Abstract
A different type of MnO2-induced oxidative cyclization of dihydrotriazines has been developed. These dihydrotriazines are considered as a "formal" Schiff's base. This method provided easy access to naphthofuro-fused triazine via the C-C/C-O oxidative coupling reaction. The reaction sequence comprised the nucleophilic addition of 2-naphthol or phenol to 1,2,4-triazine, followed by oxidative cyclization. The scope and limitations of this novel coupling reaction have been investigated. Further application of the synthesized compound has been demonstrated by synthesizing carbazole-substituted benzofuro-fused triazines. The scalability of the reaction was demonstrated at a 40 mmol load. The mechanistic study strongly suggests that this reaction proceeds through the formation of an O-coordinated manganese complex.

Abstract
Conjugated polymers with strong photophysical properties are used in many applications. A homopolymer (P1) and five new low band gap copolymers based on 4,4'-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) and acceptors 3,6-dithienyldiketopyrrolopyrrole (P2), phthalimide (P3), benzotriazole (P4), 4,7-dithienyl[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5g]quinoxaline (P5), and 2,5-dithienylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazine (P6) were prepared by means of Sonogashira polymerization. The characterization of polymers by using (1) H NMR, absorption, and emission spectroscopy is discussed. All polymers with high molecular weights (Mn ) of 16 000 to 89 000 g mol(-1) showed absorption maxima in the deep-red region (λ=630-760 nm) in solution and exhibited significant redshifts (up to 70 nm) in thin films. Polymers P2, P5, and P6 showed narrow optical band gaps of 1.38, 1.35, and 1.38 eV, respectively, which are significantly lower than that of P1 (1.63 eV). The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the polymers were calculated by using cyclic voltammetry measurements. The LUMO energy levels of BODIPY-based alternating copolymers were independent of the acceptors; this suggests that the major factor that tunes the LUMO energy levels of the polymers could be the BODIPY core. All polymers showed selective and reproducible detection of volatile organic solvents, such as toluene and benzene, which could be used for developing sensors.

Abstract
Three thiophenevinyl substituted one-, two-, and three-branched truxene π-conjugated compounds TS1, TS2 and TS3 have been prepared using a Heck reaction. Their linear absorption, single- and two-photon excited fluorescence were examined. The three analogues emit blue fluorescence at 420 nm. The number of branches has no influence on the position of the absorption maxima of the charge transfer band and fluorescence emitting maxima. However, the molar extinction coefficients of charge transfer band increase almost linearly with the number of branches. The two-photon absorption cross-section of the octupolar three-branched compound TS3 is several times that of the two-branched compound TS2 and one-branched compound TS1.

Abstract
A family of heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone dyes (1-9) linked to different furan, thiazole, (bi)thiophene, and arylthiophene pi-conjugated bridges were synthesized in good yields, and their response toward anions was studied. Acetonitrile solutions of 1-9 show bands in the 326-407 region that are modulated by the electron-donor or -acceptor strength of the heterocyclic systems appended to the phenylthiosemicarbazone moiety. Anions of different shape such as fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, dihydrogen phosphate, hydrogen sulfate, nitrate, acetate, cyanide, and thiocyanate were employed for the recognition studies. From these anions, only fluoride, cyanide, acetate, and dihydrogen phosphate displayed sensing features. Two different effects were observed, (i) a low bathochromic shift of the absorption band due to coordination of the anions with the thiourea protons and (ii) the growth of a new red-shifted band with a concomitant change of the solution from yellow or pale yellow to orange-red due to deprotonation. The extent of each process is a balance between the acidity tendency of the thioureido-NH donors modulated by the donor or acceptor groups in the structure of the receptors and the basicity of the anions. Fluorescence studies were also in agreement with the different effects observed on the UV/vis titrations. Stability constants for the two processes (complex formation + deprotonation) for selected receptors and the anions fluoride and acetate were determined spectrophotometrically using the program HYPERQUAD. Semiempirical calculations to evaluate the hydrogen-donating ability of the dyes and (1)H NMR titrations experiments with fluoride were carried out. A prospective electrochemical characterization of compound 3 in the presence of anions was also performed.
