Aryl-substituted dimethylbenzimidazolines as effective reductants of photoinduced electron transfer reactions

Sensitizer-Free Photochemical Regeneration of Benzimidazoline Organohydride

Organohydrides are an important class of organic compounds that can provide hydride anions for chemical and biochemical reactions, as demonstrated by reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides serving as important natural redox cofactors. The coupling of hydride transfer from the organohydride to the substrate and subsequent regeneration of the organohydride from its oxidized form can realize organohydride-catalyzed reduction reactions. Depending on the structure of the organohydride, its hydridicity and ease of regeneration vary. Benzimidazoline (BIH) is one of the strongest synthetic C-H hydride donors; however, its reductive regeneration requires highly reducing conditions. In this study, we synthesized various oxidized and reduced forms of BIH derivatives with aryl groups at the 2-position and investigated their photophysical and electrochemical properties. 4-(Dimethylamino)phenyl-substituted BIH exhibited salient red-shifted absorption compared with other synthesized BIH derivatives, and visible-light-driven regeneration without using an external photosensitizer was achieved. This knowledge has significant implications for the future development of solar-energy-based catalytic photoreduction technologies that utilize organohydride regeneration strategies.

Triarylamine-Substituted Benzimidazoliums as Electron Donor-Acceptor Dyad-Type Photocatalysts for Reductive Organic Transformations

Triarylamine-substituted benzimidazoliums (BI⁺-PhNAr₂), new electron donor-acceptor dyad molecules, were synthesized. Their photocatalytic properties for reductive organic transformations were explored using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, redox potential determinations, density functional theory calculations, transient absorption spectroscopy, and reduction reactions of selected substrates. The results show that irradiation of BI⁺-PhNAr₂ promotes photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer to form a long-lived (∼300 μs) charge shifted state (BI^•-PhN^•+Ar₂). In the pathway for photocatalysis of reduction reactions of substrates, BI^•-PhN^•+Ar₂ is subsequently transformed to the neutral benzimidazolyl radical (BI^•-PhNAr₂) by single-electron transfer from the donor 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenylbenzimidazoline (BIH-Ph) serving as a cooperative agent. Among the benzimidazoliums explored, the bromo-substituted analogue BI⁺-PhN(C₆H₄Br-p)₂ in conjunction with BIH-Ph demonstrates the most consistent catalytic performance.

Imidazolidine Hydride Donors in Palladium-Catalyzed Alkyne Hydroarylation

Aldehyde-derived imidazolidines participate as hydride donors in intramolecular reductive Heck-type reactions. N,N′-Diphenylimidazolidines prepared from ortho-alkynyl benzaldehydes underwent regio- and stereoselective palladium-catalyzed hydroarylation followed by formal 1,5-hydride transfer and reductive elimination to afford substituted alkenes and imidazolium moieties, the latter conveniently converted in situ to ring-opened benzanilides to simplify product isolation. Internal alkynes were converted to trisubstituted alkenes via a syn hydroarylation process, while a terminal alkyne was converted to a cis alkene via a formal trans hydroarylation reaction. Benzanilide products could be converted to carboxylic acid derivatives under basic conditions, resulting in the net conversion of alkynyl aldehydes to alkenyl carboxylic acids. A styrene derivative with an attached N,N′-dimethylbenzimidazoline hydride donor was also found to undergo an analogous hydroarylation/benzimidazoline oxidation to give a diarylethane product.

A Photocatalytic System Composed of Benzimidazolium Aryloxide and Tetramethylpiperidine 1-Oxyl to Promote Desulfonylative α-Oxyamination Reactions of α-Sulfonylketones

A new photocatalytic system was developed for carrying out desulfonylative α-oxyamination reactions of α-sulfonylketones in which α-ketoalkyl radicals are generated. The catalytic system is composed of benzimidazolium aryloxide betaines (BI⁺-ArO^-), serving as visible light-absorbing electron donor photocatalysts, and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO), playing dual roles as an electron donor for catalyst recycling and a reagent to capture the generated radical intermediates. Information about the detailed nature of BI⁺-ArO^- and the photocatalytic processes with TEMPO was gained using absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical measurements, and density functional theory calculations.

Reticular-Chemistry-Inspired Supramolecule Design as a Tool to Achieve Efficient Photocatalysts for CO2 Reduction

