Abstract
Based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods with integral equation formula polarized continuum model (IEFPCM), the fluorescent behavior and recognizing mechanism of probe N'-((1-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)methylene)isoquinoline-3-carbohydrazide (NHMI) for Al3+/Mg2+ ion were investigated in more detail. Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process in probe NHMI occurs in the stepwise pattern. The proton H5 of enol structure (E1) firstly moves from O4 to N6 to form single proton-transfer (SPT2) structure, and then the proton H2 of SPT2 transfers from N1 to N3 to form the stable double proton-transfer (DPT) structure. Subsequently, the transformation from DPT to its isomer (DPT1) induces the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process. Two non-emissive TICT states (TICT1 and TICT2) were obtained, and TICT2 state quenches the fluorescence observed in the experiment. With the addition of aluminum (Al3+) or magnesium (Mg2+) ion, TICT process is prohibited by the coordination interaction between NHMI and Al3+/Mg2+, and the strong fluorescent signal is turned on. For probe NHMI, the twisted C-N single bond of acylhydrazone part leads to the TICT state. This sensing mechanism may inspire researchers to develop new probes from a different direction.

Abstract
Azocalixarenes functionalized with cation binding sites are popular chromoionophores due to the ease of synthesis and the large complexation-induced shifts of their absorption band that originate from an azo-phenol-quinone-hydrazone tautomerism. Despite their extensive use, however, a thorough investigation of the structure of their metal complexes has not been reported. We describe herein the synthesis of a new azocalixarene ligand (2) and the study of its complexation properties with the Ca2+ cation. Through a combination of solution (1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies) and solid-state (X-ray diffractometry) techniques, we demonstrate that metal complexation induces a shift of the tautomeric equilibration towards the quinone-hydrazone form, while deprotonation of the complex results in the reversion to the azo-phenol tautomer.

Abstract
SBOD (sodium (E)-2-(3-[5-bromothiophen-2-yl]-3-oxoprop-1-en-1-yl)-4,6-dichlorophenolate) was designed and synthesized as a chalcone-based fluorescent turn-on chemosensor for Mg2+ and Cd2+ . SBOD selectively detected Mg2+ and Cd2+ through the increase in effective fluorescence. Detection limits of SBOD for Mg2+ and Cd2+ were calculated to be 3.8 μM and 2.9 μM, respectively. The binding modes of SBOD for Mg2+ and Cd2+ were determined to be 1:1 by ESI-MS and Job plot. Association mechanisms for SBOD to Mg2+ and Cd2+ were illustrated by ESI-MS, UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and calculations.

Abstract
A new photochromic diarylethene derivative with a 4-methylphenol unit has been designed and synthesized. It displayed distinct photochromism and fluorescent ''turn on'' features to Mg2+ in acetonitrile solution. With the addition of Mg2+, there was an obvious increase of fluorescent emission intensity at 552 nm, accompanied by a clear change of fluorescent color from dark purple to green. Meantime, the 1 : 1 stoichiometry between the derivative and Mg2+ was verified by Job's plot and HRMS. Furthermore, the sensor was successfully applied in the detection of Mg2+ in practical samples. Moreover, based on the multiple-responsive fluorescence switching behaviors, it also could be used to construct a molecular logic circuit with UV/vis lights and Mg2+/EDTA as input signals and the emission at 552 nm as the output signal.

Abstract
Magnesium ions (Mg2+) play essential roles in various physiological and pathological processes, its abnormal homeostasis in cells is related to many diseases, such as diabetes, neuromuscular disorders, hypertension and other cardiovascular disorders. Investigation on the regulation of magnesium in cellular processes has attracted considerable interest in the past several decades. Among those reported strategies, fluorescent imaging technology has become a powerful and cost-effective tool for the real-time monitoring of magnesium distribution, uptake and trafficking, due to its superior features of high sensitivity and non-invasiveness, as well as excellent spatial and temporal fidelity. Herein, we critically summarize the progresses in the intracellular magnesium detection with fluorescent imaging probes. Our discussion focuses on the recent contributions concerning fluorescent imaging probes for mapping magnesium in biological processes. All the candidates are organized according to their acceptor structures. The sensing mechanisms of fluorescent probes are also highly taken into account. Challenges, trends and prospects of fluorescent imaging technology in magnesium detection are also set forth.

