Abstract
Herein, we described the novel synthetic strategy for the total synthesis of harvestmen natural product (4S,5S)‑4-hydroxy-γ-decalactone (minor) from an inexpensive precursor ((R)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-carbaldehyde) with 31% overall yield. Hydroxy-γ-lactones represent a special class of harvestmen exocrine defense compounds. The present convergent synthesis utilizes classical reactions like the Barbier reaction, the Grignard reaction, and the employment of an olefin as a masked carboxylic acid functionality followed by lactone formation as key steps.

Abstract
γ-Butyrolactone, a five-membered lactone moiety, is one of the privileged structures of diverse natural products and biologically active small molecules. Because of their broad spectrum of biological and pharmacological activities, synthetic methods for γ-butyrolactones have received significant attention from synthetic and medicinal chemists for decades. Recently, new developments and improvements in traditional methods have been reported by considering synthetic efficiency, feasibility, and green chemistry. In this review, the pharmacological activities of natural and synthetic γ-butyrolactones are described, including their structures and bioassay methods. Mainly, we summarize recent advances, occurring during the past decade, in the construction of γ-butyrolactone classified based on the bond formation in γ-butyrolactone between (i) C5-O1 bond, (ii) C4-C5 and C2-O1 bonds, (iii) C3-C4 and C2-O1 bonds, (iv) C3-C4 and C5-O1 bonds, (v) C2-C3 and C2-O1 bonds, (vi) C3-C4 bond, and (vii) C2-O1 bond. In addition, the application to the total synthesis of natural products bearing γ-butyrolactone scaffolds is described.

Abstract
An unprecedented strain-driven dyotropic rearrangement of α-methylene-β-lactones has been realized, which enables the efficient access of a wide range of α-methylene-γ-butyrolactones displaying remarkable structural diversity. Several appealing features of the reaction, including excellent efficiency, high stereospecificity, predictable chemoselectivity and broad substrate scope, render it a powerful tool for the synthesis of MBL-containing molecules of either natural or synthetic origin. Both experimental and computational evidences suggest that the new variant of dyotropic rearrangements proceed in a dualistic pattern: while an asynchronous concerted mechanism most likely accounts for the reactions featuring hydrogen migration, a stepwise process involving a phenonium ion intermediate is favored in the cases of aryl migration. The great synthetic potential of the title reaction is exemplified by its application to the efficient construction of several natural products and relevant scaffolds.

Abstract
A Bi(OTf)3-catalyzed ring-opening cyclization of (hetero)aryl cyclopropyl carbinols to form α-alkylidene-γ-butyrolactones (ABLs) is reported. This transformation represents different chemoselectivity from previous reports that demonstrated formation of (hetero)aryl-fused cyclohexa-1,3-dienes upon acid-promoted cyclopropyl carbinol ring opening. ABLs are obtained in up to 89% yield with a general preference for the E-isomers. Mechanistically, Bi(OTf)3 serves as a stable and easy to handle precursor to TfOH. TfOH then catalyzes the formation of cyclopropyl carbinyl cations, which undergo ring opening, intramolecular trapping by the neighboring ester group, subsequent hydrolysis, and loss of methanol resulting in the formation of the ABLs. The nature and relative positioning of the substituents on both the carbinol and the cyclopropane determine both chemo- and stereoselective outcomes. Carbinol substituents determine the extent of cyclopropyl carbinyl cation formation. The cyclopropane donor substituents determine the overall reaction chemoselectivity. Weakly stabilizing or electron-poor donor groups provide better yields of the ABL products. In contrast, copious amounts of competing products are observed with highly stabilizing cyclopropane donor substituents. Finally, a predictive model for E/Z selectivity was developed using DFT calculations.

Abstract
A regio- and stereoselective one-pot C-H insertion/olefination protocol has been developed for the late stage installation of α-methylene-γ-butyrolactones into conformationally restricted cyclohexanol-derivatives. The method has been successfully applied in the total synthesis of eudesmanolide natural product frameworks, including α-cyclocostunolide.
