Abstract
The tropical Garcinia genus of flowering plants is a prolific producer of aromatic natural products including polyphenols, flavonoids, and xanthones. In this study, we report the first phytochemical investigation of Garcinia caudiculata Ridl. from the island of Borneo. Fractionation, purification, and structure elucidation by MS and NMR resulted in the discovery of two meroterpenoids. One was a benzofuranone lactone previously isolated from Iryanthera grandis and Rhus chinensis, and the second was a new hydroquinone methyl ester that we named caudiquinol. Both natural products are rare examples of plant meroterpenoids with an intact geranylgeranyl chain.

Abstract
A general method for the demethylation, debenzylation, and deallylation of aryl ethers using HPPh2 and tBuOK is reported. The reaction features mild and metal-free reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, good functional group compatibility, and high chemical selectivity towards aryl ethers over aliphatic structures. Notably, this approach is competent to selectively deprotect the allyl or benzyl group, making it a general and practical method in organic synthesis.

Abstract
Aryl benzofuranones are privileged structural units present in natural products and pharmaceutically relevant compounds with high bioactivity and therapeutic value; synthetic access to these scaffolds remains an area of intensive interest. A new and efficient TfOH-catalyzed cascade ortho C-H activation/lactonization of phenols with α-aryl-α-diazoacetates is reported. This metal-free protocol provides an operationally simple and rapid method for the one-pot assembly of diverse α-aryl benzofuranones in high yields with broad substrate scope, a readily starting material, good chemo-regioselectivity, and excellent functional group compatibility.