Abstract
A systematic study of a series of diaza-18-crown-6 8-hydroxyquinoline (DCHQ) chemosensors, devoted to Mg(II) ion detection, was performed. Functionalization of DCHQ by peripheral substituents allowed the development of novel all-solid-state optodes via inclusion inside PVC-based polymeric films. The influence on the DCHQ-based optode response of the lipophilic sites functionalization and of the nature of the plasticizer, was investigated. Fluorimetric studies on optodes sensitivity towards a number of different metal cations (Ca2+, Na+, K+, Li+, Co2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Zn2+) and NH4+ were carried out. The results demonstrated the suitability of the DCHQ optodes to perform fast monitoring (<10s) of magnesium (II) ions. Emission light signal was sufficiently brilliant to be captured by a low-cost computer webcam. The phenyl-substituted DCHQ-Ph derivative showed the best performance with a wide range for Mg(II) ion determination between 2.7 × 10-7 and 2.2 × 10-2 mol/L. It was possible, therefore, to determine the concentrations of Mg(II) in commercial fertilizer samples by DCHQ-Ph-based optodes with acceptable results: recoveries of 96.2-104.9% and relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 6) less than 5%. Moreover, in comparison to single sensors, the use of an array composed of five optodes (the ones showing the best performances in the preliminary tests) has allowed to reduce the RSD of magnesium determination in real samples (down to 3.7% with respect to 5.5% for single optodes) and to achieve a detection limit (estimated by s/n = 3 method) as low as 4.6 × 10-7 mol/L.

Abstract
Multiple sensor systems are designed by varying aza-crown ether moiety in silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) for detecting individual Mg(2+), Ca(2+), and Mn(2+) metal ions with significant selectivity and sensitivity. The detection limit of Mg(2+), Ca(2+), and Mn(2+) can reach 1.81, 3.15, and 0.47 μM, respectively. Upon excitation of the SiQDs which are coordinated with aza-crown ethers, the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) takes place from aza-crown ether moiety to the valence band of SiQDs core such that the reduced probability of electron-hole recombination may diminish the subsequent fluorescence. The fluorescence suppression caused by such PET effect will be relieved after selective metal ion is added. The charge-electron binding force between the metal ion and aza-crown ether hinders the PET and thereby restores the fluorescence of SiQDs. The design of sensor system is based on the fluorescence "turn-on" of SiQDs while in search of the appropriate metal ion. For practical application, the sensing capabilities of metal ions in the live cells are performed and the confocal image results reveal their promising applicability as an effective and nontoxic metal ion sensor.

Abstract
The fluorescence behavior of a probe dpa-HC, which has a coumarin derivative that acts as a fluorophore and a dipicolylamine (DPA) unit that functions as a metal ion-recognition site, was investigated with various metal ions in aqueous and several non-aqueous solvents. In aqueous solution, the fluorescence of dpa-HC was enhanced by Zn(2+) and Cd(2+), but was quenched by other metal ions. On the other hand, in an acetonitrile solution, only Mg(2+) enhanced the fluorescence, and the addition of a small amount of water quenched this fluorescence. This dramatic selectivity change is explained by stabilization of a metal-dpa-HC complex due to acetonitrile coordination and ON-OFF switching of the intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from the nitrogen lone pair of DPA to the coumarin derivative.

Abstract
A fluorescent chemosensor (L) for Mg(2+) has been synthesized and characterized, which exhibits turn-on fluorescence response for Mg(2+) only in alcohol solvent (methanol or ethanol) with high sensitivity and selectivity. But in both nonpolar and polar solvents (cyclohexane, DCM, DMSO or MeCN), L showed negligible fluorescent response for Mg(2+). In order to discover the unique phenomenon, optical measurements, liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and a high performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD) of L and L with Mg(2+) ions in solvents were studied. In alcohol solvent, [L+alcohol molecule] was formed and the mechanism aspect of L concerning the remarkable fluorescence response for Mg(2+) has been discussed.

Abstract
A new Mg2+-selective fluorescent probe P was synthesized and characterized. With optimal conditions, the proposed probe P showed good selectivity to Mg2+ compared to other common metal ions, and worked in a wide linear range of 5.0 × 10−7–6.0 × 10−6 M with a detection limit of 1.7 × 10−7 M Mg2+ in ethanol-water solution (9:1, v/v, 20 mM HEPES, pH = 10.0).

Abstract
AbstractA novel azocalix[4]arene derivative, 5,11,17,23-tetrakis[(acetophenone)azo]-25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxycalix[4]arene (APC4), containing acetophenone azo groups at the upper rim was synthesized as a chemosensor. Its binding and sensing properties with alkali and alkaline earth metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+) were investigated by UV-vis spectrophotometric and voltammetric techniques. The stoichiometric ratio and the association constant were determined spectrophotometrically as 1:1 and (1.94±0.31)×105 L mol−1 for the complex between Mg2+ and the chemosensor, respectively. Moreover, it was shown that the interaction between Mg2+ and the APC4 occurred by means of the phenol groups at the lower rim by voltammetric methods. The results of spectrophotometric and voltammetric experiments showed that the chromogenic chemosensor has high selectivity towards Mg2+ among the other used metal ions, especially the interfering Ca2+ ion.
