Gold–copper alloyed nanorods for metal-catalyzed organic reactions: implication of surface ligands on nanoparticle-based heterogeneous catalysis

Stability of Polyethylene Glycol-Coated Copper Nanoparticles and Their Optical Properties

Oxidation is a corrosion reaction where the corroded metal forms an oxide. Prevention of oxidation at the nanoscale is critically important to retain the physicochemical properties of metal nanoparticles. In this work, we studied the stability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated copper nanoparticles (PEGylated CuNPs) against oxidation. The freshly-prepared PEGylated CuNPs mainly consist of metallic Cu which are quite stable in air although their surfaces are typically covered with a few monolayers of cuprous oxide. However, they are quickly oxidized in water due to the presence of protons that facilitate oxidation of the cuprous oxide to cupric oxide. PEG with carboxylic acid terminus could slightly delay the oxidation process compared to that with thiol terminus. It was found that a solvent with reducing power such as ethanol could greatly enhance the stability of PEGylated CuNPs by preventing further oxidation of the cuprous oxide to cupric oxide and thus retain the optical properties of CuNPs. The reducing environment also assists the galvanic replacement of these PEGylated CuNPs to form hollow nanoshells; however, they consist of ultra-small particle assemblies due to the co-reduction of gold precursor during the replacement reaction. As a result, these nanoshells do not exhibit strong optical properties in the near-infrared region. This study highlights the importance of solvent effects on PEGylated nonprecious metal nanoparticles against oxidation corrosion and its applications in preserving physicochemical properties of metallic nanostructures.

Reversible switching of arylazopyrazole within a metal-organic cage

Arylazopyrazoles represent a new family of molecular photoswitches characterized by a near-quantitative conversion between two states and long thermal half-lives of the metastable state. Here, we investigated the behavior of a model arylazopyrazole in the presence of a self-assembled cage based on Pd–imidazole coordination. Owing to its high water solubility, the cage can solubilize the E isomer of arylazopyrazole, which, by itself, is not soluble in water. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography have independently demonstrated that each cage can encapsulate two molecules of E-arylazopyrazole. UV-induced switching to the Z isomer was accompanied by the release of one of the two guests from the cage and the formation of a 1:1 cage/Z-arylazopyrazole inclusion complex. DFT calculations suggest that this process involves a dramatic change in the conformation of the cage. Back-isomerization was induced with green light and resulted in the initial 1:2 cage/E-arylazopyrazole complex. This back-isomerization reaction also proceeded in the dark, with a rate significantly higher than in the absence of the cage.

Au–Cu–M (M = Pt, Pd, Ag) nanorods with enhanced catalytic efficiency by galvanic replacement reaction

This work reports a general wet-chemistry method to produce Au–Cu–X (X = Pt, Pd, and Ag) trimetallic nanorods using galvanic replacement reaction with Au–Cu nanorods as the templates.

When lithography meets self-assembly: a review of recent advances in the directed assembly of complex metal nanostructures on planar and textured surfaces

One of the foremost challenges in nanofabrication is the establishment of a processing science that integrates wafer-based materials, techniques, and devices with the extraordinary physicochemical properties accessible when materials are reduced to nanoscale dimensions. Such a merger would allow for exacting controls on nanostructure positioning, promote cooperative phenomenon between adjacent nanostructures and/or substrate materials, and allow for electrical contact to individual or groups of nanostructures. With neither self-assembly nor top-down lithographic processes being able to adequately meet this challenge, advancements have often relied on a hybrid strategy that utilizes lithographically-defined features to direct the assembly of nanostructures into organized patterns. While these so-called directed assembly techniques have proven viable, much of this effort has focused on the assembly of periodic arrays of spherical or near-spherical nanostructures comprised of a single element. Work directed toward the fabrication of more complex nanostructures, while still at a nascent stage, has nevertheless demonstrated the possibility of forming arrays of nanocubes, nanorods, nanoprisms, nanoshells, nanocages, nanoframes, core-shell structures, Janus structures, and various alloys on the substrate surface. In this topical review, we describe the progress made in the directed assembly of periodic arrays of these complex metal nanostructures on planar and textured substrates. The review is divided into three broad strategies reliant on: (i) the deterministic positioning of colloidal structures, (ii) the reorganization of deposited metal films at elevated temperatures, and (iii) liquid-phase chemistry practiced directly on the substrate surface. These strategies collectively utilize a broad range of techniques including capillary assembly, microcontact printing, chemical surface modulation, templated dewetting, nanoimprint lithography, and dip-pen nanolithography and employ a wide scope of chemical processes including redox reactions, alloying, dealloying, phase separation, galvanic replacement, preferential etching, template-mediated reactions, and facet-selective capping agents. Taken together, they highlight the diverse toolset available when fabricating organized surfaces of substrate-supported nanostructures.

