Abstract
How the information obtained from the gas phase experiments can reflect the processes in solution is a crucial question for analytical chemistry, and particularly the selective host-guest recognition mechanisms which are fundamental in biology. Here we combine ElectroSpray Ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and the Collision Induced Dissociation (CID) experiments to the density functional theory to investigate the interaction of acetylcholine and the choline cation with a triphosphonate cavitand. While the relative abundance of the cation complexes in the ESI mass spectrum reflects the preferential capture of the acetylcholine ion over the choline ion by the cavitand in the solution, the gas phase CID measurements indicate that after desolvation the choline cation is the most strongly bound to the host. The experimental results are interpreted by theory that underlines the role of the counterion in the stabilization of the complexes in solution and therefore in the selective recognition of substrates of biological interest.

Abstract
Enantiopure compounds are ubiquitous in the chemical sciences and present a particular interest in the field of molecular recognition and host-guest systems. Indeed, chiral molecular receptors are at the basis of numerous biological recognition processes and have important implications in biochemistry or pharmacology. Chemists have been investigating this field for several decades, which has led to the development of the synthesis of chiral hosts, their enantiomeric differentiation, and the studies of their recognition properties towards important and bio-relevant chiral guest substrates. The design of molecular cages is a rather difficult task that is even more demanding when enantiopure molecules are required. In this review we chose to present the main families of synthetic organic supramolecular cages that have been developed, whose structures contain stereogenic centers or present an inherent chirality, giving rise to chiral supramolecular cages. Particular attention is given to obtaining enantiopure compounds. Their recognition properties are also underlined. A last important aspect of the review is to present how chiroptical spectroscopies can be used to characterize the recognition phenomena displayed by supramolecular cages.

Exclusive recognition of sarcosine in water and urine by a cavitand-functionalized silicon surface. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2012; 109:2263-8. Abstract
A supramolecular approach for the specific detection of sarcosine, recently linked to the occurrence of aggressive prostate cancer forms, has been developed. A hybrid active surface was prepared by the covalent anchoring on Si substrates of a tetraphosphonate cavitand as supramolecular receptor and it was proven able to recognize sarcosine from its nonmethylated precursor, glycine, in water and urine. The entire complexation process has been investigated in the solid state, in solution, and at the solid-liquid interface to determine and weight all the factors responsible of the observed specificity. The final outcome is a Si-based active surface capable of binding exclusively sarcosine. The complete selectivity of the cavitand-decorated surface under these stringent conditions represents a critical step forward in the use of these materials for the specific detection of sarcosine and related metabolites in biological fluids.

Abstract
Inherently chiral phosphonatocavitands with various bridging moieties at their wide rim were synthesized. Optical resolution by chiral HPLC was performed with cavitand 8 to afford enantiopure compounds (+)-8 and (-)-8. The molecular structures of hosts 8 and 12 were determined by X-ray diffraction. The host properties were investigated by (1)H and (31)P NMR spectroscopy. The phosphonatocavitands form inclusion complexes with chiral ammonium neurotransmitters, some presenting enantioselectivity towards the right or left-handed host enantiomers.