Photocatalytic CO₂ reduction into C1 products is one of the most trending research subjects of current times as sustainable energy generation is the utmost need of the hour. In this review, we have tried to comprehensively summarize the potential of supramolecule-based photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction into C1 compounds. At the outset, we have thrown light on the inert nature of gaseous CO₂ and the various challenges researchers are facing in its reduction. The evolution of photocatalysts used for CO₂ reduction, from heterogeneous catalysis to supramolecule-based molecular catalysis, and subsequent semiconductor-supramolecule hybrid catalysis has been thoroughly discussed. Since CO₂ is thermodynamically a very stable molecule, a huge reduction potential is required to undergo its one- or multielectron reduction. For this reason, various supramolecule photocatalysts were designed involving a photosensitizer unit and a catalyst unit connected by a linker. Later on, solid semiconductor support was also introduced in this supramolecule system to achieve enhanced durability, structural compactness, enhanced charge mobility, and extra overpotential for CO₂ reduction. Reticular chemistry is seen to play a pivotal role as it allows bringing all of the positive features together from various components of this hybrid semiconductor-supramolecule photocatalyst system. Thus, here in this review, we have discussed the selection and role of various components, viz. the photosensitizer component, the catalyst component, the linker, the semiconductor support, the anchoring ligands, and the peripheral ligands for the design of highly performing CO₂ reduction photocatalysts. The selection and role of various sacrificial electron donors have also been highlighted. This review is aimed to help researchers reach an understanding that may translate into the development of excellent CO₂ reduction photocatalysts that are operational under visible light and possess superior activity, efficiency, and selectivity.

Competitive Desulfonylative Reduction and Oxidation of α-Sulfonylketones Promoted by Photoinduced Electron Transfer with 2-Hydroxyaryl-1,3-dimethylbenzimidazolines under Air

Desulfonylation reactions of α-sulfonylketones promoted by photoinduced electron transfer with 2-hydroxyarylbenzimidazolines (BIH-ArOH) were investigated. Under aerobic conditions, photoexcited 2-hydroxynaphthylbenzimidazoline (BIH-NapOH) promotes competitive reduction (forming alkylketones) and oxidation (producing α-hydroxyketones) of sulfonylketones through pathways involving the intermediacy of α-ketoalkyl radicals. The results of an examination of the effects of solvents, radical trapping reagents, substituents of sulfonylketones, and a variety of hydroxyaryl- and aryl-benzimidazolines (BIH-ArOH and BIH-Ar) suggest that the oxidation products are produced by dissociation of α-ketoalkyl radicals from the initially formed solvent-caged radical ion pairs followed by reaction with molecular oxygen. In addition, the observations indicate that the reduction products are generated by proton or hydrogen atom transfer in solvent-caged radical ion pairs derived from benzimidazolines and sulfonylketones. The results also suggest that arylsulfinate anions arising by carbon-sulfur bond cleavage of sulfonylketone radical anions act as reductants in the oxidation pathway to convert initially formed α-hydroperoxyketones to α-hydroxyketones. Finally, density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the structures and properties of radical ions of sulfonylketones as well as BIH-NapOH.

Interplay between Structure and Mechanism in Reductive Dissociative Electron Transfers to α,β -Epoxyketones

The electrochemical reduction of several α,β -epoxyketones was studied using cyclic (linear sweep) voltammetry, convolution voltammetry, and homogeneous redox catalysis. The results were reconciled to pertinent theories of electron transfer. α,β -Epoxyketones undergo dissociative electron-transfer reactions with C-O bond cleavage, via both stepwise and concerted mechanisms, depending on their structure. For aliphatic ketones, the preferred mechanism of reduction is consistent with the "sticky" concerted model for dissociative electron transfer. Bond cleavage occurs simultaneously with electron transfer, and there is a residual, electrostatic interaction in the ring-opened (distonic) radical anion. In contrast, for aromatic ketones, because the ring-closed radical anions are resonance-stabilized and exist at energy minima, a stepwise mechanism operates (electron transfer and bond cleavage occur in discrete steps). The rate constants for ring opening are on the order of 10⁸  s^-1 , and not significantly affected by substituents on the 3-membered ring (consistent with C-O bond cleavage). These results and conclusions were fully supported and augmented by molecular orbital calculations.

Sterically Regulated α-Oxygenation of α-Bromocarbonyl Compounds Promoted Using 2-Aryl-1,3-dimethylbenzimidazolines and Air

A debrominative oxygenation protocol has been developed for the conversion of α-bromo-α,α-dialkyl-substituted carbonyl compounds to their corresponding α-hydroxy analogues. For example, stirring a solution of α-bromoisobutyrophenone and 2-aryl-1,3-dimethylbenzimidazoline (BIH-Ar) at room temperature under an air atmosphere leads to the efficient formation of α-hydroperoxyisobutyrophenone, which can be converted to α-hydroxyisobutyrophenone using Me₂S reduction. In contrast, reaction of α-bromoacetophenone under the same conditions produces the α-hydrogenated product acetophenone. α-Keto-alkyl and benzimidazolyl radicals (BI^•-Ar), generated via dissociative electron transfer from BIH-Ar to α-bromoketone substrates, serve as key intermediates in the oxidation and reduction processes. The dramatic switch from hydrogenation to oxygenation is attributed to a steric effect of α-alkyl substituents, which causes hydrogen atom abstraction from sterically crowded BIH-Ar to α-keto-alkyl radicals to be slow and enable preferential reaction with molecular oxygen. Generation of the α-keto-alkyl radical and BI^•-Ar intermediates in these process and their sterically governed hydrogen atom transfer reactions are supported by results arising from DFT calculations. Moreover, an electron spin resonance study showed that visible light irradiation of phenyl benzimidazoline (BIH-Ph) in the presence of molecular oxygen produces the benzimidazolyl radical (BI^•-Ph). The addition of thiophenol into the reaction of α-bromoisobutyrophenone and BIH-Ph predominantly produced α-phenylthiolated isobutyrophenone even if a high concentration of molecular oxygen exists. Furthermore, the developed protocol was applied to other α-bromo-α,α-dialkylated carbonyl compounds.

