Abstract
The condensation of aromatic dialdehydes with chiral diamines, such as 1,2-trans-diaminocyclohexane, leads to various enantiopure or meso-type macrocyclic Schiff bases, including [2 + 2], [3 + 3], [4 + 4], [6 + 6] and [8 + 8] condensation products. Unlike most cases of macrocycle synthesis, the [3 + 3] macrocycles of this type are sometimes obtained in high yields by direct condensation without a metal template. Macrocycles of other sizes from this family can often be selectively obtained in high yields by a suitable choice of metal template, solvent, or chirality of the building blocks. In particular, the application of a cadmium(II) template results in the expansion of the [2 + 2] macrocycles into giant [6 + 6] and [8 + 8] macrocycles. These imine macrocycles can be reduced to the corresponding macrocyclic amines which can act as hosts for the binding of multiple cations or multiple anions.

Enantiopure
aziridin-2-yl methanols 3–7 are used
as highly effective sensors for enantiodiscrimination
of α-racemic carboxylic acids containing tertiary or quaternary
stereogenic centers. A linear correlation between theoretical and
observed % ee values for CSA-3 and enantiomerically enriched
samples of mandelic acid has been observed, indicating the possible
application of these compounds in the ee determination. The free NH
and OH groups in 3–7 ensure good
recognition.

Abstract
Supramolecular chirality may emerge from self-assembly processes to yield architectures that differ only in the topological arrangement of their constituent parts. Since the properties of the resulting enantiomeric assemblies are identical, purification and characterisation can be challenging. Here, we have examined the hypothesis that the intrinsic chirality of a protein nanopore can be exploited to detect supramolecular chirality. Transient blockages in the ion current flowing through a single membrane-spanning α-haemolysin nanopore were shown to discriminate between M4L6 tetrahedral coordination cages of opposing chiralities. The single-molecule nature of the approach facilitated direct access to the rates of association and dissociation with the nanopore, which allowed the concentrations of the enantiomeric supramolecular assemblies to be determined in situ. Thus, we have established that a protein nanopore can be used to discriminate the chiral topologies of supramolecular assemblies, even when they are too large to fully enter the nanopore.

Abstract
Nine new (+)-dehydroabietylimidazolium salts were synthesised and studied as chiral solvating agents for several different racemic aromatic and non-aromatic carboxylate salts. These cationic chiral solvating agents resolve racemic ionic analytes better than non-ionic ones. Bis(dehydroabietylimidazolium) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) gave the best discrimination for the enantiomers of carboxylate salts. Its resolution behaviour was studied by an NMR titration experiment, which indicated 1 : 1 complexation with the racemic analyte. The dehydroabietylimidazolium salts were also useful in enantiomeric excess (ee) determinations, and for the recognition of chirality of racemic aromatic and non-aromatic α-substituted carboxylic acids.

Abstract
Chiral tertiary and quaternary amine solvating agents for NMR spectroscopy were synthesized from the wood resin derivative (+)-dehydroabietylamine (2). The resolution of enantiomers of model compounds [Mosher’s acid (3) and its n-Bu4N salt (4)] (guests) by (+)-dehydroabietyl-N,N-dimethylmethanamine (5) and its ten different ammonium salts (hosts) was studied. The best results with 3 were obtained using 5 while with 4 the best enantiomeric resolution was obtained using (+)-dehydroabietyl-N,N-dimethylmethanaminium bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonimide) (6). The compounds 5 and 6 showed a 1:1 complexation behaviour between the host and guest. The capability of 5 and 6 to recognize the enantiomers of various α-substituted carboxylic acids and their n-Bu4N salts in enantiomeric excess (ee) determinations was demonstrated. A modification of the RES-TOCSY NMR pulse sequence is described, allowing the enhancement of enantiomeric discrimination when the resolution of multiplets is insufficient.

Abstract
Bis(diamido)-bridged basket resorcin[4]arene (all-S)-1 and its (all-R)-1 enantiomer proved able to interact with 2'-deoxycytidine (2) and pyrimidine nucleoside analogs in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution. In such a solvent, the resorcinarene hosts adopt a preferential 1,3-alternate-like conformation, with a larger cavity delimited by two syn 3,5-dimethoxyphenyl moieties, and two external pockets, each delimited by the other 3,5-dimethoxyphenyl group and its diamido arm (the wing). Complexation phenomena were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods, including (1)H NMR DOSY and 1D ROESY experiments, and molecular modeling. Heteroassociation constants of [(all-S)-1·2] and [(all-R)-1·2] diastereoisomeric complexes were obtained from diffusion data by single point measurements, and from nonlinear fitting of 1H NMR chemical shifts. Selective proton relaxation rate measurements allowed us to significantly discriminate the two complexes by identifying two different interaction sites of the guest in the resorcin[4]arene host, depending on its configuration.

Abstract
Chiral hexaazamacrocycles with a trianglamine structure and C(3)-symmetry, containing six ring substituents and twelve stereocenters have been tested as chiral solvating agents (CSAs) for α-substituted carboxylic acids. Excellent results have been obtained with a hexaphenyl-substituted macrocycle. The optimal ratio between the macrocycle and racemic acid, allowing for baseline separation of the enantiomers' signals in the (1)H NMR spectrum, was dependent on the type of acid, in particular on its degree of acidity. The analyte and the CSA could be separated and recovered by a simple acid-base extraction and reused without purification. The conformations of the free and protonated hexaamino macrocycles were inferred by CD spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Chiral diporphyrin receptor 1, which has a macrocyclic cavity to sandwich aromatic guest molecules via double π-π stacking interactions, enabled the naked-eye detection of an aromatic explosive as well as chiral discrimination in NMR.

Abstract
Two armed chiral calix[4]arenes 8-16 functionalized at the lower rim with chiral aminonaphthol units have been prepared and the structures of these receptors characterized by FTIR, (1)H, and (13)C, DEPT and COSY NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The enantioselective recognition of these receptors with various carboxylic acids has been studied by (1)H NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The receptors exhibited different chiral recognition abilities towards the enantiomers of racemic materials and formed 2 : 1 or 1 : 1 complexes between host and guest. It was also demonstrated that chiral calix[4]arenes 9 and 16 could be used as chiral NMR solvating agents to determine the enantiomeric purity of mandelic acid.
