Ligand effect of cyclometallated iridium(iii) complexes on N-alkylation of amines in hydrogen borrowing reactions

Dinuclear iridium complexes with the general formula (C^N)2Ir(μ-Cl)2Ir(C^N)2 (C^N = bidentate ligand with carbon and nitrogen donor atoms) were prepared and used in catalytic systems for N-alkylation of amines through the hydrogen borrowing pathway. Triphenylphosphine derivatives were used as auxiliary in catalytic systems to provide excellent conversion of amines to N-alkylation products in yields ranging from 57% to 100%. The catalytic ability of the catalyst depends on the structure of its coordination ligands, including bidentate ligands (C^N) and triphenylphosphine derivatives. These catalytic systems adopt an environmentally friendly and sustainable reaction process through a hydrogen self-transfer strategy, using readily available alcohols as alkylating agents without the need for bases, solvents, and other additives, showing potential in the synthetic and pharmaceutical industries.

N, S Co-Coordinated Zinc Single-Atom Catalysts for N-Alkylation of Aromatic Amines with Alcohols: The Role of S-Doping in the Reaction

S-doping emerged as a promising approach to further improve the catalytic performance of carbon-based materials for organic synthesis. Herein, a facile and gram-scale strategy was developed using zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) as a precursor for the fabrication of the ZIF-derived N, S co-doped carbon-supported zinc single-atom catalyst (CNS@Zn₁-AA) via the pyrolysis of S-doped ZIF-8, which was modified by aniline, ammonia and thiourea and prepared by one-pot ball milling at room temperature. This catalyst, in which Zn is dispersed as the single atom, displays superior activity in N-alkylation via the hydrogen-borrowing strategy (120 °C, turnover frequency (TOF) up to 8.4 h^-1). S-doping significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CNS@Zn₁-AA, as it increased the specific surface area and defects of this material and simultaneously increased the electron density of Zn sites in this catalyst. Furthermore, this catalyst had excellent stability and recyclability, and no obvious loss in activity after eight runs.

Dynamic Processes of Rhenium Polyhydride Complexes

Studies have demonstrated that high-coordination-number rhenium polyhydride complexes are precursors to catalysts that transform a variety of organic molecules. While rhenium polyhydride complexes lead to active catalysts, little has been reported on the mechanisms for the transformations. High-coordination-number rhenium polyhydride complexes exhibit several dynamic processes that make characterizations of the chemical properties for individual atoms difficult, at best, for room-temperature solutions. This review describes what is known of the dynamic processes that occur at high-coordination-number rhenium polyhydride complexes and how that knowledge may lead to the design of catalytic precursors in which the chemical properties of individual atoms can be more readily identified in room-temperature solutions.

Rhenium(I)-Catalyzed C-Methylation of Ketones, Indoles, and Arylacetonitriles Using Methanol

A ReCl(CO)₅/MeC(CH₂PPh₂)₃ (L2) system was developed for the C-methylation reactions utilizing methanol and base, following the borrowing hydrogen strategy. Diverse ketones, indoles, and arylacetonitriles underwent mono- and dimethylation selectively up to 99% yield. Remarkably, tandem multiple methylations were also achieved by employing this catalytic system.

Borrowing Hydrogen for Organic Synthesis

Borrowing hydrogen is a process that is used to diversify the synthetic utility of commodity alcohols. A catalyst first oxidizes an alcohol by removing hydrogen to form a reactive carbonyl compound. This intermediate can undergo a diverse range of subsequent transformations before the catalyst returns the "borrowed" hydrogen to liberate the product and regenerate the catalyst. In this way, alcohols may be used as alkylating agents whereby the sole byproduct of this one-pot reaction is water. In recent decades, significant advances have been made in this area, demonstrating many effective methods to access valuable products. This outlook highlights the diversity of metal and biocatalysts that are available for this approach, as well as the various transformations that can be performed, focusing on a selection of the most significant and recent advances. By succinctly describing and conveying the versatility of borrowing hydrogen chemistry, we anticipate its uptake will increase across a wider scientific audience, expanding opportunities for further development.

Synthesis of Quinolines Through Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling Catalyzed by Rhenium PN(H)P Complexes

A practical and sustainable synthesis of substituted quinolines was achieved through the annulation of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with various secondary alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, or nitriles, under hydrogen-borrowing conditions. Under the catalysis of well-defined rhenium complexes bearing tridentate diphosphinoamino ligands, the reaction proceeded efficiently (31 examples were isolated with yields up to 96 %) affording a variety of quinoline derivatives.

Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Aldehydes under Mild, Base-Free Conditions: Manganese Outperforms Rhenium

Several hydride Mn(I) and Re(I) PNP pincer complexes were applied as catalysts for the homogeneous chemoselective hydrogenation of aldehydes. Among these, [Mn(PNP-iPr)(CO)₂(H)] was found to be one of the most efficient base metal catalysts for this process and represents a rare example which permits the selective hydrogenation of aldehydes in the presence of ketones and other reducible functionalities, such as C=C double bonds, esters, or nitriles. The reaction proceeds at room temperature under base-free conditions with catalyst loadings between 0.1 and 0.05 mol% and a hydrogen pressure of 50 bar (reaching TONs of up to 2000). A mechanism which involves an outer-sphere hydride transfer and reversible PNP ligand deprotonation/protonation is proposed. Analogous isoelectronic and isostructural Re(I) complexes were only poorly active.

Effect of Re promoter on the structure and catalytic performance of Ni–Re/Al2O3 catalysts for the reductive amination of monoethanolamine

In this paper, Ni/Al₂O₃ catalysts (15 wt% Ni) with different Re loadings were prepared to investigate the effect of Re on the structure and catalytic performance of Ni–Re/Al₂O₃ catalysts for the reductive amination of monoethanolamine. Reaction results reveal that the conversion and ethylenediamine selectivity increase significantly with increasing Re loading up to 2 wt%. Ni–Re/Al₂O₃ catalysts show excellent stability during the reductive amination reaction. The characterization of XRD, DR UV-Vis spectroscopy, H₂-TPR, and acidity–basicity measurements indicates that addition of Re improves the Ni dispersion, proportion of octahedral Ni²⁺ species, reducibility, and acid strength for Ni–Re/Al₂O₃ catalysts. The Ni15 and Ni15–Re2 catalysts were chosen for in-depth study. The results from SEM-BSE, TEM, and CO-TPD indicate that smaller Ni⁰ particle size and higher Ni⁰ surface area are obtained in the reduced Ni–Re/Al₂O₃ catalysts. Results from in situ XPS and STEM-EDX line scan suggest that Re species show a mixture of various valances and have a tendency to aggregate on the surface of Ni⁰ particles. During reaction, the Ni⁰ particles on the Al₂O₃ support are stabilized and the sintering process is effectively suppressed by the incorporation of Re. It could be concluded that sufficient Ni⁰ sites, the collaborative effect of Ni–Re, and brilliant stability contribute to the excellent catalytic performance of Ni–Re/Al₂O₃ catalysts for the reductive amination of monoethanolamine.
