Abstract
Calixarenes represent very popular building blocks in supramolecular chemistry. Compared to other macrocyclic families, they exhibit an almost infinite possibility of derivatization of the basic skeleton, which makes them ideal candidates for the design of new receptors or other functional systems. Although the chemistry of calixarenes is well established, there are still some substitution patterns that are unavailable or require a very lengthy synthetic approach. Among such synthetic challenges is the meta substitution of the aromatic skeleton (relative to phenolic oxygen), which, in conjunction with the 3D structure of calixarenes, leads to the inherent chirality and enables the synthesis of derivatives with a hitherto undescribed topology. This review deals with the current achievements in the meta substitution of calixarenes.

Paramagnetic Properties and Moderately RapidConformational Dynamics in the Cobalt(II) Calix[4]arene Complex by NMR. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27144668. Abstract
1H NMR measurements are reported for the CD2Cl2/CDCl3 solutions of the Co(II) calix[4]arenetetraphosphineoxide complex (I). Temperature dependences of the 1H NMR spectra of I have been analyzed using the line shape analysis, taking into account the temperature variation of paramagnetic chemical shifts, within the frame of the dynamic NMR method. Conformational dynamics of the 2:1 Co(II) calix[4]arene complexes was conditioned by the pinched cone ↔pinched cone interconversion of I (with activation Gibbs energy ΔG≠(298K) = 40 ± 3 kJ/mol. Due to substantial temperature dependence of paramagnetic shifts, complex I can be used as model compound for designing an NMR thermosensor reagent for local temperature monitoring.

Abstract
N-acylated amine-bridged calix[4]arenes exhibit unusual dynamic behaviour which can be attributed to the restricted rotation around the amide C–N bond.

Abstract
N-acyl aminocalix[4]arenes were cyclized with nitriles to afford the expected quinazolines only in the case of para-substituted series. This strategy represents a new route to inherently chiral calixarenes potentially useful as fluorescent receptors.

Abstract
The meta-bridged calixarenes possess a rigidified and highly distorted cavity, where the additional single-bond bridge imposes an extreme internal strain on the whole system. As a consequence, these compounds exhibit a reasonably amended reactivity, compared with common calix[4]arene derivatives, which is governed by the release of internal strain. This can be documented by the reaction of the bridged calix[4]arene with P2O5 or Nafion-H, leading (apart from polymers) to a macrocyclic product with a rearranged basic skeleton. The methylene bridge next to the fluorene moiety is intramolecularly shifted from position 2 to position 4 of the phenolic subunit to minimize the tension. As revealed by single-crystal X-ray analysis and by application of the residual dipolar coupling method, the rearrangement occurs without altering the original conformation.

Abstract
Azobenzene derivatives due to their photo- and electroactive properties are an important group of compounds finding applications in diverse fields. Due to the possibility of controlling the trans-cis isomerization, azo-bearing structures are ideal building blocks for development of e.g. nanomaterials, smart polymers, molecular containers, photoswitches, and sensors. Important role play also macrocyclic compounds well known for their interesting binding properties. In this article selected macrocyclic compounds bearing azo group(s) are comprehensively described. Here, the relationship between compounds' structure and their properties (as e.g. ability to guest complexation, supramolecular structure formation, switching and motion) is reviewed.

Abstract
New p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arenes, which are mono-, 1,2-di- and tetrasubstituted at the lower rim containing N-(4'-nitrophenyl)acetamide and N,N-diethylacetamide groups in cone and partial cone conformations have been synthesized. Their complexation ability towards a number of tetrabutylammonium salts n-Bu4NX (X = F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, CH3CO2-, H2PO4-, NO3-) was studied by UV spectroscopy. The effective receptor for the anions studied as well as selective receptors for F-, CH3CO2- and H2PO4- ions, which based on the synthesized thiacalix[4]arenes, have been obtained. It was shown that p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene tetrasubstituted at the lower rim by N-(4'-nitrophenyl)acetamide moieties bonded to the anions studied with association constants within the range of 3.55 × 103-7.94 × 105 M-1. Besides, the binding selectivity for F-, Cl-, CH3CO2-, and H2PO4- anions against other anions was in the range of 4.1-223.9. Substituting one or two fragments in the macrocycle with N,N-diethylacetamide groups significantly reduces the complexation ability of the receptor. In contrast to the 1,3-disubstituted macrocycle containing two N-(4'-nitrophenyl)acetamide moieties, the 1,2-disubstituted thiacalix[4]arene, which contains only one such fragment and a N,N-diethylacetamide moiety, selectively binds F- anions.
