Abstract
Palladium was immobilized on a highly porous copolymer of 4-vinylpyridine and divinylbenzene (polyHIPE-poly(high internal phase emulsion)) using palladium(II) acetate to obtain PolyPy-Pd with 6.1 wt % or 0.57 mmol Pd/g. The immobilized catalyst was able to catalyze the coupling of iodobenzene and phenylboronic acid in ethylene glycol monomethyl ether/water (3:1) within 4 h at rt and complete conversion was observed when 2.5 mol % of Pd per PhI was used. The reaction tolerated a wide range of substituents on the aromatic ring. Iodobenzene derivatives with electron-withdrawing substituents showed higher reactivity, while the opposite was true for the phenylboronic acid series. The polyHIPE-supported Pd catalyst was also used for the direct conversion of phenylboronic acid to biphenyl through an iodination/coupling reaction sequence. The recyclability of the heterogeneous catalyst was also optimized, and by finding a suitable combination of solvents for the loading of Pd, the reaction, and the isolation of the product, the solid-supported catalyst was completely regenerated and used in the next reaction with the same activity.

Abstract
Stable and isolable alkanethiolate-stabilized Pt nanoparticles (PtNP) were synthesized using the two-phase thiosulfate method with sodium S-alkylthiosulfate as ligand precursor. The mechanistic formation of octanethiolate-capped PtNP (Pt-SC8) from both sodium S-octylthiosulfate and 1-octanethiol ligands was investigated by using 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, which revealed the formation of different Pt complexes as the reaction intermediates. The synthesis using S-octylthiosulfate ligand precursor produced Pt-SC8 in higher yields than that using 1-octanethiol ligand. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by 1H NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from 1H NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy were consistent with the formation of stable and pure alkanethiolate-capped PtNP. TEM images of PtNP confirmed their small average core size (∼1.5 nm) and high monodispersity. The partially poisoned PtNP with thiolate monolayer ligands were further investigated for the hydrogenation of various alkynes to understand the organic ligands-induced geometric and electronic surface properties of colloidal Pt nanoparticle catalysts. The high catalytic activity of activated terminal alkynes, but the significantly low activity of internal alkynes and unactivated terminal alkynes, were observed under the mild reaction conditions (room temperature and atmospheric pressure). These results indicated that the presence of alkanethiolate ligands could decrease the coordination activity of PtNP surface especially for the bulkier and unactivated substrates.

Abstract
This review article presents advances in cholesterol chemistry since 2000. Various transformations (chemical, enzymatic, electrochemical, etc.) of cholesterol are presented. A special emphasis is given to cholesterol oxidation reactions, but also substitution of the 3β-hydroxyl group, addition to the C5-C6 double bond, C-H functionalization, and C-C bond forming reactions are discussed.

Abstract
The polymer-supported palladium(II) diphenylphosphinoethane complex is a highly active catalyst that could be used for the Stille coupling reaction between aryl iodides and (or) chlorides and organostannanes at room temperature under aerobic conditions. This heterogeneous palladium catalyst is efficient, air-stable, and recyclable.

Abstract
A rapid, one pot and biogenic fabrication of Pd nanoparticles is reported. Pd nanoparticles of size below 5 nm size are synthesized using the dried leaf powder of Anacardium occidentale. Rapid reduction results in the formation of spherical particles. The nanoparticles are characterized by XRD, TEM, UV-visible and FTIR analysis. The absorption spectra have continua which are characteristic of Pd nanoparticles. The broad nature of the XRD pattern arising due to reflections from the (111), (200), (220), (311) and (222) planes indicate crystallinity of the nanoparticles with face centered cubic (fcc) structure. The morphology and shape of the nanoparticles are obtained by analyzing TEM images. Most of the nanoparticles are spherical with size in the range 2.5 and 4.5 nm. FTIR spectra of dried Pd nanoparticles, native and treated dried leaf powder have been analyzed to find out the biomolecule responsible for the reduction of Pd(2+) and capping of the palladium nanoparticles. The possible mechanism of formation of the nanoparticles is suggested.

Abstract
A brief summary of selected pioneering and mechanistic contributions in the field of carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions with palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) in ionic liquids (ILs) is presented. Five exemplary model systems using the Pd-NPs/ILs approach are presented: Heck, Suzuki, Stille, Sonogashira and Ullmann reactions which all have in common the use of ionic liquids as reaction media and the use of palladium nanoparticles as reservoir for the catalytically active palladium species.

Abstract
Industrial catalysts are typically made of nanosized metal particles, carried by a solid support. The extremely small size of the particles maximizes the surface area exposed to the reactant, leading to higher reactivity. Moreover, the higher the number of metal atoms in contact with the support, the better the catalyst performance. In addition, peculiar properties have been observed for some metal/metal oxide particles of critical sizes. However, thermal stability of these nanostructures is limited by their size; smaller the particle size, the lower the thermal stability. The ability to fabricate and control the structure of nanoparticles allows to influence the resulting properties and, ultimately, to design stable catalysts with the desired characteristics. Tuning particle sizes provides the possibility to modulate the catalytic activity. Unique and unexpected properties have been observed by confining/embedding metal nanoparticles in inorganic channels or cavities, which indeed offers new opportunities for the design of advanced catalytic systems. Innovation in catalyst design is a powerful tool in realizing the goals of more green, efficient and sustainable industrial processes. The present Review focuses on the catalytic performance of noble metal- and non precious metal-based embedded catalysts with respect to traditional impregnated systems. Emphasis is dedicated to the improved thermal stability of these nanostructures compared to conventional systems.
