Abstract
An efficient method for pharmaceutically useful selenoflavones via a ruthenium-catalyzed selenylation reaction is demonstrated. The ruthenium-catalyzed selenylation was applied to synthesize diverse alkenyl selenides from simple unsaturated acids/amides and diaryl diselenides. A wide range of differently substituted diaryl diselenides can be applied in this protocol with a good functional group with excellent stereo- and regioselectivity.

Abstract
The efficient regio- and stereoselective syntheses of (Z,Z)-bis(3-amino-3-oxo-1-propenyl) selenides and diselenides in high yields based on the nucleophilic addition of sodium selenide to 2-propynamides and sodium diselenide to 3-(trimethylsilyl)-2-propynamides have been developed. The first examples of the addition of a selenium-centered nucleophile to 2-propynamides with a terminal triple bond and diselenide anion to 3-(trimethylsilyl)-2-propynamides have been carried out. Bis(3-amino-3-oxo-1-propenyl) diselenides are a novel family of compounds, none of which has yet been described in the literature. The glutathione peroxidase-like activity of the obtained compounds has been evaluated and products with high activity have been found. It was established that diselenides are superior to selenides with the same substituents in glutathione peroxidase-like activity. The results of the structural studying of products by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and 77Se-NMR data are discussed.

Abstract
The nature of solvent is a key factor for stereoselective mono- and bis-thiolation of (E)-β-iodovinyl sulfones with thiols under basic conditions. A novel and unprecedented vicinal bisthiolation of (E)-β-iodovinyl sulfones with thiols under the influence of K2CO3/DMSO at room temperature for quick assembly of (E)-1,2-dithio-1-alkenes is presented. Solvent-induced stereoselective monosulfenylation of (E)-β-iodovinyl sulfones with thiols has also been established for the synthesis of both (E)- and (Z)-1,2-thiosulfonylethenes in MeCN and MeOH, respectively. Moreover, K2CO3-mediated desulfonylative-sulfenylation of (Z)-1,2-thiosulfonylethenes with thiols in DMSO furnished unsymmetrical (Z)-1,2-dithio-1-alkenes for the first time. The solvent-dependent versatile reactivity of (E)-β-iodovinyl sulfones has been successfully explored to provide a set of (E)-/(Z)-1,2-dithio-1-alkenes and (E)-/(Z)-1,2-thiosulfonyl-1-alkenes in good to high yields with excellent stereoselectivities. Notably, this operationally simple process utilizes a broad substrate scope with good functional group tolerance and compatibility. The efficacy of the process has been proven for gram-scale reactions, and plausible mechanistic models are outlined on the basis of experimental results and control experiments.

Abstract
The efficient regio- and stereoselective synthesis of (Z,Z)-3,3′-selanediylbis(2-propenamides) in 76–93% yields was developed based on the reaction of sodium selenide with 3-trimethylsilyl-2-propynamides. (Z,Z)-3,3′-Selanediylbis(2-propenamides) are a novel class of organoselenium compounds. To date, not a single representative of 3,3′-selanediylbis(2-propenamides) has been described in the literature. Studying glutathione peroxidase-like properties by a model reaction showed that the activity of the obtained products significantly varies depending on the organic moieties in the amide group. Divinyl selenide, which contains two lipophilic cyclohexyl substituents in the amide group, exhibits very high glutathione peroxidase-like activity and this compound is considerably superior to other products in this respect.

Abstract
An oxidative trifunctionalization of aryl alkynoates has been devised via the chalcogenide radical triggered intramolecular 1,4-aryl migration/decarboxylation cascade to prepare 1,1-dichalcogenide tetrasubstituted alkenes in high yields (up to 98 %). This operationally simple reaction proceeds under metal-free conditions, can be executed on gram scale, and highlights formal 1,1-difunctionalization of alkynes. Synthetic potential of this protocol was demonstrated through a twofold cascade rearrangement to access highly conjugated tetra-selenylated alkenes along with a cross-dehydrogenative annulation to prepare fluorene derivative.

Abstract
In this overview, we present our analysis of the future of organic synthesis in Brazil, a highly innovative and strategic area of research which underpins our social and economical progress. Several different topics (automation, catalysis, green chemistry, scalability, methodological studies and total syntheses) were considered to hold promise for the future advance of chemical sciences in Brazil. In order to put it in perspective, contributions from Brazilian laboratories were selected by the citations received and importance for the field and were benchmarked against some of the most important results disclosed by authors worldwide. The picture that emerged reveals a thriving area of research, with new generations of well-trained and productive chemists engaged particularly in the areas of green chemistry and catalysis. In order to fulfill the promise of delivering more efficient and sustainable processes, an integration of the academic and industrial research agendas is to be expected. On the other hand, academic research in automation of chemical processes, a well established topic of investigation in industrial settings, has just recently began in Brazil and more academic laboratories are lining up to contribute. All these areas of research are expected to enable the future development of the almost unchartered field of scalability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain is one of the most prevalent, costly and disabling conditions that reduces quality of life. Although there are many analgesics available, there is some concern regarding their efficacy, safety and side effects. Organic selenium compounds are attractive targets of various research groups due to their pharmacological properties. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of 1,2-bis-(4-methoxyphenylselanyl) styrene (BMOSE) in mice, as well as to investigate the mechanism involved in the antinociceptive effect. METHODS The animals were submitted to the formalin and glutamate tests. The assessment of the possible involvement of the serotonergic system in BMOSE antinociceptive activity was performed using the glutamate test. Also, we investigated the possible toxicity of the compound. KEY FINDINGS 1,2-bis-(4-methoxyphenylselanyl) styrene (0.1-50 mg/kg, i.g.) was efficient in avoiding nociception induced by glutamate and formalin and also reduced paw oedema. The possible involvement of 5-HT3 serotoninergic receptor antagonist ondansetron blocked the antinociceptive effect of BMOSE. The acute toxicity assays did not show any toxicity related to the administration of BMOSE (200 mg/kg). CONCLUSIONS It is possible to conclude that BMOSE has both antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity, and the serotoninergic system, more specifically, the 5-HT3 receptor, is involved in the effect.

Abstract
This review covers recent achievements in metal-catalyzed Z-H and Z-Z (Z=S, Se) bond addition to the triple bonds of alkynes-a convenient and atom-efficient way to carbon-element bond formation. Various catalytic systems (both homogeneous and heterogeneous) developed to date to obtain mono- and bis-chalcogen-substituted alkenes or dienes, as well as carbonyl compounds or heterocycles, starting from simple and available alkynes and chalcogenols or dichalcogenides are described. The right choice of metal and ligands allows us to perform these transformations with high selectivities under mild reaction conditions, thus tolerating unprotected functional groups in substrates and broadening ways of further modification of the products. The main aim of the review is to show the potential of the catalytic methods developed in synthetic organic chemistry. Thus, emphasis is made on the scope of reactions, types of products that can be selectively formed, convenience, and scalability of the catalytic procedures. A brief mechanistic description is also given to introduce new readers to the topic.

Abstract
An alternative green method was described for the synthesis of selanylesters by reactions of acyl chlorides with arylselenols, generated in situ by reaction of diaryl diselenides with hypophosphorous acid (H3PO2) using polyethylene glycol-400 (PEG-400) as the solvent.
