Synthesis of bis(pyrrol-2-yl)arenes by Pd-catalyzed cross coupling

Quinoxaline-fused octaphyrin(2.0.0.0.2.0.0.0). A rudimentary chemosensor

A quinoxaline-fused octaphyrin(2.0.0.0.2.0.0.0) was synthesized by the FeCl₃-induced oxidative coupling of an α-free quinoxaline-fused tetrapyrrole. This macrocycle adopts a figure-of-eight conformation in the solid state and acts as a rudimentary chemosensor in solution. The Lewis basic anions fluoride and hydroxide induce a colour change via a deprotonation mechanism.

3,6-Carbazoylene Octaphyrin (1.0.0.0.1.0.0.0) and Its Bis-BF2 Complex

3,6-Carbazole precursors were used to prepare an octaphyrin. The conformation and electronic structure of the system could be modulated through trifluoroacetate (TFA) protonation and BF₂ complexation. The resulting nonaromatic macrocyclic complexes, 2-2TFA and 2-2BF₂, displayed noteworthy photophysical properties. For instance, the diprotonated species 2-2TFA showed a strong panchromic absorption up to 800 nm, while the bis-BF₂-chelated dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-like complex 2-2BF₂ exhibited an intense visible absorption feature (ε_535nm = 2.1 × 10⁵ M^-1 cm^-1), as well as a relatively red-shifted emission at 640 nm characterized by a large Stokes shift. It was found that 2-2BF₂ could be used to construct a high-quality organic microlaser that functions under optical pumping. The present study highlights the potential utility of expanded porphyrins as possible laser dyes.

Carbazole-Containing Carbadecaphyrins: Non-aromatic Expanded Porphyrins that Undergo Proton-Triggered Conformational Changes

A pair of meso-unsubstituted expanded carbaporphyrins containing two carbazole moieties were prepared in high isolated yields (82 and 76 %, respectively). The two macrocycles, namely 3 and 4, differ with respect to their substitution at the carbazole N-atoms i. e. by H and i-Bu, respectively. As prepared in their free-base forms, macrocycles 3 and 4 adopt figure-of-eight conformations and are best characterized as 40 π-electron, non-aromatic species possessing a decaphyrin(1.1.0.0.0.1.1.0.0.0) skeleton. Protonation of 3 with either trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) or perchloric acid (HClO₄ ) produces a parallelogram-shaped structure. A similar structure is produced when N-functionalized system 4 is treated with TFA. In contrast, protonation of 4 with HClO₄ leads it to adopt a twisted Möbius strip-like structure in the solid state, thus allowing access to three distinct conformational states as a function of the conditions.

Solvent-Controlled Self-Assembled Oligopyrrolic Receptor

We report a fully organic pyridine-tetrapyrrolic U-shaped acyclic receptor 10, which prefers a supramolecular pseudo-macrocyclic dimeric structure (10)₂ in a less polar, non-coordinating solvent (e.g., CHCl₃). Conversely, when it is crystalized from a polar, coordinating solvent (e.g., N,N-dimethylformamide, DMF), it exhibited an infinite supramolecular one-dimensional (1D) “zig-zag” polymeric chain, as inferred from the single-crystal X-ray structures. This supramolecular system acts as a potential receptor for strong acids, e.g., p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA), methane sulfonic acid (MSA), H₂SO₄, HNO₃, and HCl, with a prominent colorimetric response from pale yellow to deep red. The receptor can easily be recovered from the organic solution of the host–guest complex by simple aqueous washing. It was observed that relatively stronger acids with pK_a < −1.92 in water were able to interact with the receptor, as inferred from ¹H NMR titration in tetrahydrofuran-d₈ (THF-d₈) and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopic titrations in anhydrous THF at 298 K. Therefore, this new dynamic supramolecular receptor system may have potentiality in materials science research.

Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties of Linear Trinuclear CuII and NiII Complexes of Porphyrin Analogues Embedded with Binaphthol Units

A porphyrin analogue embedded with (S)-1,1′-bi-2-naphthol units was synthesized without reducing optical purity of the original binaphthol unit. This new macrocyclic ligand provides the hexaanionic N4O4 coordination environment that enables a linear array of three metal ions. That is, it provides the square planar O4 donor set for the central metal site and the distorted square planar N2O2 donor set for the terminal metal sites. In fact, a CuII3 complex with a Cu(1)–Cu(2) distance of 2.910 Å, a Cu(1)–Cu(2)–Cu(1′) angle of 174.7°, and a very planar Cu2O2 diamond core was obtained. The variable-temperature 1H-NMR study of the CuII3 complex showed increasing paramagnetic shifts for the naphthyl protons as temperature increased, which suggests strong antiferromagnetic coupling of CuII ions. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility indicated antiferromagnetic coupling both for the CuII3 complex (J = −434 cm−1) and for the NiII3 complex (J = −49 cm−1). The linear (L)M(µ-OR)2M(µ-OR)2M(L) core in a rigid macrocycle cavity made of aromatic components provides robust metal complexes that undergo reversible ligation at the apical sites of the central metal.

