Abstract
New pyranoid ε-sugar amino acids were designed as building blocks, in which the carboxylic acid and the amine groups were placed in positions C2 and C3 with respect to the tetrahydropyran oxygen atom. By using standard solution-phase coupling procedures, cyclic homooligomers containing pyranoid ε-sugar amino acids were synthesized. Conformation analysis was performed by using NMR spectroscopic experiments, FTIR spectroscopic studies, X-ray analysis, and a theoretical conformation search. These studies reveal that the presence of a methoxy group in the position C4 of the pyran ring produces an important structural change in the cyclodipeptides. When the methoxy groups are present, the structure collapses through interresidue hydrogen bonds between the oxygen atoms of the pyran ring and the amide protons. However, when the cyclodipeptide lacks the methoxy groups, a U-shape structure is adopted, in which there is a hydrophilic concave face with four oxygen atoms and two amide protons directed toward the center of the cavity. Additionally, we found important evidence of the key role played by weak electrostatic interactions, such as the five-membered hydrogen-bonded pseudocycles (C5) between the amide protons and the ether oxygen atoms, in the conformation equilibrium of the macrocycles and in the cyclization step of the cyclic tetrapeptides.

Abstract
A method was developed to synthesize macrocyclic trihydroxamate siderophores using optimized Yamaguchi macrolactonization conditions. The natural ability of siderophores to bind iron(III) was exploited to template the reactions and allowed for rapid reaction rates, high product conversions, and the formation of large macrolactone rings up to 35 atoms. An X-ray structure of a 33-membered macrolactone siderophore-Fe(III) complex is presented.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesized a series of enantiomerically pure (2R,3R)- and (2R,3S)-disubstituted tetrahydropyrans bearing a CH2O spacer group on the side chain at position 2 of the heterocyclic ring. The in vitro antiproliferative activities of the compounds were examined in the human solid tumor cell lines A2780 (ovarian cancer), SW1573 (non-small cell lung cancer), and WiDr (colon cancer). Overall, the results point out the relevance for antiproliferative activity of the distance between the heterocycle and the unsaturated group.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A simple and convenient one-pot protocol for the chemoselective C2-homologation of carbohydrate-derived glycols is described. The method comprises the chemoselective oxidation of the glycol to the corresponding hydroxyaldehyde and the subsequent Wittig alkenylation. In addition, the method does not need selective protective group manipulation, and it is safe, economical, fast (5 to 6 h), and bench-friendly. Its general utility is discussed.
