Metal-free oxidation of benzyl amines to imines

Marriage of Peroxides and Nitrogen Heterocycles: Selective Three-Component Assembly, Peroxide-Preserving Rearrangement, and Stereoelectronic Source of Unusual Stability of Bridged Azaozonides

Stable bridged azaozonides can be selectively assembled via a catalyst-free three-component condensation of 1,5-diketones, hydrogen peroxide, and an NH-group source such as aqueous ammonia or ammonium salts. This procedure is scalable and can produce gram quantities of bicyclic stereochemically rich heterocycles. The new azaozonides are thermally stable and can be stored at room temperature for several months without decomposition and for at least 1 year at -10 °C. The chemical stability of azaozonides was explored for their subsequent selective transformations including the first example of an aminoperoxide rearrangement that preserves the peroxide group. The amino group in aminoperoxides has remarkably low nucleophilicity and does not participate in the usual amine alkylation and acylation reactions. These observations and the 15 pK_a units decrease in basicity in comparison with a typical dialkyl amine are attributed to the strong hyperconjugative n_N→σ*_C-O interaction with the two antiperiplanar C-O bonds. Due to the weakness of the complementary n_O→σ*_C-N donation from the peroxide oxygens (a consequence of "inverse α-effect"), this interaction depletes electron density from the NH moiety, protects it from oxidation, and makes it similar in properties to an amide.

Reframing primary alkyl amines as aliphatic building blocks

While primary aliphatic amines are ubiquitous in natural products, they are traditionally considered inert to substitution chemistry. This review highlights historical and recent advances in the field of aliphatic deamination chemistry which demonstrate these moieties can be harnessed as valuable C(sp3) synthons. Cross-coupling and photocatalyzed transformations proceeding through polar and radical mechanisms are compared with oxidative deamination and other transition metal catalyzed reactions.

Metal free biomimetic deaminative direct C-C coupling of unprotected primary amines with active methylene compounds

An unprecedented direct C-C coupling reaction of unprotected primary amines with active methylene compounds is reported. The reaction involves a biomimetic deamination of amines which was achieved under conditions free of metallic reagents and strong oxidizing agents. A wide range of primary amines was reacted with different active methylene compounds to provide structurally diverse trisubstituted alkenes and dihydropyridines. A kinetic study revealed an activation barrier of 10.1 kcal mol^-1 for the conversion of a key intermediate of the reaction.

Factors influencing the regioselectivity of the oxidation of asymmetric secondary amines with singlet oxygen

Aerobic amine oxidation is an attractive and elegant process for the α functionalization of amines. However, there are still several mechanistic uncertainties, particularly the factors governing the regioselectivity of the oxidation of asymmetric secondary amines and the oxidation rates of mixed primary amines. Herein, it is reported that singlet-oxygen-mediated oxidation of 1° and 2° amines is sensitive to the strength of the α-C-H bond and steric factors. Estimation of the relative bond dissociation energy by natural bond order analysis or by means of one-bond C-H coupling constants allowed the regioselectivity of secondary amine oxidations to be explained and predicted. In addition, the findings were utilized to synthesize highly regioselective substrates and perform selective amine cross-couplings to produce imines.

Preparation and characterization of Ni/mZSM-5 zeolite with a hierarchical pore structure by using KIT-6 as silica template: an efficient bi-functional catalyst for the reduction of nitro aromatic compounds