Deprotection of a benzyl unit induces a 22π aromatic macrocycle of 3-oxypyripentaphyrin(0.1.1.1.0) with strong NIR absorption

We report aromaticity switching from a 6π pyridine ring to a 22π macrocyclic ring of 3-oxypyripentaphyrin(0.1.1.1.0). This system has potential applications in photodynamic therapy owing to macrocyclic aromaticity being selectively induced by protecting group removal and strong absorption bands produced in the NIR region especially in methanol.

Facile Synthesis of NH-Free 5-(Hetero)Aryl-Pyrrole-2-Carboxylates by Catalytic C-H Borylation and Suzuki Coupling

A convenient two-step preparation of NH-free 5-aryl-pyrrole-2-carboxylates is described. The synthetic route consists of catalytic borylation of commercially available pyrrole-2-carboxylate ester followed by Suzuki coupling without going through pyrrole N–H protection and deprotection steps. The resulting 5-aryl substituted pyrrole-2-carboxylates were synthesized in good- to excellent yields. This synthetic route can tolerate a variety of functional groups including those with acidic protons on the aryl bromide coupling partner. This methodology is also applicable for cross-coupling with heteroaryl bromides to yield pyrrole-thiophene, pyrrole-pyridine, and 2,3’-bi-pyrrole based bi-heteroaryls.

Dipyrrolylnaphthyridine-based Schiff-base cryptands and their selective gas adsorption properties

Presented here is the synthesis of three new Schiff-base cryptands, 4–6. Dynamic covalent imine bond formation via the condensation of a dialdehyde (7 or 8) with two different tris-amines allowed for the preparation of 4–6 in 84%, 80% and 83% yield, respectively. These systems were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectra, and, in the case of 5, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These cages act as selective CO[Formula: see text] gas adsorbing materials in the solid state.

Self-Assembled Cagelike Receptor That Binds Biologically Relevant Dicarboxylic Acids via Proton-Coupled Anion Recognition

We report here a fully organic, self-assembled dimeric receptor, constructed from acyclic naphthyridyl-polypyrrolic building blocks. The cagelike dimer is stable in the solid state, in solution, and in gas phase, as inferred from X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic analyses. This system acts as a receptor for oxalic acid, maleic acid, and malonic acid in the solid state and in THF solution. In contrast, acetic acid, propionic acid, adipic acid, and succinic acid, with pK_a values > ca. 2.8, were not bound effectively within the cagelike cavity. It is speculated that oxalic acid, maleic acid, and malonic acid serve to protonate the naphthyridine moieties of the host, which then favors binding of the corresponding carboxylate anions via hydrogen-bonding to the pyrrolic NH protons. The present naphthyridine-polypyrrole dimer is stable under acidic conditions, including in the presence of 100 equiv trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA), H₂SO₄, and HCl. However, disassembly may be achieved by exposure to tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF). Washing with water then regenerates the cage. This process of assembly and disassembly could be repeated >20 times with little evidence of degradation. The reversible nature of the present system, coupled with its dicarboxylic acid recognition features, leads us to suggest it could have a role to play in effecting the controlled "capture" and "release" of biologically relevant dicarboxylic acids.

Synthesis of α,α’-linked penta- and septaheterocycles by tandem Suzuki coupling

The controlled synthesis of oligoaromatics can provide materials of wide utility. Here, we describe the preparation of higher order oligoheterocycles via a tandem Suzuki cross-coupling protocol. This method has allowed for the iterative construction of fluorescent [Formula: see text],[Formula: see text]-linked penta- and septaheterocyclic systems with modification of the terminal moiety allowing for fine-tuning of the emission features.

An Acid-Responsive Single Trichromatic Luminescent Dye That Provides Pure White-Light Emission

A novel acid‐responsive single trichromatic luminescent dye capable of emitting pure white light (WL) is reported. A newly designed p‐phenylene‐bridged bipyrrole bearing N‐alkylimino groups (1 a) specifically provides WL emission upon mixing with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in a CH₂Cl₂ solution. The emission originates from the trichromatic luminescent behavior of 1 a upon protonation of the imino groups. The blue‐light‐emitting 1 a exhibits dramatic color changes in fluorescence to orange and green upon mono‐ and diprotonation, respectively, providing a wide emission band in the range of λ=400–800 nm that provide WL when the compound is in a dynamic equilibrium between the three states. The sample also exhibits low self‐absorption of the emitted light and a high fluorescence quantum yield upon excitation with UV light.

