Abstract
Cross-coupling reactions are a staple in organic synthesis, especially for C-C bond formation with sp- and sp2-carbon electrophiles. In recent years, the range of accessible C-C bonds has been extended to stereogenic centers which expedites access to greater molecular complexity. However, these reactions predominantly depend upon late transition metal (LTM) catalysts whose cost, toxicity, and/or environmental impact have come under increasing scrutiny and governmental regulation. Here, we report Mn(II)Cl2 complexes alone, or with assistance from copper, catalyze the stereospecific cross-coupling of α-alkoxyalkylstannanes with organic electrophiles with complete retention of configuration.

Abstract
Organobismuthines are an attractive class of organometallic reagents that can be accessed from inexpensive and nontoxic bismuth salts. Triarylbismuthines are particularly interesting due to their air and moisture stability and high functional group tolerance. We report herein a detailed study on the preparation of highly functionalized triarylbismuth reagents by triple functional group manipulation and their use in palladium- and copper-catalyzed C-, N-, and O-arylation reactions.

Abstract
Seven novel tertiary alcohol containing linear HIV-1 protease inhibitors (PIs), decorated at the para position of the benzyl group in the P1' side with (hetero)aromatic moieties, were synthesized and biologically evaluated. To study the inhibition and antiviral activity effect of P1-P3 macrocyclization, 14- and 15-membered macrocyclic PIs were prepared by ring-closing metathesis of the corresponding linear PIs. The macrocycles were more active than the linear precursors and compound 10f, with a 2-thiazolyl group in the P1' position, was the most potent PI of this new series (Ki 2.2 nM, EC50 0.2 μM). Co-crystallized complexes of both linear and macrocyclic PIs with the HIV-1 protease enzyme were prepared and analyzed.

Abstract
An efficient Pd(OAc)2/orotic acid catalytic system has been developed for the Stille cross-coupling reaction. In the presence of Pd(OAc)2 and orotic acid, various halides including aryl iodides, aryl bromides, vinyl bromides, and aryl chlorides were coupled efficiently with aryl- and vinyltin compounds to afford the corresponding biaryls and stilbenes. The high catalytic efficacy of Pd(OAc)2/orotic acid has also been demonstrated.

Abstract
We describe herein an efficient method for the synthesis of unsymmetrically-substituted biphenyls using a sonochemical variation of the Stille coupling, whose results have also been compared with the conventional silent reaction. Ultrasound significantly enhances this useful organometallic transformation affording products in higher yields and in shorter reaction times than non-irradiated reactions. The scope has been explored with a selection of arylstannanes as precursors and, remarkably, no by-products resulting from homo-coupling could be detected.

Abstract
![]()
In an effort to identify a new class of druglike HIV-1
protease
inhibitors, four different stereopure β-hydroxy γ-lactam-containing
inhibitors have been synthesized, biologically evaluated, and cocrystallized.
The impact of the tether length of the central spacer (two or three
carbons) was also investigated. A compound with a shorter tether and
(3R,4S) absolute configuration exhibited
high activity with a Ki of 2.1 nM and
an EC50 of 0.64 μM. Further optimization by decoration
of the P1′ side chain furnished an even more potent HIV-1 protease
inhibitor (Ki = 0.8 nM, EC50 = 0.04 μM). According to X-ray analysis, the new class of
inhibitors did not fully succeed in forming two symmetric hydrogen
bonds to the catalytic aspartates. The crystal structures of the complexes
further explain the difference in potency between the shorter inhibitors
(two-carbon spacer) and the longer inhibitors (three-carbon spacer).
