Abstract
Quaternary N-aryl-DABCO salts were introduced for the first time as a highly selective sensing platform for thiols and selenols. By employing this platform, a highly sensitive coumarin based "off-on" fluorescent probe was designed and synthesized. The probe possesses a good solubility in water, low background fluorescence, and, most importantly, demonstrates high selectivity to aryl thiols and selenols over their aliphatic counterparts and other common nucleophiles. A dramatic increase in fluorescence intensity is achieved through the selective cleavage of the quaternized DABCO-ring, yielding a piperazine derivatives with a high fluorescence quantum yield (~72 %). Moreover, stability of the probe to the most used reducing agents DTT and TCEP was demonstrated. The limits of detection for p-thiocresol and phenyl selenide were evaluated to be 22 nM and 6 nM, respectively.

Abstract
Excited-state intermolecular proton transfer (inter-ESPT) fluorescent probes responsive to specific bioactive molecules should be greatly promising for protein sensing, DNA mutation simulating and cellular process regulating. However, the inter-ESPT molecules are recessive ESPT fluorophores, which need the assistance of other molecules with both hydrogen-bond accepting and donating abilities to turn on the tautomeric fluorescence. Valid design strategies to create powerful inter-ESPT fluorescent probes are poorly developed, particularly for proteins as targets. We recently reported a unique supramolecular strategy to trigger the inter-ESPT process based on the probe-protein recognition by H-bonding and to image protein-based subcellular structures in live cells. Herein, we found that our inter-ESPT probes (inter-ESPT-01) bearing a 2-amino-3-cyanopyridine scaffold can anchor proteins and light up the "invisible" ESPT state, so as to image the proteins or the protein-based subcellular organelles. More importantly, the inter-ESPT emission of inter-ESPT-01 can be significantly enhanced by the FRET process between amino and imino tautomers, endowing the inter-ESPT-01 probes with super-bright tautomeric fluorescence. The expressed proteins Ecallantide and MarTX were selected as the models to light up the inter-ESPT fluorescence of the probes and revealed that the inter-ESPT process can be triggered by the specific probe-protein recognition events. In the use of the super-bright inter-ESPT fluorescence, not only the proteins, but also the protein-based cilia and tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) can be specifically visualized in living cancer cells. Furthermore, such recognition-driven strategy allows us to construct a unique inter-ESPT probe to track and image specific endogenous proteins in live cells, highlighting the potential of inter-ESPT fluorogens as novel intelligent biomaterials.

Abstract
Hydrazine is a highly toxic and flammable liquid that can damage human liver, kidney, and central nervous system. Therefore, it is valuable to seek a quick and sensitive method for hydrazine detection in environmental and biological science. Herein, a new fluorescent probe derived from 3-hydroxyphthalimide was synthesized. This probe can rapidly and selectively detect hydrazine with a low detection limit of 4.3 × 10-7 M. The recognition principle is based on hydrazine-induced acetyl deprotection and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. Moreover, test paper and fluorescence image experiments showed that this probe had potential to monitor hydrazine in the environment and living cells.

Abstract
Thiophenols, a class of significant industrial materials, are extremely toxic in environmental as well live cells. However, the process of live cells responding to thiophenols is not well understood. Herein, an innovative "OFF-ON" probe FY for thiophenols selectively in 100% aqueous solution was reported. It featured rapid response (~150 s), prominent sensitivity (detection limit: 5 nM), and large Stokes shift (~104 nm), which assured specific detection of thiophenols in A375 cells, HeLa cells and environment. Especially, it proved that thiophenols in live cells can be eliminated by endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS), indicating that thiophenols may result in cellular oxidative stress. As well, it was resoundingly put into recognizing of thiophenols quantitatively in actual water samples and in serum.

Abstract
Based on an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) fluorophore, a novel fluorescent off-on probe for detection of thiophenols was designed and synthesized. This probe (λex = 401 nm, λem = 527 nm) displayed high specificity for sensing thiophenols over other biologically related species. Besides, this probe possessed capabilities of monitoring thiophenols with rapid response rate (3 min), a large Stokes shift (126 nm), and high sensitivity (2.7 nM). The sensing mechanism was considered to be that thiophenols triggered thiolysis of the probe and the ESIPT fluorophore was released, as confirmed by means of HPLC and HRMS. Most notably, this probe was successfully applied to monitor levels of thiophenols in realistic samples and MDA-MB-231 cells. Graphical abstract A novel phenothiazine-based fluorescent probe was developed for sensitively sensing thiophenols in both aqueous medium and living cells.

Abstract
Thiophenols are a class of highly toxic environmental pollutant, hence it is very necessary to monitor thiophenols in environment and living cells with an efficient and reliable method. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe for thiophenols has been developed, which exhibited a colorimetric and fluorescence turn-on dual response towards thiophenols with good selectivity and fast response. The sensing mechanism for thiophenols was attributed to nucleophilic substitution reaction, which was confirmed by HPLC. The probe exhibited good recovery (from 90% to 107%) and low limit of detection for thiophenols (37nM) in industrial wastewater. Moreover, the probe has been successfully employed to visualize thiophenol in living cells. Therefore, the fluorescent probe has good capability for monitoring thiophenols in environmental samples and biological systems.

Abstract
A new turn-on phthalimide fluorescent probe has designed and synthesized for sensing cysteine (Cys) based on excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. It is consisted of a 3-hydroxyphthalimide derivative moiety as the fluorophore and an acrylic ester group as a recognition receptor. The acrylic ester acts as an ESIPT blocking agent. Upon addition of cystein, intermolecular nucleophilic attack of cysteine on acrylic ester releases the fluorescent 3-hydroxyphthalimide derivative, thereby enabling the ESIPT process and leading to enhancement of fluorescence. The probe displays high sensitivity, excellent selectivity and with large Stokes shift toward cysteine. The linear interval range of the fluorescence titration ranged from 0 to 1.0×10-5M and detection limit is low (6×10-8M). In addition, the probe could be used for bio-imaging in living cells.

Abstract
An imidazo [1,5-α]pyridine-based fluorescent probe MIPY-DNP with a large Stokes shift (173 nm) for the sensing of thiophenols in aqueous medium has been developed. This probe with 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether as a highly thiophenol-selective group was constructed based on the combination of PET and ESIPT mechanisms. Upon the treatment with thiophenols, MIPY-DNP produced a remarkable fluorescence enhancement (209-fold) at 478 nm. The detect limit for thiophenols was calculated to be as low as 5.6 nM. Importantly, the practical utility of MIPY-DNP for the selective detection of thiophenols has been successfully demonstrated in both real water samples and living cells.

Abstract
A 7-hydroxy derivative of 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-one 1 was synthesized and its properties as a new fluorophore undergoing excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) were investigated. In alcohols and dimethylsulfoxide, 1 exhibited dual emission at ca. 380 and 525-540 nm when excited at ca. 336 nm, which agreed well with the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT-calculated emission predictions of 1 and its ESIPT tautomer. In aqueous solutions at near neutral pH, 1 exhibited a broad emission band at ca. 497 nm, presumably caused by the overlap of emissions from 1 and the excited state phenolate species of 1. In binary mixtures of H2O and EtOH, the wavelength and intensity of fluorescence maxima were dependent on the dielectric constant of the solvent, suggesting that 1 could be applied as a fluorescent probe to monitor aqueous environments.