Protocol for Visible-Light-Promoted Desulfonylation Reactions Utilizing Catalytic Benzimidazolium Aryloxide Betaines and Stoichiometric Hydride Donor Reagents

An unprecedented photocatalytic system consisting of benzimidazolium aryloxide betaines (BI⁺-ArO^-) and stoichiometric hydride reducing reagents was developed for carrying out desulfonylation reactions of N-sulfonyl-indoles, -amides, and -amines, and α-sulfonyl ketones. Measurements of absorption spectra and cyclic voltammograms as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to gain mechanistic information. In the catalytic system, visible-light-activated benzimidazoline aryloxides (BIH-ArO^-), generated in situ by hydride reduction of the corresponding betaines BI⁺-ArO^-, donate both an electron and a hydrogen atom to the substrates. A modified protocol was also developed so that a catalytic quantity of more easily prepared hydroxyaryl benzimidazolines (BIH-ArOH) is used along with a stoichiometric hydride donor to promote the photochemical desulfonylation reactions.

Photoinduced Electron Transfer-Promoted Reactions Using Exciplex-Type Organic Photoredox Catalyst Directly Linking Donor and Acceptor Arenes

Directly linked donor and acceptor arenes, such as phenanthrene/naphthalene/biphenyl and 1,3-dicyanobenzene were found to work as photoredox catalysts in the photoreactions of indene, 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene, and 4-methoxyphenylacetic acid. The new stable organic photocatalyst forms an intramolecular exciplex (excited complex) when irradiated in a polar solvent and shows redox catalyst activity, even at low concentrations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of an intramolecular exciplex working as a redox catalyst.

Ruthenium Picolinate Complex as a Redox Photosensitizer With Wide-Band Absorption

Ruthenium(II) picolinate complex, [Ru(dmb)₂(pic)]⁺ (Ru(pic); dmb = 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine; Hpic = picolinic acid) was newly synthesized as a potential redox photosensitizer with a wider wavelength range of visible-light absorption compared with [Ru(N^∧N)₃]²⁺ (N^∧N = diimine ligand), which is the most widely used redox photosensitizer. Based on our investigation of its photophysical and electrochemical properties, Ru(pic) was found to display certain advantageous characteristics of wide-band absorption of visible light (λ_abs < 670 nm) and stronger reduction ability in a one-electron reduced state (E1/2red = −1.86 V vs. Ag/AgNO₃), which should function favorably in photon-absorption and electron transfer to the catalyst, respectively. Performing photocatalysis using Ru(pic) as a redox photosensitizer combined with a Re(I) catalyst reduced CO₂ to CO under red-light irradiation (λ_ex > 600 nm). TON_CO reached 235 and Φ_CO was 8.0%. Under these conditions, [Ru(dmb)₃]²⁺ (Ru(dmb)) is not capable of working as a redox photosensitizer because it does not absorb light at λ > 560 nm. Even in irradiation conditions where both Ru(pic) and Ru(dmb) absorb light (λ_ex > 500 nm), using Ru(pic) demonstrated faster CO formation (TOF_CO = 6.7 min⁻¹) and larger TON_CO (2347) than Ru(dmb) (TOF_CO = 3.6 min⁻¹; TON_CO = 2100). These results indicate that Ru(pic) is a superior redox photosensitizer over a wider wavelength range of visible-light absorption.

Benzimidazolium Naphthoxide Betaine Is a Visible Light Promoted Organic Photoredox Catalyst

Benzimidazolium naphthoxide (^-ONap-BI⁺) was first synthesized and utilized as an unprecedented betaine photoredox catalyst. Photoexcited state of ^-ONap-BI⁺ generated by visible light irradiation catalyzes the reductive deiodination as well as desulfonylation reactions in which 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenylbenzimidazoline (Ph-BIH) cooperates with as an electron and hydrogen atom donor. Significant solvent effects on the reaction progress were discovered, and specific solvation toward imidazolium and naphthoxide moieties of ^-ONap-BI⁺ was proposed.

Elemental steps of the thermodynamics of dihydropyrimidine: a new class of organic hydride donors

25 Dihydropyrimidine derivatives, a new class of organo-hydrides, were designed and synthesized by the Biginelli reaction. For the first time, the thermodynamic driving forces of the six elemental steps to obtain a hydride in acetonitrile were determined by isothermal titration and electrochemical methods, respectively. The effects of molecular structures and substituents on these thermodynamic parameters were examined, uncovering some interesting structure-reactivity relationships. Both the thermodynamic and kinetic studies show that the hydride transfer from dihydropyrimidines to 9-phenylxanthylium (PhXn⁺ClO₄^-) prefers a concerted mechanism.
