Abstract
Alkaloids account for some of the most beautiful and biologically active natural products. Although they are usually classified along biosynthetic criteria, they can also be categorized according to certain structural motifs. Amongst these, the α-tertiary amine (ATA), i.e. a tetrasubstituted carbon atom surrounded by three carbons and one nitrogen, is particularly interesting. A limited number of methods have been described to access this functional group and fewer still are commonly used in synthesis. Herein, we review some approaches to asymmetrically access ATAs and provide an overview of alkaloid total syntheses where those have been employed.

Abstract
Olefin metathesis using ruthenium carbene complexes is a useful method in synthetic organic chemistry. Enyne metathesis is also catalyzed by these complexes and various carbo- and heterocycles could be synthesized from the corresponding enynes. Dienyne metathesis, cross enyne metathesis and ring-opening enyne metathesis have been further developed. Various complicated compounds, such as the natural products and the related biologically active substances, could be synthesized using these metatheses reactions. Skeletal reorganization using the transition metals and metallotropic rearrangement are also discussed.

Abstract
The ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of dienynes represents a powerful methodology for the construction of mono- and bicyclic systems containing 1,3-diene functionality. Despite its synthetic potential, the utility of dienyne RCM is significantly reduced due to poor group selectivity. To circumvent this shortcoming, several strategies utilizing steric hindrance, electronic variation, relay metathesis and ring-closure kinetics have been implemented to exert control over the reaction pathways. This article highlights a variety of methods to achieve group-selective enyne RCM of dienynes.

Abstract
Ring closing enyne metathesis to form 10-15-membered rings was achieved by using a tartrate-derived linker to attach ene and yne subunits. The exo/endo selectivity of the ring closure reaction of these substrates was found to be a function of ring size, whereby larger rings (12-15) give endo-products selectively, while smaller rings (5-11) give exo-products. The E/Z selectivity of the resultant macrocyclic 1,3-dienes was not predictable except for 10- and 11-membered rings. However, both the exo/endo-mode selectivity of the ring closure and the E/Z selectivity of the 1,3-dienes were improved by performing these reactions under ethylene atmosphere. The presence of ethylene induces a selective cross metathesis between the alkyne moiety and ethylene to generate an acyclic 1,3-diene which can undergo ring closing diene metathesis between the isolated olefin and the distal monosubstituted double bond of the 1,3-diene to generate exclusively the endo-product with high E-selectivity.

Abstract
This review covers beta-phenylethylamines and isoquinoline alkaloids derived from them, including further products of oxidation, condensation with formaldehyde and rearrangement, some of which do not contain as isoquinoline system, together with napthylisoquinoline alkaloids, which have a different biogenetic origin. The occurrence of the alkaloids with the structures of new bases, together with their reactions and syntheses, are reported. The literature from July 2003 to June 2004 is reviewed, with 145 references cited.
