Abstract
Using phenyliodine diacetate as an oxidant and nickel acetate as a promoter, a wide range of unsymmetric thiosulfonates could be furnished easily in moderate to excellent yields starting from N-substituted O-thiocarbamates and sodium sulfinates. This protocol features mild conditions, short reaction times, and high atomic utilization, which can provide an alternative method for the synthesis of unsymmetric thiosulfonates. In addition, the reaction could be scaled up on a gram scale, showing potential application value in industry.

Abstract
AbstractA new synthetic methodology has been developed for the synthesis of sulfinate alkyl and aryl esters. The methodology involves the combination of p-toluenesulfinic acid and 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) to create the putative reagent sulfinylimidazole. The process spontaneously releases carbon dioxide upon the addition of the CDI to the acid suggesting the rapid formation of the proposed reagent. Reaction of this reagent with a series of alcohols (primary, secondary, and tertiary) afforded the corresponding sulfinate alkyl esters in good to excellent yields by the addition of alcohols. It was also possible to form the related sulfinate aryl esters by treating the proposed sulfinylimidazole with selected phenols (phenol, p-tert-butylphenol, and thymol). The aryl esters were formed in excellent conversion based on analysis of the 500 MHz 1H NMR spectra of the crude reaction mixtures.

Abstract
Without any metal catalyst, an efficient transformation of a variety of sulfonyl hydrazides into the corresponding thiosulfonates mediated by NBS/DABCO under air is developed. The method utilizes mild reaction conditions, affords moderate to good yields of product, and tolerates a broad substrate scope. A plausible mechanism is proposed for the decomposition of the sulfonyl hydrazides and the construction of S(O2)–S bonds to form thiosulfonates.

Abstract
Sulfones are important building blocks in the construction of biologically active molecules or functional materials. The sulfonyl functional group in sulfones is so versatile that it can act as either a nucleophile, an electrophile, or a radical in different organic reactions. Recently, quinazoline sulfones have been used to build asymmetrical ether derivatives as inhibitors of signaling pathways governed by tyrosine kinases and the epidermal growth factor-receptor. In this paper, we report a facile synthesis of a novel quinazoline sulfone, 6-nitro-7-tosylquinazolin-4(3H)-one (III), using the modified protocol from 7-chloro-6-nitroquinazolin-4(3H)-one (I) and sodium p-toluenesulfinate (II). The structure of the title compound III was determined using mass-spectrometry, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, HSQC (Heteronuclear single quantum coherence), HMBC (Heteronuclear Multiple Bond Correlation Spectroscopy) spectroscopies, and PXRD analysis.

Abstract
A tetrabutylammonium iodide-mediated direct sulfenylation of arenes with ethyl arylsulfinates in water was developed. Various electron-rich arenes and ethyl arylsulfinates were investigated in the reaction, and a series of aryl sulfides were obtained in excellent yields. The advantages of this green protocol were simple reaction conditions (metal-free, water as the solvent, and under air), odorless and easily available sulfur reagent, broad substrate scope, and gram-scale synthesis. Moreover, the potential application of aryl sulfides was exemplified by further transformations.

Abstract
The reaction of t-butylmagnesium chlorides with diastereomerically pure (R)-1,2-O-isopropylidene-3,5-O-sulfinyl-α-d-glucofuranose (R)-4 was found to be stopped at the stage of the corresponding, diastereoisomerically pure 1,2-O-isopropylidene-(5-O-α-d-glucofuranosyl) t-butanesulfinate (S)-10 for which the crystal structure and the (S)-absolute configuration was determined by X-ray crystallography. Comparison of the absolute configurations of the starting sulfite (R)-4, and t-butanesulfinate (S)-10 (which crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group P212121, with the single compound molecule present in the asymmetric unit), clearly indicates that the reaction of nucleophilic substitution at the stereogenic sulfur atom in the sulfite (R)-4 occurs with the full inversion of configuration via the trigonal bipyramidal sulfurane intermediate 4c in which both the entering and leaving groups are located in apical positions.

Abstract
N-Sulfonylhydrazones derived from alkyl, aryl, and heteroaryl aldehydes and ketones undergo rapid conversion into the corresponding sulfinates when heated with 10 mol % K2CO3 in N,N'-dimethylethylene urea (DMEU) at elevated temperature. The reaction conditions are amenable to several functional groups and suitable for gram-scale synthesis. Under these base-catalyzed conditions, N-tosylhydrazones derived from O-allylated and O-propargylated 2-hydroxyarylaldehydes do not undergo the well-established intramolecular [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions and generate corresponding sulfinates in good yields. The base-catalyzed transformation proceeds via crucial rapid intermolecular protonation of the diazo intermediate 11 to generate diazonium ion 12, which upon nucleophilic displacement by the sulfonyl ion 10 provides the desired sulfinate selectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sulfinic esters are important and useful building blocks in organic synthesis. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to develop a simple and efficient method for the synthesis of sulfinic esters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Constant current electrolysis from thiols and alcohols was selected as the method for the synthesis of sulfinic esters. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A novel electrochemical method for the synthesis of sulfinic esters from thiophenols and alcohols has been developed. Up to 27 examples of sulfinic esters have been synthesized using the current methods. This protocol shows good functional group tolerance as well as high efficiency. In addition, this protocol can be easily scaled up with good efficiency. Notably, heterocycle-containing substrates, including pyridine, thiophene, and benzothiazole, gave the desired products in good yields. A plausible reaction mechanism is proposed. CONCLUSION This research not only provides a green and efficient method for the synthesis of sulfinic esters but also shows new applications of electrochemistry in organic synthesis. It is considered that this green and efficient synthetic protocol used to prepare sulfinic esters will have good applications in the future.

Abstract
The use of sulfinic acids and their salts continues to be extensively developed in organic chemistry. This is attributable to their dual capacity for acting as nucleophilic or electrophilic reagents, as well as their ease of preparation and stability on storage. This report highlights the research accomplished since 2015 on this topic, updating a previous review published by our team in 2014.

Abstract
In this overview, we present our analysis of the future of organic synthesis in Brazil, a highly innovative and strategic area of research which underpins our social and economical progress. Several different topics (automation, catalysis, green chemistry, scalability, methodological studies and total syntheses) were considered to hold promise for the future advance of chemical sciences in Brazil. In order to put it in perspective, contributions from Brazilian laboratories were selected by the citations received and importance for the field and were benchmarked against some of the most important results disclosed by authors worldwide. The picture that emerged reveals a thriving area of research, with new generations of well-trained and productive chemists engaged particularly in the areas of green chemistry and catalysis. In order to fulfill the promise of delivering more efficient and sustainable processes, an integration of the academic and industrial research agendas is to be expected. On the other hand, academic research in automation of chemical processes, a well established topic of investigation in industrial settings, has just recently began in Brazil and more academic laboratories are lining up to contribute. All these areas of research are expected to enable the future development of the almost unchartered field of scalability.