2,2'-Bipyrrole-Based Porphyrinoids

A large number of porphyrinoids containing 2,2'-bipyrrole subunits have appeared since they were originally found as a component of sapphyrin and corrole, and it was found that the bipyrrole subunit endowed macrocycles with specific geometric features and electronic properties. Synthetic methods for bipyrrole-containing precursors for porphyrinoid are summarized in this review; these include coupling reactions of pyrrole rings, pyrrole ring-forming reactions leading directly to bipyrrole units, and synthetic reactions for oligopyrrolic compounds. Some hybrid oligopyrroles having nonpyrrole (hetero)aromatic ring(s) are also included. This review also describes porphyrinoids composed of bipyrrole subunits. Interesting electronic properties derived from strong cyclo-π-conjugation are highlighted in the bipyrrole-based porphyrinoids with or without meso-like carbons. Anion-binding chemistry is one of the main topics for bipyrrole-based macrocycles with less efficient or deficient cyclo-π-conjugation, such as those linked with electronically localized aromatic ring(s), with sp³ carbon(s), and with amido or imine connection(s). The principal concern in this review is porphyrinoids of relatively large ring size, composed of more than five units of pyrroles and (hetero)aromatic substitutes in total, and so bipyrrole-based porphyrinoids up to five pyrrolic units, such as corroles, porphycenes, sapphyrins, and smaragdyrin, will not be covered here except for some special cases.

Synthesis of 1,4-Dicarbonyl Compounds from Silyl Enol Ethers and Bromocarbonyls, Catalyzed by an Organic Dye under Visible-Light Irradiation with Perfect Selectivity for the Halide Moiety over the Carbonyl Group

We report the visible-light-induced radical coupling reaction of silyl enol ethers with α-bromocarbonyl compounds to give 1,4-dicarbonyls. The reaction was effectively accelerated using an inexpensive organic dye (eosin Y) as a photoredox catalyst. 1,4-Dicarbonyl compounds alone were afforded, without the generation of carbonyl adducts of the α-halocarbonyls, which are usually generated in the presence of fluoride anions or Lewis acids. A variety of silyl enol ethers, α-bromoketones, α-bromoesters, and α-bromoamides were applied to this system to produce the coupling compounds.

One-handed single helicates of dinickel(II) benzenehexapyrrole-α,ω-diimine with an amine chiral source

Benzenehexapyrrole-α,ω-dialdehyde, composed of a pair of formyltripyrrole units with a 1,3-phenylene linker, was metallated to give dinuclear single-stranded helicates. X-ray studies of the bis-nickel(II) complex showed a helical C2 form with a pair of helical-metal coordination planes of a 3N+O donor set. The terminal aldehyde was readily converted into the imine by optically active amines, whereby helix-sense bias was induced. Bis-nickel(II) and bis-palladium(II) complexes of the benzenehexapyrrole-α,ω-diimines were studied to show that an enantiomer pair of the helical C2 form are interchanged by slow flipping of each coordination plane and fast rotation around the C(benzene)C(pyrrole) bond. The helical screw in the bis-nickel(II) complexes was biased to one side in more than 95 % diastereoselectivity, which was achieved by using a variety of optically active amines, such as (R)-1-cyclohexylethylamine, (S)-1- phenylethylamine, L-Phe(OEt) (Phe=phenylalanine), and (R)-valinol. The nickel complexes showed much better diastereoselectivity than the corresponding palladium complexes.

Cyclo[m]pyridine[n]pyrroles: hybrid macrocycles that display expanded π-conjugation upon protonation

Novel hybrid cyclo[m]pyridine[n]pyrroles have been synthesized using Suzuki coupling. Their NMR and optical spectroscopic features and solid state structural parameters provide support for the proposal that these species are best described as locally aromatic compounds devoid of long-range intersubunit conjugation. However, an extension of the π-conjugation in the macrocycles can be realized through protonation, as inferred from optical spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction-based structural studies.

Selective iodinated dipyrrolyldiketone BF2 complexes as potential building units for oligomeric systems

Selective iodination at the alpha-pyrrole positions of dipyrrolyldiketone BF(2) complexes is a key procedure to afford mono- and bisiodinated derivatives as the starting materials of the coupling reactions for various utility molecules and covalently linked oligomer systems. Iodination can also be applied to the phenylene-bridging receptor dimer to obtain the derivatives selectively iodinated at the terminal alpha-pyrrole position(s).
