Abstract
A simple and effective organolithium approach to the synthesis of 2-substituted benzo[cd]indoles from peri-dihalonaphthalenes and nitriles has been developed. The reaction proceeds via a surprisingly easy intramolecular aromatic nucleophilic substitution facilitated by the "clothespin effect". The discovered transformation provides good isolated yields, allows usage of an extensive range of nitriles, and demonstrates a good substituents tolerance. UV-absorption and NMR spectra of the obtained benzo[cd]indoles and their protonated forms demonstrated exclusive protonation to the indole nitrogen atom even in the presence of two NMe2 groups in positions 5 and 6 (i. e. "proton sponge" moiety).

Abstract
A direct, one-pot conversion of 2'-haloacetophenones to 3-methyleneisoindolin-1-one scaffolds using CuCN as the sole reagent without the need for moisture-free or anaerobic conditions is reported. This serendipitously discovered transformation with a broad substrate scope provides a significantly different route towards these important scaffolds. The scope of the method has also been further extended towards the synthesis of three special scaffolds, which are analogous to various bio-active drugs.

Abstract
The RhIII -catalyzed, consecutive double C-H oxidative coupling of free 1-naphthylamine and α,β-unsaturated esters through C-H/C-H and C-H/N-H bonds is reported. The one step reaction leads to the formation of biologically important alkylidene-1,2-dihydrobenzo[cd]indoles scaffolds. This efficient process is much more synthetically convenient and useful than others because the starting materials, such as 1-naphthylamine derivatives are readily available and the free amine serves as a directing group.

Abstract
A palladium and iodine-cocatalyzed 5-exo-dig aza-thiocyclization of 8-alkynylnaphthalen-1-amines for the synthesis of (E)-2-alkylene-1,2-dihydrobenzo[cd]indole thioethers is reported. As a result of broad reaction scope, simple operation, mild conditions, and high stereoselectivity and regioselectivity, this reaction should have potential utility in organic synthesis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Rhodanines, as one of the 4-thiazolidinones subtypes, are recognized as privileged heterocycles in medicinal chemistry. The main achievements include the development of drug-like molecules with numerous biological activities as well as approved drugs. Among rhodanines, 5-ene-rhodanines are of special interest, and are often claimed as pan assay interference compounds due to Michael acceptor functionality. Areas covered: Herein, the synthetic protocols for rhodanines and their transformation are reviewed. Biological activity is briefly discussed as well as biotargets, mode of actions and optimization directions. Furthermore, the utilization of 5-ene-rhodanines in Michael additions are discussed while both pro and contra arguments have been outlined within medicinal chemistry application. Expert opinion: Rhodanines remain privileged heterocycles in drug discovery. They are accessible building blocks for optimization and transformation into related heterocycles, simplified analogues and fused heterocycles with a thiazolidine framework. Michael acceptor functionality, as well as the thesis about low selectivity towards biotargets of rhodanines, must be confirmed experimentally and it cannot be based on just the presence of conjugated α,β-unsaturated carbonyl. Moreover, the positive aspects of Michael acceptors must be considered as well as their multitarget properties. New criteria for target affinity must be found. In conclusion, rhodanines are generally not problematic per se.