Alloying CuNPs with AuNPs or AgNPs followed by exposure to air only leads to Cu(0) oxidation to Cu(i) in AgCu alloyed NPs, whereas Cu(0) is not oxidized in AuCu alloyed NPs in which Au(i) forms.

Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol: A Quantitative Assessment of the Role of Dissolved Oxygen in Determining the Induction Time

The reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol by borohydride is one of the foremost model catalytic reactions because it allows for a straightforward assessment of catalysts using the kinetic parameters extracted from the real-time spectroscopic monitoring of an aqueous solution. Crucial to its standing as a model reaction is a comprehensive mechanistic framework able to explain the entire time evolution of the reaction. While much of this framework is in place, there is still much debate over the cause of the induction period, an initial time interval where no reaction seemingly occurs. Here, we report on the simultaneous monitoring of the spectroscopic signal and the dissolved oxygen content within the aqueous solution. It reveals that the induction period is the time interval required for the level of dissolved oxygen to fall below a critical value that is dependent upon whether Au, Ag, or Pd nanoparticles are used as the catalyst. With this understanding, we are able to exert complete control over the induction period, being able to eliminate it, extend it indefinitely, or even induce multiple induction periods over the course of a single reaction. Moreover, we have determined that the reaction product, 4-aminophenol, in the presence of the same catalyst reacts with dissolved oxygen to form 4-nitrophenolate. The implication of these results is that the induction period relates, not to some activation of the catalyst, but to a time interval where the reaction product is being rapidly transformed back into a reactant by a side reaction.

Colloidal metal oxide nanocrystal catalysis by sustained chemically driven ligand displacement

Surface chemistry is a key enabler for colloidal nanocrystal applications. In this respect, metal oxide nanocrystals (NCs) stand out from other NCs as carboxylic acid ligands adsorb on their surface by dissociation to carboxylates and protons, the latter proving essential in electron transfer reactions. Here, we show that this binding motif sets the stage for chemically driven ligand displacement where the binding of amines or alcohols to HfO2 NCs is promoted by the conversion of a bound carboxylic acid into a non-coordinating amide or ester. Furthermore, the sustained ligand displacement, following the addition of excess carboxylic acid, provides a catalytic pathway for ester formation, whereas the addition of esters leads to NC-catalysed transesterification. Because sustained, chemically driven ligand displacement leaves the NCs-including their surface composition-unchanged and preserves colloidal stability, metal oxide nanocrystals are thus turned into effective nanocatalysts that bypass the tradeoff between colloidal stability and catalytic activity.

An unconventional mechanism of hollow nanorod formation: asymmetric Cu diffusion in Au-Cu alloy nanorods during galvanic replacement reaction

This study investigates how AuCu3 alloy nanorods transform into hollow rods during a galvanic replacement reaction. An unusual reaction intermediate was observed where the solid nanorod became partially hollow and Cu rich at one end. This was attributed to simultaneous galvanic replacement and asymmetric diffusion of Cu due to the Kirkendall effect. The hollow Au-Cu nanorods showed enhanced catalytic activity for p-nitrophenol reduction.

Plastically deformed Cu-based alloys as high-performance catalysts for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Plastically deformed mesoscopic structures exposed to an etching procedure are demonstrated as highly catalytic in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.
