The Phenomenon of Vibrational Circular Dichroism Enhancement: A Systematic Survey of Literature Data

While the intensity of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) signals is commonly 104-105 times smaller than that of corresponding IR signals, several kinds of systems display enhanced VCD spectra with g-values (VCD/IR intensity ratio) above 10-3 and even reaching 5 × 10-2 in some exceptional cases. These systems include transition metal and lanthanide complexes, protein and peptide fibrils, short oligopeptide gels, crystalline compounds, gels and solution aggregates of organic compounds. We review the literature on VCD enhancement, focusing on collecting and analyzing data on enhanced g-values. Special attention is given to the mechanisms proposed to produce these effects.

Analysis of Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra of Peptides: A Generalized Coupled Oscillator Approach of a Small Peptide Model Using VCDtools

Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) is one of the major spectroscopic tools to study peptides. Nevertheless, a full understanding of what determines the signs and intensities of VCD bands of these compounds in the amide I and amide II spectral regions is still far from complete. In the present work, we study the origin of these VCD signals using the general coupled oscillator (GCO) analysis, a novel approach that has recently been developed. We apply this approach to the ForValNHMe model peptide in both α-helix and β-sheet configurations. We show that the intense VCD signals observed in the amide I and amide II spectral regions essentially have the same underlying mechanism, namely, the through-space coupling of electric dipoles. The crucial role played by intramolecular hydrogen bonds in determining VCD intensities is also illustrated. Moreover, we find that the contributions to the rotational strengths, considered to be insignificant in standard VCD models, may have sizable magnitudes and can thus not always be neglected. In addition, the VCD robustness of the amide I and II modes has been investigated by monitoring the variation of the rotational strength and its contributing terms during linear transit scans and by performing calculations with different computational parameters. From these studies-and in particular, the decomposition of the rotational strength made possible by the GCO analysis-it becomes clear that one should be cautious when employing measures of robustness as proposed previously.

Ag(I)-mediated homo and hetero pairs of guanosine and cytidine: monitoring by circular dichroism spectroscopy

Ag(I)-containing compounds are attractive as antibacterial and antifungal agents. The renewed interest in the application of silver(I) compounds has led to the need for detailed knowledge of the mechanism of their action. One of the possible ways is the coordination of Ag(I) to G-C pairs of DNA, where Ag(+) ions form Ag(I)-mediated base pairs and inhibit the transcription. Herein, a systematic chiroptical study on silver(I)-mediated homo and mixed pairs of the C-G complementary-base derivatives cytidine(C) and 5'-guanosine monophosphate(G) in water is presented. Ag(I)-mediated homo and hetero pairs of G and C and their self-assembled species were studied under two pH levels (7.0 and 10.0) by vibrational (VCD) and electronic circular dichroism(ECD). VCD was used for the first time in this field and showed itself to be a powerful method for obtaining specific structural information in solution. Based on results of the VCD experiments, the different geometries of the homo pairs were proposed under pH 7.0 and 10.0. ECD was used as a diagnostic tool to characterize the studied systems and as a contact point between the previously defined structures of the metal or proton mediated pairs of nucleobases and the systems studied here. On the basis of the obtained data, the formation of the self-assembled species of cytidine with a structure similar to the i-motif structure in DNA was proposed at pH 10.0.

Construction of two 3D homochiral frameworks with 1D chiral pores via chiral recognition

The reactions of a pair of enantiomers of macrocyclic nickel(II) complexes with racemic penicillamine generated two 3D hydrogen-bonded homochiral frameworks of {[Ni(f-(SS)-L)](2)(l-pends)(ClO(4))(2)}(n) (Λ-1) and {[Ni(f-(RR)-L)](2)(d-pends) (ClO(4))(2)}(n) (Δ-1). The frameworks possess 1D tubular pores and opposite right/left-handed helical porous surfaces (L = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane; pends(2-) = penicillaminedisulfide anion).
