Solvent-dependent self-assembly and morphological transition of low-molecular-weight azobenzene organogel

Preparation of two amphiphilic dendritic small molecule gelators based on poly (aryl ether) modified silica-based chromatographic stationary phases and molecular shape recognition for shape-restricted isomers

Geometric isomers tend to have similar polarities and differ only in molecular shape. Vigorously developing new stationary phases to meet the requirements for the separation of isomers that have similar physicochemical properties is still an urgent topic in separation science. Poly (arylene ether)-based dendrimers are known for their multifunctional branched peripheral structures and high self-assembly properties. In this paper, two amphiphilic dendritic organic small molecule gelling agents based on poly (aryl ether), PAE-ANT and PAE-PA, were prepared and conjugated to the silica surface. SiO2@PAE-ANT and SiO2@PAE-PA were used as HPLC stationary phases for the separation of non-polar shape-restricted isomers. Both stationary phases have very high molecular shape selectivity for isomers such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), tocopherols and carotenoids. Separation of cis-trans geometric isomers such as diethylstilbestrol and polar compounds such as monosubstituted benzenes and anilines can also be achieved. These two columns offer more flexible selectivity and higher separation performance than commercial C18 and phenyl columns. There is a difference in molecular shape selectivity between the two stationary phases for the same analyte test probes. SiO2@PAE-ANT showed slightly better linear selectivity for non-polar shape-restricted isomers compared to SiO2@PAE-PA with Janus-type PAE-PA bonding phase. This separation behavior may be attributed to the ordered spatial structure formed by the gel factor on the surface of the stationary phase and the combined effect of multiple weak interaction centers (hydrophobic, hydrophilic, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions). It was also possible to separate nucleoside and nucleobase strongly polar compounds well in the HILIC mode, suggesting that hydrophilic groups in PAE-ANT and PAE-PA are involved in the interactions, reflecting their amphiphilic nature. The results show that the ordered gelation of dendritic organic small molecule gelators on the SiO2 surface, along with multiple carbonyl-π, π-π and other interactions, play a crucial role in the separating shape-restricted isomers. The integrated and ordered functional groups serve as the primary driving force behind the exceptionally high molecular shape selectivity of SiO2@PAE-ANT and SiO2@PAE-PA phases. Alterations in the structure of dendritic organic small molecule gelators can impact both molecular orientation and recognition ability, while changes in the type of functional groups influences the separation mechanism of shape-restricted isomers.

Luminescent silicon nanocrystals appended with photoswitchable azobenzene units

Confinement of multiple azobenzene chromophores covalently linked at the surface of luminescent silicon nanocrystals preserves the photoswitching behavior and modulates the nanocrystal polarity. Concomitantly, the thermal Z→E isomerization is strongly accelerated and the nanocrystal luminescence is reduced by an energy transfer process resulting in photosensitized E→Z isomerization.

Reduction of structural hierarchy translates into variable influence on the performance of boron nitride aerogel

The rise of ceramic aerogel offers traditional ceramics a new window. Alongside the emerging prospects, what is open to explore includes the elegant design of a ceramic aerogel with tailorable inner organizations, what would occur when complex hierarchy exists in such an already intricate system, and how the properties get influenced as the complexity fades. Borrowing the wisdom from supramolecular world, we exquisitely transform BN aerogel from a complex hierarchy to a flatten microstructure based on solvent-induced morphology switch of its supramolecular precursor gel. Such reduction in structural hierarchy has insignificant effect on the thermal conductivity (∼0.027 W/(m·K)) but shifts the wettability from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity and occasions nearly 3-fold difference in ion adsorption rate, as exemplified by lead ions. This work may promote the understanding of special hierarchy existing in delicate systems and inspire other attempts to harness the functionality of aerogels by manipulating structural hierarchy.

Supramolecular fibrous gels with helical pitch tunable by polarity of alcohol solvents

A sugar-based, low-molecular-weight gelator 16AG, can gelatinize primary alcohols by forming supramolecular fibers. We obtained non-helical, tape-like fibers in methanol and ethanol but helical fibers in alcohols with at least three carbons. The pitch of the helical fibers became shorter with increasing carbon number.

Structure–property relationship of novel supramolecular gels based on coumarins

LMWGs based on coumarins could form supramolecular gels with unusual mechanical properties explained by its interactions at theoretical level.

