Kinetic Benchmarking Reveals the Competence of Prenyl Groups in Ring-Closing Metathesis

A series of prenyl-containing malonates are kinetically benchmarked against the standard allyl-containing congeners using a ruthenium benzylidene precatalyst for ring-closing metatheses. The prenyl grouping is found to be a superior acceptor olefin compared to an allyl group in RCM processes with ruthenium alkylidenes derived from terminal alkenes. The prenyl group is also found to be a highly competent acceptor for a ruthenium alkylidene derived from a 1,1-disubstituted olefin in a RCM process.

Synthesis of tricyclic indolizidines from ethyl isocyanoacetate

Tricyclic indolizidines were synthesized in good yields from commercially available ethyl isocyanoacetate by a novel sequential alkylation, thiol-mediated radical cyclization, N-alkylation, and microwave-assisted Pauson-Khand reaction.

Ring-closing enyne metathesis of terminal alkynes with propargylic hindrance

The ring closing enyne metathesis of substrates with propargylic hindrance was investigated, revealing the successful combination of the Stewart-Grubbs catalysts and microwave heating sometimes up to 170 °C for oxacycles. Medium-sized rings were obtained from terminal alkynes previously reputed as reluctant substrates. This unmatched combination was applied to the synthesis of carbocycles and oxacycles. In addition, this is the first report on the use of the Stewart Grubbs catalyst in ring closing enyne metatheses.

Tuneable radical cyclisations: a tin-free approach towards tricyclic and spirocyclic heterocycles via a common precursor

A novel common precursor approach towards both tricyclic and spirocyclic heterocycles is described. Cyclisations are based on thiyl radical/isocyanide methodology and avoid the use of tin.

Synthesis of functionalized indolizidines through Pauson-Khand cycloaddition of 2-allylpyrrolidines

A concise entry to functionalized indolizidine scaffolds through a domino 2-aza-Cope-[3 + 2] dipolar cycloaddition and Pauson-Khand [2 + 2 + 1] cyclization has been accomplished. The process was conducted under mild conditions to afford diverse indolizidine systems as single diastereomers in good overall yields.

Microwave-Assisted Ruthenium-Catalyzed Reactions

Since the first reports on the use of microwave irradiation to accelerate organic chemical transformations, a plethora of papers has been published in this field. In most examples, microwave heating has been shown to dramatically reduce reaction times, increase product yields, and enhance product purity by reducing unwanted side reactions compared with conventional heating methods. The present contribution aims at illustrating the advantages of this technology in homogeneous catalysis by ruthenium complexes and, when data are available, at comparing microwave-heated and conventionally heated experiments. Selected examples refer to olefin metathesis, isomerization reactions, 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions, atom transfer radical reactions, transfer hydrogenation reactions, and H/D exchange reactions.
