Abstract
We report a new catalyst design for N-heterocycle synthesis that utilizes an alkene-tethered amide moiety as a directing group for aromatic C-H activation. This tethering directing group strategy is demonstrated in a ruthenium-catalyzed intramolecular alkene hydroarylation with N-aryl acrylamides to form oxindole products.

Abstract
A series of electron-rich arenes were reacted with 1-alkyl or 1-aryl 1′-allyl benzylic alcohols to give the corresponding 1,1′-diarylalkanes, in the presence of Lewis and Brønsted acids as catalysts. In the presence of HBF4, 1,1′-diarylalkanes containing an allylic chain were shown to form tetrahydronaphthalenes through a rearrangement involving spirocyclic intermediates. The mechanism of the cyclization is discussed.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method for the synthesis of 1,1-diarylalkanes via the Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation reaction of electron-rich arenes with cinnamic acid ester derivatives or chalcones is reported. Iron triflate has been found to be the best catalyst for the Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation reaction with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. This reaction afforded β,β-diaryl carbonyl compounds in good yields (65-93%) and with excellent regioselectivities. Remarkably, this method is also compatible with a variety of indoles to provide 3-indolyl-aryl carbonyl compounds in excellent yields. Great efforts have been made to deduce a plausible reaction mechanism based on isotopic labelling experiments.

Abstract
Over the recent years, the nucleophilic manipulation of inactivated carbon-carbon double bonds has gained remarkable credit in the chemical community. As a matter of fact, despite lower reactivity with respect to alkynyl and allenyl counterparts, chemical functionalization of isolated alkenes, via carbon- as well as hetero atom-based nucleophiles, would provide direct access to theoretically unlimited added value of molecular motifs. In this context, homogenous [Au(I)] and [Au(III)] catalysis continues to inspire developments within organic synthesis, providing reliable responses to this interrogative, by combining crucial aspects such as chemical selectivity/efficiency with mild reaction parameters. This review intends to summarize the recent progresses in the field, with particular emphasis on mechanistic details.
