Wonderful fusion of organofluorine chemistry and decarboxylation strategy

Decarboxylation strategy has been emerging as a powerful tool for the synthesis of fluorine-containing organic compounds that play important roles in various fields such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials science. Considerable progress in decarboxylation has been made over the past decade towards the construction of diverse valuable fluorinated fine chemicals for which the fluorinated part can be brought in two ways. The first way is described as the reaction of non-fluorinated carboxylic acids (and their derivatives) with fluorinating reagents, as well as fluorine-containing building blocks. The second way is dedicated to the exploration and the use of fluorine-containing carboxylic acids (and their derivatives) in decarboxylative transformations. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the development and applications of decarboxylative radical, nucleophilic and cross-coupling strategies in organofluorine chemistry.

Copper-Catalyzed Perfluoroalkylation of Alkynyl Bromides and Terminal Alkynes

A copper-catalyzed one-pot perfluoroalkylation of alkynyl bromides and terminal alkynes has been disclosed, and the corresponding perfluoroalkylated alkynes could be attained in good to excellent yields. The new straightforward transformation shows high efficiency (0.01-0.5 mol % catalyst loading), broad substrate scope, and remarkable functional group tolerance and provides a facile approach for useful application in life and material sciences.

Visible light induced 3-position-selective addition of arylpropiolic acids with ethers via C(sp3)-H functionalization

Although the 2-position-selective decarboxylative coupling or addition of arylpropiolic acids with cyclic ethers has been intensively investigated, selective functionalization of arylpropiolic acids at the 3-position is still a big challenge. Herein, an intriguing and mild method for visible light induced regioselective addition of arylpropiolic acids by attacking exclusively at the 3-position with cyclic/acyclic ethers was developed. A variety of 3,3-bis-substituted acrylic acids were successfully obtained in moderate to excellent yields. A plausible reaction mechanism involving an energy transfer induced radical addition in the presence of visible light and photocatalyst was proposed.

A Cu(ii)-promoted tandem decarboxylative halogenation and oxidative diamination reaction of 2-aminopyridines with alkynoic acids for the synthesis of 2-haloimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines

A copper-promoted cascade decarboxylative halogenation and oxidative diamination reaction sequence of 2-aminopyridines with alkynoic acids has been developed for the synthesis of 2-haloimidazo[1,2-a]pyridines. In this reaction, two C-N bonds and one C-halogen bond are formed in one pot, generating the desired products in good yields. This is the first report on the synthesis of 2-haloimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives from alkynoic acids.

Silver-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Trifluoromethylation of Aliphatic Carboxylic Acids

The silver-catalyzed decarboxylative trifluoromethylation of aliphatic carboxylic acids is described. With AgNO₃ as the catalyst and K₂S₂O₈ as the oxidant, the reactions of aliphatic carboxylic acids with (bpy)Cu(CF₃)₃ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and ZnMe₂ in aqueous acetonitrile at 40 °C afford the corresponding decarboxylative trifluoromethylation products in good yield. The protocol is applicable to various primary and secondary alkyl carboxylic acids and exhibits wide functional group compatibility. Mechanistic studies reveal the intermediacy of ^-Cu(CF₃)₃Me, which undergoes reductive elimination and subsequent oxidation to give Cu(CF₃)₂ as the active species responsible for the trifluoromethylation of alkyl radicals.