Controlled Sol-Gel and Diversiform Nanostructure Transitions by Photoresponsive Molecular Switching of Tetraphenylethene- and Azobenzene-Functionalized Organogelators

The implementation of stimuli-responsive materials with dynamically controllable features has long been an important objective that challenges chemists in the materials science field. We report here the synthesis and characterization of [2]rotaxanes (R1 and R1-b) with a molecular shuttle and photoresponsive properties. Axles T1 and T1-b were found to be highly efficient and versatile organogelators toward various nonpolar organic solvents, especially p-xylene, with critical gelation concentrations as low as 0.67 and 0.38 w/v %, respectively. The two molecular stations of switchable [2]rotaxanes (R1 and R1-b) can be revealed or concealed by t-butylcalix[4]arene macrocycle, thus inhibiting the gelation processes of the respective axles T1 and T1-b through the control of intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. The sol-gel transition of axles T1 and T1-b could be achieved by the irradiation of UV-visible light, which interconverted between the extended and contracted forms. Interestingly, the morphologies of organogels in p-xylene, including flakes, nanobelts, fibers, and vesicles depending on the molecular structures of axles T1 and T1-b, were induced by UV-visible light irradiation. Further studies revealed that acid-base-controllable and reversible self-assembled nanostructures of these axle molecules were mainly constructed by the interplay of multi-noncovalent interactions, such as intermolecular π-π stacking, CH-π, and intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. Surprisingly, our TPE molecular systems (R1, R1-b, T1, and T1-b) are nonemissive in their aggregated states, suggesting that not only fluorescence resonance energy transfer but also aggregation-caused quenching may have been functioning. Finally, the mechanical strength of these organogels in various solvents was monitored by rheological experiments.

A redox-responsive organogel based on a selenium-containing low molecular mass gelator

A redox-responsive low molecular mass gelator (Chol-Se) with selenium as its redox-active center was designed and synthesized. Responsive transformation of Chol-Se in ethyl acetate between the gelation and solution was achieved.

Self-assembly of surface functionalized amphiphilic carbon dots: tuning in morphological manifestations

Despite the continuous surge of interest in supramolecular chemistry, the design and synthesis of building blocks to develop diverse examples of self-assemblies is still challenging. During the past decades, formation of self-assemblies such as micelles, vesicles, and gels with a fibril network using amphiphiles has been investigated at length. Considering the increasing applications of these self-aggregates across the scientific domain, it is crucial to adopt an alternative strategy for the preparation of self-aggregates using a new building block that has been applied in diverse domains. With this aim, surface functionalized carbon dots (CDs) with varying aliphatic/aromatic (cholesteryl, palmitoyl, naphthyl) substitutions linked with spacers such as ethylenediamine, p-phenylenediamine, 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) were developed. The surface passivated CDs formed self-assemblies in dimethylsulfoxide-water (DMSO-H₂O, 2 : 1, v/v). The roles of surface functionalities and spacer units in the formation of self-assemblies using the synthesized CDs were investigated by microscopic and spectroscopic studies. Progressive morphological transition was found from vesicle-to-fiber in DMSO-H₂O (2 : 1, v/v) which was dependent on surface passivating substitutions of the CDs from cholesteryl to naphthyl to palmitoyl. Together with the exclusive formation of self-assemblies using amphiphilic CDs, the present study enabled the tuning of self-organization behaviour of the CD by alteration of its surface functionality.

A Natural Glycyrrhizic Acid-Tailored Light-Responsive Gelator

The construction of stimuli-responsive materials by using naturally occurring molecules as building blocks has received increasing attention owing to their bioavailability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Herein, a symmetrical azobenzene-functionalized natural glycyrrhizic acid (trans-GAG) was synthesized and could form stable supramolecular gels in DMSO/H₂ O and MeOH/H₂ O. Owing to trans-cis isomerization, this gel exhibited typical light-responsive behavior that led to a reversible gel-sol transition accompanied by a variation in morphology and rheology. Additionally, this trans-GAG gel displayed a distinct injectable self-healing property and outstanding biocompatibility. This work provides a simple yet rational strategy to fabricate stimuli-responsive materials from naturally occurring, eco-friendly molecules.
