of insertion in the latter case. Compound 4 was unreactive towards CO2 even at elevated temperatures. Complexes 3-8 were all characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

{2,6-Bis[(2,6-diisopropyl-phosphan-yl)-oxy]-4-fluoro-phenyl-κ(3)P,C(1),P'}(1H-pyrazole-κN(2))nickel(II) hexa-fluoro-phosphate

The title compound, [Ni(C₁₈H₃₀FO₂P₂)(C₃H₄N₂)]PF₆, was prepared by halide abstraction with TlPF₆ in the presence of CH₃CN in CDCl₃ from the respective neutral pincer chlorido analogue followed by addition of pyrazole. The PO—C—OP pincer ligand acts in typical trans-P₂ tridentate fashion to generate a distorted square-planar nickel structure. The Ni—N(pyrazole) distance is 1.925 (2) Å and the plane of the pyrazole ligand is rotated 56.2 (1)° relative to the approximate square plane surrounding the Ni^II center in which the pyrazole is bound to the Ni^II atom through its sp²-hybridized N atom. This Ni—N distance is similar to bond lengths in the other reported Ni^II pincer-ligand square-planar pyrazole complex structures; however, its dihedral angle is significantly larger than any of those for the latter set of pyrazole complexes.
