Abstract
In this study, compounds with phenylethynyl (PE) groups introduced at all of the possible positions of the methylene-bridged structure of the 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol backbone (3-PE to 8-PE) were synthesized. Compounds with four or six phenylethynyl groups (3,6-PE, 4,6-PE, 5,6-PE, 6,7-PE, and 3,4,6-PE) were also synthesized. The key reaction for the synthesis of these compounds was the Sonogashira reaction using halogen scaffolds. The new transformation methods include (1) selective bromination of the 5-position of the binaphthyl skeleton and (2) bromination of the 6-position and then iodination of the 4-position, followed by the Sonogashira reaction of iodine at the 4-position and lithiation and protonation of bromine at the 6-position. The optical properties of the compounds were evaluated. The extension of the π system greatly differed depending on the position of the phenylethynyl group. 4-PE, 4,6-PE, and 3,4,6-PE, in which the phenylethynyl groups were introduced in the extended direction of the naphthalene linkage axis, showed longer absorption and emission wavelengths and higher fluorescence quantum yields than the other compounds. In circularly polarized luminescence measurements, 7-PE showed a relatively large glum value, an interesting finding that reverses the sense.

Abstract
1,1'-Bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) has been extensively used as the chirality source in the fields of molecular recognition, asymmetric synthesis, and materials science. The direct electrophilic substitution at the aromatic rings of the optically active BINOL has been developed as one of the most convenient strategies to structurally modify BINOL for diverse applications. High regioselectivity has been achieved for the reaction of BINOL with electrophiles. Depending upon the reaction conditions and substitution patterns, various functional groups can be introduced to the specific positions, such as the 6-, 5-, 4-, and 3-positions, of BINOL. Ortho-lithiation at the 3-position directed by the functional groups at the 2-position of BINOL have been extensively used to prepare the 3- and 3,3'-substituted BINOLs. The use of transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation has also been explored to functionalize BINOL at the 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-positions. These regioselective substitutions of BINOL have allowed the construction of tremendous amount of BINOL derivatives with fascinating structures and properties as reviewed in this article. Examples for the applications of the optically active BINOLs with varying substitutions in asymmetric catalysis, molecular recognition, chiral sensing and materials are also provided.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose the Ni-catalyzed ring-opening C-O functionalization of peri-xanthenoxanthenes using Grignard reagents that forms 8-monofunctionalized binaphthols. 1,2-Bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane was the best ligand for alkylations and ICy for arylation. After mechanistic investigations, we assumed that the reaction proceeds via C-O reduction and subsequent C-O functionalization. To verify the mechanism, the intermediate after reduction was isolated. Moreover, the asymmetric addition, using 8-octylbinaphthol after optical resolution, was studied.

Abstract
C-H trifluoromethanesulfonyloxylation (triflation) of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) derivatives has been established under mild conditions using 1,3-diiodo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DIH) and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH). Up to eight TfO groups can be introduced in a single operation. The resulting highly oxidized BINOL derivatives can be successfully converted to 8,8'-dihydroxy BINOL and bisnaphthoquinone compounds. Mechanistic studies suggested that C-H triflation occurs in the form of an aromatic substitution reaction via the in situ formation of a radical cation.

Abstract
A single crystal of pyrenylsumanene was found to exhibit both columnar and herringbone crystal packing. The sumanene moieties form unidirectional columnar structures based on π–π stacking while the pyrene moieties generate herringbone structures due to CH–π interactions. The absorption and emission maxima of pyrenylsumanene were both red-shifted relative to those of sumanene and pyrene, owing to the extension of π-conjugation. Monomer emission with high quantum yield (0.82) was observed for pyrenylsumanene in solution, while excimer-type red-shifted emission was evident in the crystalline phase.
